Not the point. He needs to take responsibility for his role in this. The buck stops at his desk. He has taken the coward's way out by firing people under him. Resignation required.
:? :? :? :? :?

What? a) I agree he needs to take responsibility. b) I agree he should resign. But, firing people under you is "the coward's way out"? Dude, I fired three people this WEEK. Does that mean I should resign?
Of course not. Unless your circumstances are the same as with Engstrom. Are they? If he resigns, I will change my opinion. As of now, my opinion of him has not changed.

The land of free speech is on inspired display today. When was our Bill of Rights amended to say "free speech for the ignorant. Why is a football player different than a regular student. I keep hearing of all of these crimes that have occurred but how many were prosecuted other than in the media. Many say they are held to a higher standing because they are in the spotlight. This spotlight was not created by these athletes but by the media and many of the people that write in these blogs. Let's not forget that the accused is just that accused until proven guilty. This is a sad day when rags like the Missoulian dictate public opinion and persecute teen age men for a few more papers sold. Plu was fired for standing up for one of his players just like a parent would for one of his kids. I miss the days when you could go have a beer and not worry about your name showing up in the local rag or blog discussing your drinking problem. If a student is convicted, kick them out of school. If an athlete is convicted kick them off the team. But let them be convicted by the law not by the media. Plu is a good coach that stood up for one of his non-convicted kids. It is a sad day for Griz nation.

This is total bullshit.

Fucking witch hunt.

This shit will not stop because all of you havent taught your own kids right from wrong. Idiots.

Hey, I'm not PROUD of that fact... ;)

..and what of Dennison, a lot of crap was under his reign, does he still get a building named after him and collect his UM dough?

Why are you guys not wanting to get rid of Foley...............that a dude that needs to GTFO of UM. If you are going to clean house take it all the way and take Maes with you as well.

This entrenched BS needs to be gutted................

100%, and I like Foley. I would have preferred if nobody was fired and the university stuck together against the actions of idiots. That is not the case though. If you are going to clean house you have to do everyone. From Royce on down. Only way to start over.

amen, the sacred cows are many....people with spine and scrupples are few. Foley is a member of the untouchable class...a whole lot of em grazing on the oval.

Think people need to calm down and let all the facts come out before they call for more firings. I've known Jim O'Day since I was a little kid. He's a great guy and a very caring person. Pflugrad also seemed to be a guy who really cared about his players. Good people get fired everyday and a lot of times its from things that they can't control but that they are ultimatly responsible for. When you are in a leadership position that is just part of the job. I haven't seen anything that Engstrom has done wrong yet and I'm curiously awaiting on more information of why termination was deemed the appropriate decision for Jim and Robin. Bottom line though is that Jim is the point of leadership of the AD and Robin is the point of leadership of the football program and there are issues that are damaging enough to warrant drastic measures. Anyways, despite all of this I hope that all decisions that are being made are being done in the best interest of the University and the football program. I believe that they probably are.

I'm saying it's Royce's version of the 5th...unlike the 5th of Evan Williams I'm presently working on.

Wow...UM made the top news of the hour in Los Angeles! I assume the President of the U will resign in favor of one of those passed over for his job...oh, I forgot, there were no others...This is bad news for Griz sports fans no matter how it is spun.

Its just sad that these two men were sacrificed in order to substantiate the thought of progress toward that healing! Both of these gentlemen are victims of circumstance in my eyes and I hope that they & Griz Football, rebounds quickly & successfully from this.

Oh, BS. They're not 7th graders. They put on their big boy pants just like you and me. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS IN COLLEGE ATHLETICS when teams go awry. Elements of this team were out of f***[*] control and it was plainly obvious Pflugrad wasn't able/willing to deal with it. If I were president of UM, the last straw for me would have been his comments regarding Johnson when he was cleared to practice. At the very LEAST, know enough to just keep your mouth shut...but to go so over the top with effusive praise for a guy who's under a cloud of suspicion for RAPE...well that was just pure stupidity. Couple that with all the other off-field issues over the past 10-12 months and you've got a recipe for disaster.

My only surprise is what took Engstrom so long. Personally I think he's shown very little backbone throughout this. I'd have put a bullet in Pflu at the end of the season. There was certainly enough of a case to be made for that. Hell, had O'Day been willing to do THAT, he might still be employed.

I agree totally. It is simply amazing to me that supposed Griz fans are talking about bailing on the team because these two people were fired! What a bunch of whiny losers!

The axe fell, my friends, and it was over-due! This criminal culture has been created by Bobby Hauck in his efforts to win-at-all-costs, so that he could realize his dream to coach the big boys. It has continued under O'Day and Phlu, and perhaps has even escalated. O'Day should have fired Hauck after several of the criminal acts were committed, then swept under the rug by Hauck. We all remember the little Kaimen travesty! But, O'Day didn't have the gonads to fire a winning coach. So, the culture of corruption continued to simmer.

I knew that it was a house-of-cards that would eventually collapse.

I applaud the Griz fans who understand that the program will continue to excel, and who support Engstrom and his correct decision to excise the cancer before it grows any further. I will continue to be an avid Griz supporter, and I hope the mob hysteria being exhibited on this board by "fans" who would rather turn their heads to the continued problems surrounding this program because of winning-at-all-costs, will do some serious sole-searching and realize that this was the best thing that could have happened to this program!

O'day and Pflu are neither victims nor fall guys. They made the mistake, as other coaches have ie Jim Tressel, of not acting like leaders in the face of adversity. The win at all cost, hiding the ball, coverups, and manipulation is what cost them their jobs. Here are some indisputable examples:

1. Tazer Indicedent: They did literally nothing in the form of any kind of discipline. Despite the tazing, the players behavior was inappropriate at best in relation to the officers coming to the house. It could be argued that the best thing that happened in the case was that the players were tazed. It allowed them to cry foul on the officers, to shift the focus off their stupid behavior. Regardless, the coach and AD did nothing but a quarter suspension in a meaningless game. Guilty or not guilty of a crime, they sent no message to the players or the community about how they would deal with a problem player, i.e., we don't care if it is criminal behavior or not, it is unacceptable behavior. To further compound the problem, O'Day, Plugrad and VP Jim Foley marched the players down to a known booster lawyer with connections in the criminal justice system, with the hopes that the case could be quietly taken care of for free. Unfortuneately for them, it wasn't quietly taken care of, then the publicity and media coverage swarmed. The lawyer booster Datsopoulous then publicly (and stupidly) proclaims he is taking the case for free. Blatant NCAA violations. The Darla Keck idiot show of attacking the cops was on. All stupid publicity moves. Attack local cops vs. short term players, nice decision. Yet what the did Pflugrad and O'Day do....nothing. They should have suspended the players and let the system run its course and then deal with the players as they saw appropriate. But either way, firmly discipline the players to send a message to the community and other players, that this type of crap won't be tollerated.

2. December 2010, rape allegations. Pflugrad and O'Day, both aware of a gang rape allegation by players against a University student, do nothing to discipline any of the alleged perpetrators.

3. December 2011, rape allegations. Pflugrad and O'Day, both aware of a gang rape allegation by players against 2 University student athletes, do nothing to discipline any of the alleged perpetrators. In fact, despite the information play the players in the National Semifinal game against Sam Houston State.

4. Jordan Johnson, rape allegation. Pflugrad and O'Day, put Johnson back on the field despite current investigation and complaint of rape allegation. Their reasoning, TRO turned into Civil Agreement, which still restricted Johnson from being within 1500 feet of alleged victim. Also, as soon as Johnson reinstated, Pflugrad publicly proclaimed Johnson's high character, leaderships skills and values, despite continuing allegations. Can you be any more stupid?

So cry for these 2 guys all you want, I for one will not. They were the best 2 people in a position of power to do something to send a message to the players and community what this program is about, and that the program and University was bigger than any of the players. Instead they acted like children and showed no leadership characteristics whatsoever. They forgot about who the real victims were or at least potentially were, for that they made their own bed.
Here is my problem with what your saying, most of which I agree with by the way. All of those incidents on your list with the exception of the last one happened before the Marz investigation was completed, before signing day, before new assistants were hired, and before spring ball started. If this would have happened right after an incident or right after the investigation was completed it could be justified using most of your examples and the damage would not be near as bad as it is going to be now. The firing today has to be because of something that happened very recently, and going by what WE actually know about the JJ situation, I don't see why a coach sticking up for a player who is only ACCUSED of a crime is a fireable offense after all of the other incidents weren't. Something doesn't smell right to me. I'm not crying about it, and don't necessaily disagree with the firing, but the timing of it is strange to me.

That's not what really what I was stabbing at. I think people need to calm down on their opinions on Engstrom until all the facts come out. Regardless though, I have full confidence that the decisions made are being made in the best interest of the University and not out of some conspiracy passing the blame onto somebody else. People need to calm down and realize that if we continued down the same path we were going down that we might get to a place where the damage would take years to recover from.
