No one knows where people are getting infected

When anyone can justify wearing masks now, to prevent Covid deaths, but not forever, to prevent flu deaths...I’m all ears. To date no one has done that. Spanky had a snarky remark asking if I was dumb, but still avoided the question.
Are you really still struggling with why there is a push to wear masks during a pandemic—the only pandemic in over 100 years—while we scramble to get a vaccine for a “novel” disease? Is it really that difficult to understand for you? And you wonder why Spank called you dumb? :msugrad:
When you hear the word “novel” do you think it means a long and boring fictitious prose and not worth your time? Did you know there is a second meaning?
Crap did I really just press “submit” in this thread? Fook.

It appears to be you that is struggling with what I am saying. Please show me where I EVER said I don't understand why people are wearing a mask during a pandemic. I don't know where you got that from?

In fact, I said the exact opposite! I COMPLETELY understand why people should wear masks during a pandemic. Because masks slow the spread of viruses. Apparently not ALL viruses, but certainly this one! These lives are definitely more important than other lives or we'd wear masks every day of our lives!

We all know these deaths are more important!! $3.3 million deaths in US in 2020, 10% of which are Covid deaths. Haven't heard or seen Nora ODonnell choke up or shed a tear for the other $2.9 million.......but she does for these poor Covid folks a couple times on every broadcast

No, you misunderstood his question. Simply put, he's asking why we don't always wear masks and save lives.

OFFS. GVHBs
I understood him just fine, thank you very much.
He questioned the “justif[ication]” of wearing a mask only during a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic (which is just dumb in the first place) instead of always/forever (which just obfuscates the first point). I called him out on how dumb that logic is because it completely ignores the novel nature of the disease, not to mention the lack of immunity, vaccine, etc.
“One more thing.” I swear Trump changed the meaning of “playing dumb.” Columbo was the best, and you realized at the end he was actually really smart. That’s not how it works these days. Instead, it’s more like arguing just to argue.
And I suspect that’s the case as ihatethefookingcats seems to be disingenuous, borderline gaslighting here. He claims he supports masks but implies the reasoning is flawed.
It’s like arguing, “why do I only change a tire when I get a flat?” Shouldn’t I change the tires all the time to prevent flats? I’m not changing the tires all the time, so what’s the point in changing this one?
I knew I would regret posting in this thread but god damn it if I didn’t do it again

Quality stuff. "Gaslighting"? That's great.

I never said I support wearing masks. I understand the science of masks. And I wear masks where I have to because I'm a good little boy! The reasoning is flawed if we're going to pretend we're just trying to save lives and "look out for our neighbor". I'm of the believe we should ALWAYS try and save lives and look out for our neighbor. But just as I and AZ pointed out earlier, this isn't the case. If we really wanted to pretend we care so much about others there are countless ways to show that, and not just during one year of a pandemic.

The tire change analogy is not your best work. Makes no sense at all, especially if we're pretending it's about saving lives. It's impossible to even relate too it makes such little sense. But I can assure you, changing tires when they are not flat, or appear to be nearing flat, is not the same as wondering why masks are so important preventing deaths from THIS virus, but no one seems to care about people dying from other viruses.

No one has been able to answer this question, and your crazy analogy just shows that no one has an answer. Aside from just coming out and saying it's not really about just saving lives, be cause we could always "just save lives" by doing hundreds of different things; including wearing masks.

Masks don't stop viruses, they are meant to kind of control the spread if someone sneezes or coughs. They are meant as population control like the lockdowns and curfews that make no sense because states without lockdowns have lower rates.

Sorry I tried to dumb it down for you but realized that’s an exercise in futility.

What reasoning? Why is it flawed? Who’s “pretending”? What are you talking about? Seriously. Need you to do a better job of spelling it out.

WTF are you talking about? Who’s pretending? Or are you a Covid deny-er?
Like the word “novel”, I don’t think you know what the word “gaslighting” means. [Shit, maybe you do and that’s the point—I’m a mark.]. ‘Cause it sounds like you’re really good at it on accident.

While I don't support the "taking over" of the capitol or any destruction or violence today (looks like there wasn't much) by Trump protestors, believe Trump has been wrong, stupid, and an idiot since the election (and before, to some extent), and believe some Repubs are going a bit too far, does it seem that CNN types are being a big overdramatic? Is this really their idea of a "coup", i.e. the protests and whatever some Repubs were planing to do with the electoral vote formalities today? If this is their idea of a coup, perhaps some lessons should be taken by people who have done coups in places in South America and elsewhere.

Also, compare the protests today in DC to Black Lives Matters things that occurred virtually every day/night in Portland, and elsewhere. And on Capitol Hill in Seattle. Those protests were much worse and more destructive and violent. Didn't notice CNN jumping all over them.

And, to me, what some Dems, DOJ and FBI did with the Russia investigation, where they truly tried to undermine and get rid of a presidential candidate and then president, is at least as bad, and probably worse, than what has been going on today and with Trump since he lost the election. As dumb as Trump has been in the past few months, at least he did it out in the open. The Dems who did the Russia stuff were very sneaky.

It looks like Trump's selfishness screwed the 2 Senate candidates in Georgia. I hope the US can get rid of Trump for good, or at least have him start winding down and fading away. As the Journal said today in an opinion piece, Trump screwed himself with no discipline, not listening to advice, and unforced errors. While I don't care for either party, he has put the Repub party in a bad and awkward place.

On masks, masks clearly do some good, maybe a lot of good. They impede aerosol, as well as coughs. It works both ways. At this point, it seems that another couple months of masks would be helpful or very helpful. To get us to the wide use of the vaccine. Also, masks make a lot of people more comfortable about going out to businesses, etc. It sure makes me feel better. I'm happy to trade mask-wearing for more business opening.

The auto driving speed analogy was a good one. Sure, masks could help with flu, but flu is not a pandemic. Masks likely do a lot more good now in the pandemic than they would during normal times with the flu. No reason to drive 25mph with the flu.

Ouch. “Isuckthecats”. That really hurts. It was as witty as the spare tire analogy earlier. Quality, thoughtful stuff.

Not a Covid “deny-er” at all. I had it. It sucked for me. 2 months later I still am not breathing well. So like you appear to be so confused above, I too have no idea what that means.

If you don’t know what question I posed about 5 times it’s really not worth the time. You’re obviously very confused by my questions and I feel bad for that.

I suck the cats! Man that is gold!!!!!

Nope. I just went back and reviewed the thread. You did not “pose” a question and certainly not 5 times. I specifically looked for question marks in your last several posts. You are the confused one. Please link the question you claim to have “posed” or apologize for lying.

You did say, “I understand the science of masks. [but] the reasoning is flawed if we're going to pretend...”

Which is so dumb because you’re the one pretending. Most deny-er’s deny the science but accept the reasoning. You sound like the opposite, which is weird because it actually sounds dumber when you think about it.

And you do suck cat 🥜

July 14, 2020 CDC Director: The United States could get the spread of the novel coronavirus “under control” within a matter of weeks if everyone wore face coverings, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield said Tuesday. “I think if we could get everybody to wear a mask now,” Redfield said in July, “I think in four, six, eight weeks, we could bring this epidemic under control.”1

December 27, 2020 Study results: While mask-wearing can help to reduce transmission of COVID-19, data show that mask mandates in the U.S. and other countries did not prevent a surge of cases.
During the U.S. surge in the fall, 97 of the 100 counties with the most confirmed cases had either a county-level mask mandate, a state-level mandate, or both.

Masks are like saran wrap condoms. Just a false sense of security.

This is an example of some of the stupidity (or out right dishonesty) we get from the so called experts, which leads to no one believing them. If anyone thinks masks can control the pandemic, look no further than California .

The honest assessment of masks is that they provide some marginal mitigation to the spread, but keeping socially distanced has a much greater benefit. As such, you should remain socially distanced but if you cant, then wear a mask. I do think the grossly exaggerated (or out right false) statements by experts about the effectiveness of masks have likely lead to a false sense of security and a potential exacerbation of the spread.

Bingo. People think wearing one in your car alone does something. I go to the gym or store, but keep my distance and avoid being close to strangers. I have zero reason to think chin diapers will keep you from getting if you have close contact with a symptomatic person in an unventilated , enclosed space .

Close to my take on things, but I think a lot of spread among younger people is from individuals who have symptoms that aren't knocking them on their ass that don't self isolate. Public health measures rely on public cooperation and when people like Fauci lie and admit it later it undermines public trust. Not to mention the media spreading pandemic porn obviously thinking eyeballs are more important than accurate information. Or numerous leaders ignoring their own restrictions. Or lockdowns again when there isn't evidence it does any good. Not the finest performance by our so called "elites".

I posted that on another board, and some Idiot said "They were all wearing Trump stuff, it was his supporters."

I asked if Allied spies infiltrating the German lines during WWII wore Allied uniforms, and haven't heard back.

agree with some of what you are saying greenie, but think the blm comparison lacks sufficient nuance. i should preface it by saying i don't support any violence by anybody, before some moron suggests such. anyway, back to my point, those rioters in d.c. were being treated with kid gloves by the cops, even though several were armed. don't recall any blm rioters making it anywhere close to getting in to a government building, much less the capital. as a person of color, i would think you also might agree that the cops treat non-white people differently - for example, look at how the missoula cops treated your friend trumaine johnson. also, the blm folks who weren't rioters were attacked by white supremacist groups, don't know that anybody was out attacking the proud patriots who stormed the capital and made the u.s. the laughing stock of the world. i'll conclude by saying i don't think the situations are really as similar as you seem to believe, although i do understand why you would make that point. just don't agree with the example.

Ok. Well let’s try again.

We’re asked to mask up to slow the spread of this virus and save lives. Is this true?????? Is saving lives the most important thing in this battle??????

Do masks help slow the spread of other viruses as well, or ONLY this particular virus??????

If masks only prevent the spread and save lives from THIS virus, than I retract all further questions. I’m asking these questions with the presumption that a mask would be beneficial in saving lives from many viruses. Am I wrong in that belief??????

Do people die from other viruses such as the flu every year????? I’m on record on this very board saying I thought this was the case, but admitted if it’s not I retract all these questions. And yes, these are questions I have asked several times, despite you being unable to find them.

So the final question I posed, several times, is why are masks so important in saving these specific lives this year, but not worth the time all other years even though we KNOW wearing them would save lives??????

Are people not being hypocritical lobbying for mask use now, but not going forward, despite the fact that lives could be saved??????

You can educate me all you want about “novel” virus, “new strains”, “once a lifetime pandemic” all you want. It doesn’t change anything I said one iota. People die from viruses and illnesses every year. Wearing masks could prevent many of those deaths. That’s just science. Compare it to whatever you want, it doesn’t change the fact. If your mother died from the flu in 2019, and not the coronavirus in 2020, I highly doubt you’d sing the same tune.

If you really care about saving lives and protecting your neighbors that’s great! Mask up, social distance and all the other good stuff. But if you’re (maybe not you specifically) are going to shout from rooftops about mask wearing, you should practice what you preach; ALL of the time, and not one little year long period to pretend you’re saving mankind.

I’m sure this will be received with some witty insults and the like. It’s par for the course these days. Cancel culture. But is was simply reiterating questions I’ve asked before that you were unable to find.

My main point was that the CNN's of the world covered the DC crowds/storming/rioting completely different than they covered the BLM matters, not that the two events, or series of events in the case of BLM, were the same or similar. The DC events were covered all days long, with very dramatic statements. Much of the BLM stuff was either played down, ignored, or supported.

While yesterday was bad and stupid and sometimes embarrassing, for many reasons, no cars or buildings were burned, and there didn't seem to be alot of big clashes between protestors/mobs and the police.

While the capitol police were restrained, and apparently unprepared, I don't think the woman/veteran who was shot and killed was treated with kid gloves. 80 arrests so far, and more coming. 5 for weapons violations. Half of the arrests were not at the capitol.

I see that many administration workers are not fleeing the sinking ship. I see that Steve Daines ultimately didn't follow Cruz and vote with him. I see that Trump is now banned from Facebook and Instagram. Not sure what I think of that, from a first amendment/civil liberty point of view. Pence and McConnell stepped up and held their ground. Good for them. Trump has no said there will be an orderly transition.

I have never liked Trump since I ran across him about 1980, and NYC banking/business, and always thought he was a bad person, really bad it turns out, and am glad he has shown his true colors to more people since he lost the election. Fine with giving him credit for some good policies and accomplishments, tho. Hoping the US has basically get rid of him in the political world. Not sure about his base.

Yes, some cops don't some blacks and POC, especially Indians in MT, as well as some whites. I hope that continues to improve. I was always taught to stay away from police and never say or do anything around them. That's still my policy. As the years have gone on, I've met alot of great cops, and some, like Chuck Burton, are good friends of mine and my family.

I'm worried about the Dems having control of the Senate, although I still wonder if Senators like Tester will be able to follow the ultra-liberal/left line. Hopefully, vulnerable Senators like Tester will keep the Bernie/Warren ideas from sailing through.

See emphasis above.

You keep talking about all these other viruses. Which ones are causing a world-wide pandemic? Oh, only the ONE for which we are masking? Got it.

So you are just making up this other weird “reasoning”? It’s like you’re stuck in this vicious cycle of nonsense. (And you thought my tire analogy was dumb. Ha!)

None of your questions make any sense in the context of this pandemic. Instead, it’s just your goofy way of rationalizing it for yourself, even tho you “agree with the science.” Let me guess: you’re probably in the medical field so you have no choice?

I thought you were somewhat intelligent before but you sound more and more like Cuervo with each post. Not a good week for you guys. Maybe stop while you can. Or not; I don’t care, I actually get a kick out of reading the nonsense from you guys. So I’m certainly not trying to cancel anybody. Keep up the good fight.

But first, you never did answer my question. You said it’s not about saving lives. So what do you think it’s about? Why are you pretending?
