Scheduling FBS opponents - good or bad?

I seem to recall out last Duck game was a blow out at well like 42 to 7.

47-14. UM D played well. Oregon scored 3 offensive TDs against our 2. UO had 6 FGs, a safety and a kickoff return. We had a new, poor QB (Jason Washington); 3 and outs and 3 TOs killed our D. BH finally put in frosh Cole Bergquist in Q4, who marched them down the field to score against the UO subs.

We'll be there again.

Maybe. But some of us like the idea of having the possibility of being in the playoffs and the chance to be a National Champion in at least one sport.

Not in my opinion, no . we need to be scheduling all FCS with a sprinkle of FBS, but we should never schedule a division 2 team ever. There’s literally no upside to scheduling a game like that. It can only hurt you for playoffs and a blowout win does nothing

The rub is that, consistent with your logic, no FBS program should schedule us...ever...for the exact same reasons.

One difference - FBS is allowed to count an FCS win (provided they give 90%-100% of allowed schollies) as a win for Bowl purposes. The Equivalent would be for FCS to "count" 1 DII win provided they met a minimum Schollie requirement

Still, nothing good can come from that game for the FBS school.

You are assuming that we will always get our butts kicked. Is that the attitude that your friends on the team have?

I am against these games. We can make as much money scheduling an additional home game. The problem is getting a quality FCS team to agree to come to Missoula.

I am against these games. We can make as much money scheduling an additional home game. The problem is getting a quality FCS team to agree to come to Missoula.

I don't think UM really has had a problem getting quality FCS teams to Missoula lately. Montana has shown the ability to get quality teams to Missoula in recent years with Liberty (2012), App State (2013), NDSU (2015), and UNI (2018). I do think it's unrealistic to think we can have a quality program in Missoula every year for these reasons:

1) Scheduling non-conference games is difficult and done years in advance. To get quality teams on the schedule, hopefully they have some openings on the same dates as you.

2) When we do have home games against quality FCS teams, they are connected to home-and-home agreements. During the seasons where Montana is on the road for those home-and-home agreements, UM usually pads the home non-con schedule with weaker opponents to help mitigate any blow to the teams record should the Griz lose to the quality team on the road. That's why typically ever other year, Montana's non-conf schedule appears lackluster most times.

I think its a good thing for the Griz, because you don't have to financially do it every year like everyone else in the FBS, so the Griz play an FBS game, maybe every 4 years so each class gets a game? I know Eastern's players love the FBS games, especially when you keep them in the PNW, or West Coast, I'd imagine the Griz players are jacked to play Oregon this year...

I hate this mentality. We’ll take our money and ass kicking, and move on. I remember talking to guys on the team before the ‘07 game against Iowa. They were beaten before the got on the plane.

NDSU and EWU have competed very well against FBS teams. Not sure why we have adopted a roll over mentality.

I think they will go the WAC route, but 2020 seems ambitious at this stage.

Ya, that was actually a pretty good showing against UO. Be a lot tougher in 2019, probably more like the UW game.

100%? Do you have a source? I know they’d like to be. I’d like to be a millionaire.

I know a big booster for the program. He told me that was the plan for about 5 years now with a goal of 2020, but yes like everything it is not 100%. However, there are a lot of people throwing money at it to make it happen, the school is growing, it seems fairly likely.
