How ironic. My Son-in-Law asked for something "bourbon-y" for Christmas and I have little experience with bourbons. Thanks guys. I have some Japanese Yamazaki whisky that is my favorite. I'll try to get Hibiki or Suntory. Is 12 yr the best?
i don't recall the age on those but they are both awesome. if you like the yamazaki like i do, you'll love both the suntory or hibiki. :thumb:

Bunch of snobs.

I like beer or moonshine. It's cheap, like me.

Ya, I'm a redneck! So what

I am in a wine club. We do our tasting and get them the first of the next month. I open a bottle and I couldn't tell you what one it is and why I liked it. I liked it that night and I usually like it when we get it. I could go out to a restaurant and look at their wine list and I would do just as well closing my eyes and picking one. I am the same way with whisky. Put it in front of me and I will drink it as long as it is smooth. No ice, not water. I like craft beers. Scotch Ales and Porters in the fall and Winter and Pale ales and IPAs in the spring and summer.

Maybe I am a redneck?

Weird, my taste in craft beers matches yours and during the same seasons, except I'll drink an IPA anytime.

I can't do wine due to, again, the tannins. Wonder why Canadian Whiskey is doable for me?

I prefer a Kentucky Bourbon over Canadian Whiskey. I tried Scotch in the past, but I think it was some cheap stuff my brother in law had. I will try some of the good stuff again.

I do have to agree. If in doubt, the IPA is my fall back beer that I can drink any time of the year, but it is my favorite after a day doing yard work or a day on the lake. By far it is my favorite summer beer. I am currently a few weeks into Porter season.
Had some of Draught Works Mexican chocolate porter tonight. Very nice.

Pretty good deal going on JD by the barrel at . . . Costco!

I also prefer American bourbon over Canadian whiskey. Canadian whiskey is usually "blended" with Rye in an attempt to make it smoother. I like the bite in bourbon.

Stack that on top of a few rotisserie chickens, a couple dozen croissants, some cheese by the box load and you've got a party. Excellent.

Love it when we talk about biting!

Not a scotch fan but I have heard good things about Highland from those that are. Also not a green towel fan but I have heard good.....never mind.

Yeah, I thought that was a weird serving platform and background for a $90 bottle of scotch, but different strokes . . .

If you're going to pay that much, Lagavulin is the way to go. Just ask Ron Swanson. :thumb:

Me too. But my volume requirement is too high for me to be a bourbon snob. I drink imported Old Granddad (imported from CO, where it's cheaper - $19/1.75 by the case). If I run out I keep some Ten High for emergencies. Same with beer; no yuppie beer for me; Bud Select or Bud Real if it's not available. Found what I like at a young age and have never found a reason to switch. Product loyalty....

The two aren't mutually exclusive. My 2 favorites are Makers 46 (bourbon) and Pendelton 1910 (Canadian). Neither of which is all that expensive. Of course if you've burned your taste buds out, it's whatever's cheapest :thumb:

Funny shit. This thread has huge potential.

Great first post in the thread by Badlands, got a nice laugh out of that one.

My wife was texting me earlier that she ran into a well-heeled gent we know at the liquor store, and that he was purchasing a $260 bottle of single malt something or other, and that they had a discussion. More recently she said that I was going to love the gift she got me today. I may have to snoop around... :)

With all the other lame, argumentative sh*t proliferating here at Christmas, I felt the need to bump this one. Let's not let one of the few good ones get buried...

Well, as you can see below, she finally gave it up ('bout damn time). And as you can also see I've gotten into it a bit. Though I would say the assertion that "afterwards you'll discover lemon curd and meringue" is a bit of a stretch, it's pretty damn good. Not the $260 per stuff, but pretty good. I guess I'd say it's light and fruity, like AG1 :thumb:

f*** scotch! Bourbon is where its at! The End!

This. Pappy Van Winkle is a friend of mine.

I've never had it. Is it really worth the coin?
it's good stuff but no where near worth what they ask for for a bottle of the stuff. couple hundred bucks for the 10 year, 400 plus for 15 year, 8 something for the 20 year, and if you can ever get your hands on the 23, in montana it'll run over a grand. the 15yr is the best of the bunch in my opinion.

the headframe was in fact a pretty good whisky coming from montana. but they recently outsourced and the recipe changed. pretty dramatically if you ask me. i think they'll find that was the biggest mistake they ever made. although, they have their orphan girl cream that sells like crazy so they'll be ok. but leaving montana for their whisky was not wise, again, in my opinion.
Surprised to hear that Headframe would contract something out, since they themselves are a contract distiller for many other distilleries.

Glenlivet 12 year or Craggenmore. Truthfully though I've never had a bad pizza, piece of tail or a glass of
single malt Scotch.
