Mr. Wahlberg goes to Helena UPDATED w/post comments

First off - Thanks Brint for all your efforts on this! Second - I noticed one of the speakers along with you was Joe Speaker not Jim Spiker. Thanks Joe for making yourself heard! I certainly hope this is not over like many of you think it is!

Thanks Brint for all you do!

The thing that I noticed while PW was speaking was that he referred to the "students that weren't in the country" anymore while defending his comments. It seems to me that he is trying to bring the Saudi student in to this and make it seem like the Saud is a "thug" as well. That doesn't fly with me because PW certainly didn't specify non-athletic "thugs" in his comments. I just can't get over that and I can't imagine I'm the only one that noticed it.

The most disturbing thing Brint reported was that he's a democrat...oeeewww.........
No shit... :?

I have always assumed that all fizz fans are dems :thumb:
It is not unusual for your assumptions to be dead wrong. An assumption that all Missoulians are dems would be closer....

Correction made, I was a little fuzzy on all of the details as I typed. Thanks

Pat Duffy, PW's former assistant, was Federal Judge Don Molloy's clerk for years and also taught economics at UM. Duffy's comments should be taken pretty seriously, but I doubt the hacks in Helena will have the nads to turn down the almighty Pat Williams.

Jim Foley testifying against PW is a joke. Foley played an instrumental part in many of these administrative fumbles and his word is worth no more than the vitriol that came out of Williams' own mouth.

I felt Jim Foley's comments were excellent when you consider he was a good friend. He hit on the key point here. The comments were misleading. It did not matter if it was 6 or 20 or 1 player. It was a grossly irresponsible comment. I feel Foley did a good job of hammering that point home.

Thanks for all your efforts Brint. Kind of ironic in a way, but all the key opponents that testified against Pat’s nomination are Democrats ... I believe. Who knows, maybe that will work to our advantage.

For sure, the machine was in full force do agree ... this isn't over.

On the full floor Im hoping the Republicans will bring up why in the heck do we need life long politicians as regents. As I understand it this is very unusual ... for a regent to be that connected to interest groups. Isn't it obvious, if Pat Williams is on the board he will be in charge ... or at a minimum he will be performing his lone super hero routine ... because that’s what life long politicians do.

That’s exactly what we do not need on the board.

Its a shame that some comments can derail a good mans career last year with probable pressure from the regents but another persons comments will have no ill effect on this decision.

One interesting thing that no media outlet commented on was that Jim Foley made point, and even looked at Pat Williams when he said it, that he is also fully aware of what it feels like and what happens when the media takes your comments out of context.

Suprised O'day didn't speak... Did you have any conversations with him Brint?

I didn't I got in there before they arrived and they left before it was all over.

Pat Williams comments DID NOT just begin with his article in the New York paper...

The following is from an article in the March 30, 2012 Kaimin (Volume CXIV Issue 90):

Regent Pat Williams, who joined the board in February, said he learned of the firings Thursday morning and had heard second-hand that the president does not appreciate the attitude of athletic department officials.
“Unfortunately, that’s an attitude of imperialism that is too common in the big athletic departments like ours throughout the country,” he said, adding that he supports Engstrom’s decision to fire O’Day and Pflugrad.
Williams said he personally believes the decision was a result of the Athletic Department’s response to allegations of sexual assault and “violent fights” among teammates.
“Neither Mr. O’Day nor Coach Pflugrad have demonstrated publically that they are taking these violent transgressions, which have gone on for years, seriously enough,” he said.

Me thinks that perhaps Mr. Williams played a role in Jim Foley's demotion. Payback is hell![/quote

Also, it has been said, but not publicly that PW strong armed a new President with little gonads into firing O'day and Pflugrad. I heard this from the horse's mouth. O'day is just not going public about it. He's too nice of a guy.

Word in the halls of the capitol (where most of the important stuff gets done) is that even PW's supporters are admitting that the hearing did not help his cause. He spoke far too long and in an overbearing manner; his leaning against the podium was disrespectful and connoted a false familiarity not appropriate to a serious occasion; and most damning of all, is that two former staffers and dedicated Democrats, spoke against his confirmation.

It's not too late for Pat to do the graceful thing ........ decide that his medical issues require him to leave the Board of Regents on his own terms, rather than face the prospect of a bloody rejection.

But don't hold your breath waiting for Pat to do anything gracefully.

One side note: remember that Carol, Pat's wife and co-conspirator, would seemingly be an important ally since she just termed out of the Senate last year. Not the case, however. Carol was not liked by a big group in the Senate, just about all Repubs and even some D's. So she actually hurts his cause rather than supports it.
