Prediction: True Freshman Ryan McKinley will be a starting Safety by mid-season.

wow. Bold prediction. Tullys spot?? Gamboa should arrive this year as well.

McKinney played corner with the 3rds/4ths.

What were your overall impressions of his play? Could you see him as a possible safety convert? I am really excited about his potential at any position in our secondary, but personally would love to see him developed as a S. Sounds like Strahm made a big play at Safety, when many thought he would be moved to OLB.

Very excited about the potential of our young DBs

McKinney looked fine in the 2 or 3 plays I focused on him. Didn't noticed him make any obvious mistakes. Don't really have enough data to just him. Looks like he has decent size.

In warm ups, I counted 8 corners and 7 safeties.

Strahm is big. When he got the pick, I assumed he was a backer. The play was a corner blitz from the right side. The corner moved inaisw to blitz position at the last moment. The running back, I think Favors, let him go and went out for the pass. The corner was in the qb (Gustaf)'s face quickly. Don't know if the rb should have stayed to pick up the blitz or not. Favors was open short. The pass went downfield to the next receiver. The qb didn't see Strahm breaking on the ball. Not a good read of throw. Strahm was in perfect position to get the pick. I assume they were in cover 3, but maybe it was another coverage. Don't know if Strahm gambled, or how he got in such good position.

McKinley did break up a pass in the endzone. Both he and the receiver went up for it. The ball was a little under thrown but the coverage was good, thats for sure

Wouldn't be surprised if Strahm challenges for a safety spot. He sounds impressive.

He wasnt playing saftey last night. He has good size though and decent speed. He doesnt look like he's 6'2 though...

Really? I thought I read that he was. Was he OLB, then?

Yeah.. He was playing OLB when he picked six Gustafson.. It definitely was the biggest moment for the defense last night.

To hear Jordy picked apart this secondary, doesn't really make me feel extremely good about the offense either. ND QB killed this secondary...

He didn't pick apart the secondary. About half of the completions were to running backs, which generally aren't the responsibility of the secondary. There were 2 good passes that got through the secondary. One for 51, and a td pass to Harper in the endzone.

Well now that sounds better...I guess I am still a little skeptical about this "D". I believe the offense will be almost unstoppable if healthy.

The TD to Harper was the best pass he threw all night. He put it only where the receiver could catch it. I really liked what i seen from the running backs after they caught the ball..

Im not too worried about the secondary just yet, it was the first scrimmage of the year. Overall, the defense didnt play that well to begin with. We'll see how they perform this Saturday.

At this point In camp, I think it's more important that Johnson looked good as opposed to the secondary looking good. His performance last night should give Griz Nation a big " sigh of relief" that there's no apparent rustiness to his game. I think that is important to the "mind set" of the team too. IMO If Johnson has a a solid year, all the secondary has to do is improve on last on year's performance. If the secondary just "moves the needle" in a positive way, the Griz should have a good year.

THen why be skeptical of the way the D played? Perhaps they're playing against the best offense they'll see all season... 8-)

My assessment of the scrimmage (and it was only a first scrimmage, so things will likely change in the next one) is that both the first team O and first team D played quite well, but the O got the best of the D a bit. The keys were the handful of 3rd and long conversions by the O and the strong play of JJ.

Van is going to be a big contributor. I think Jones is too, but he didn't get much opportunity. Harper, the frosh tight end, looked good on his recpetions, and his run after a short reception to pick up one of those 3rd and longs. I've been hearing good things about him since the spring. Good athlete. His dad played hoops for Weber. Shaw's leg is huge, and improved. They guys in the trenches, and at backer, must have been good, but I wasn't focusing on them. Both the Boise transfer and Hagfors look like players at fullback. Canada looked good and hit the hole hard. Counts has alot of talent and will be a contributor. Warren looked good. John Nguyen looks promising. Backup qb's look better and more confident. There's lots of depth on the team, and there'll be some competition. The team looks very athletic, compared to historical UM teams.

the 1 offense went 12 plays, 80 yards on its first possession.
five plays, 35 yards on the second.
three plays, six yards on the last drive.

20 plays, 121 yards and three tds with at least five starters out. that's called owning the defense. i'm sure the d will bounce back, its just the first scrimmage, so no reason to sugarcoat it.

a) Extremely basic defense - by design
b) Scrimmage rules favoring offense

At some point in your life (maybe), you'll begin to look BEYOND simple "statistics" and realize there's more to the game than what's on a piece of paper. There's nothing to "sugarcoat".

Now that is what I would love! I hope that is the case, however?

Spot on post, especially the last sentence.
