Griz Secondary?

I haven't heard much on Coyle. Did he play in the scrimmage?

Besides JP's shoestring tackle on Van, the linebacking corps was fairly quite on the night. Not bad, not great.

wow. Bold prediction. Tullys spot?? Gamboa should arrive this year as well.

McKinney played corner with the 3rds/4ths.

What were your overall impressions of his play? Could you see him as a possible safety convert? I am really excited about his potential at any position in our secondary, but personally would love to see him developed as a S. Sounds like Strahm made a big play at Safety, when many thought he would be moved to OLB.

Very excited about the potential of our young DBs

McKinney looked fine in the 2 or 3 plays I focused on him. Didn't noticed him make any obvious mistakes. Don't really have enough data to just him. Looks like he has decent size.

In warm ups, I counted 8 corners and 7 safeties.

Strahm is big. When he got the pick, I assumed he was a backer. The play was a corner blitz from the right side. The corner moved inaisw to blitz position at the last moment. The running back, I think Favors, let him go and went out for the pass. The corner was in the qb (Gustaf)'s face quickly. Don't know if the rb should have stayed to pick up the blitz or not. Favors was open short. The pass went downfield to the next receiver. The qb didn't see Strahm breaking on the ball. Not a good read of throw. Strahm was in perfect position to get the pick. I assume they were in cover 3, but maybe it was another coverage. Don't know if Strahm gambled, or how he got in such good position.

Really good analysis of the Strahm interception, PR.

The only thing I'd like to add if I could is the good speed Strahm showed on getting that thing in the endzone. After Strahm headed up field, the short target Tre Favors made a dive at him but missed...and Naccarato, who was the deeper reciever, trailed in pursuit (granted Strahm had a good headstart) and could not catch him before the goal-line.

I think the Griz coaches definitly have it right, he is a good looking OLB. (The next Tripp)

After reading that he made the interception playing safety, I was glad to see, later, that he'd been playing linebacker, which is where I "felt" he'd been playing. That explains why he was able to jump the throw so quickly. Maybe he was running so fast because he knew Tripp was chasing him down the sideline (off the field).

I know it's early, and I'm not tryin' to beat a dead horse here, but the only thing that scares me more than the secondary is the kicking game. :twocents:

The missed PAT against App was a back breaker. Would have tied it at 28 after Moore's rumble.

oh, that's right. And here we all thought it was mckinney's fault.

Yeah..it seems like the kicking game can't win it for us, but it can surely blow it up. :grenade: :egriz:

ANYTHING that CHANGES momentum in a football game is HUGE. :egriz:

I think people are underestimating how difficult it is to make the transition from High School ball to College ball, especially at DB. Regardless of where you played your HS ball at, there is a huge difference in the speed and complexity of the college game compared to HS. These freshmen are promising, but to expect them to come in and compete at a high level right away is very wishful thinking. There is a reason you very rarely see true freshmen starting much less getting pressed into PT at positions such as the OL, QB, LB, and DB.

Great post HLG. On the way to work this morning, I was listening to sports radio in Omaha. Former Husker, Jay Foreman commented on this years Husker team. He mentioned how young they were and what he wants to see and hear is good communications early. He says all young inexperienced Offenses and Defenses will have struggles and get beat. He said the ones that communicate well will improve, the ones that struggle with that will not much make progress. He mentioned how many college football fans just cannot grasp the reality of great athletes struggling at any age on the football field. He said coaching staffs realistically expect the struggles, but also expect those struggling to learn and improve on it. If a young player cannot learn and improve from it, then it is time to find someone else to do the job.

I immediately thought of the GRIZ secondary last season and what to expect this season. If our staff has that outlook, the heat is on Tully and Hermanson to step their games up. :thumb:

I need to correct something I said after the scrimmage. I can't remember where I said it though and don't have the time or energy to find it, so I will say it here...it's probably in this thread anyways.

I said #12 Hermanson was on the coverage on the 51 yard completion, however I saw the video tonight and it was actually #14 Dennard. My apologies. (Hermanson wasn't even on the field, the two safeties were #31 Whitted and #30 Tulley)
