Frank Gogola Article

There have been exactly 4 teams with a legitimate chance to win the FCS National Championship in the last 15 years.

NDSU
SDSU
JMU
EWU

15 YEARS. That's it, the only arguments are rings.
Griz have been to the title game one time in that 15 years. I am not saying that’s Hauck’s fault. It just points to the problems in the program. I couldn’t agree more your sentiments.

I'm not bragging, but being 4th, by some decent or good measurement, is a good indication that a team is up near the top. A team doesn't have to win the championship to be near the top.

And, it isn't the same 4-6 teams every year that could win it. NDSU and now SDSU. The other teams in that grouping change from year to year and over time. The Cats sure weren't in that grouping last season, and the Griz weren't this season. 3 of the 5 Griz loses this year we are to teams in that top 6, or damn close. The other losses were to what turned out to are a not-so-good Weber team and a decent but not great MV team. Yes, the Griz still lost 5 games, but they weren't a bunch of losses to weak teams.
It may also be an indication a team is up near the top of a very watered down division. If NDSU, SDSU and MSU moved up, the Griz would have a great shot of being in the top 2. Big damn whoop.

Dude, and I don't need your BS talking about your great expertise in recruiting from 7 on 7 camps. I can see what you post, and often see that you don't know what you are talking about. 7 on 7 camps to get your vast football expertise. Now that's pretty funny. I know lots of people know a lot, but I can also see that you aren't one of them.

Maybe, but I like the current FCS. There are a good number of good teams, and a good group of teams that have good or very good years every few years. On the other hand, why be in the bottom of a big group of teams where your team is never going to anywhere close to the top or the top conferences or in the top conferences? I don't see the excitement of not playing extra hard to make the playoffs and have better seeding, and just being left with playing for the conference championship and whatever minor or tiny bowl game might be assigned to you.

I'd call Weber 4 wins 8 losses and UND 5 wins 7 losses weak teams by any metric. Those were horrible losses for a team with this much talent. You do realize that last year the Cats lost on the road to #1, #2, at home to #3, and on the road to #6, don't you? #1 by 4 points & had a TD overturned in the last minute, #2 blowout, #3 by 1 point on a blocked extra point in OT, and #6 by 3 points - missed 2 field goals and dropped a td pass. Brutal schedule, but they didn't lose to a patsy. Aren't you famous for this quote "The point is not the record of the teams UM beat, it's the quality and record of the teams UM almost beat." ??? The Griz had a ton of talent this year & returned from a natty run - and shit the bed. That's on the coaches. That's what Egrizzers are concerned about. Not your irrelevant spin doctoring.

Recruiting has changed, and the things Griz fans think matter like the stadium, fan support, etc don't matter to kids like they did a decade ago. There are fewer kids playing football, and more opportunities at FBS with all the schools that have moved up, so the FCS recruiting pool has shrunk. The Dakotas have a decided advantage with their location near Minneapolis and other Midwest population centers with similar weather than Montana does. The days of Montana winning 12 games each season by out recruiting other FCS schools is past. Any individual kid can find as many positives at Davis or Tarleton or So. Illinois as they can find at UM because they all value things differently.

I said Weber was weak. Read my post. UM lost to 3 top teams, a decent but not great MV team and a weak Weber team. Davis, MSU and SDSU are not weak teams. UND was not a horrible loss at the time. Those 2 losses were by only a few points. I was discussing the Griz, not the Cats. Why do you have to bring up the Cats even when I'm talking about the Griz? Yes, I used that quote to refer to the losses at SS and Weber a couple years ago. It was specific to that discussion. I stand by that. I have made no argument that the Griz had a great, or almost great, season, or a great or almost great team. In fact, I have said the opposite.

A lot of the Griz fans don't think that it turned out that the Griz had a ton of talent. The Griz never got a good or very good established QB. The season would have been very different with an established QB. As I said, trade QB's in the Griz/Cat game, and the Griz win. The Griz didn't shit the bed. The Griz had a disappointing season and could never get hitting on all cylinders on both sides of the ball at the same time.

You can say its on the coaches, but you don't know. Saying the Griz shit the bed tells me that you don't know what you are talking about.

And, at the end of the day, if a team doesn't win enough games, then, no matter what excuses are made or reasons are given, you aren't a good or good enough team. I accept that. Many Cat fans can't accept that. I don't know where you stand on that. I don't pay much attention to your posts.

Amazing how important Champions Center, Bubble, Athletic Academic Center, stadium, crowd support, established university and community in a growing national hot spot were.....before UM had all of them!

Location and winning are two off the top of my head. Most kids not from Montana could really care less about tradition and boosters. Montana also lags behind the Dakotas with financial incentives for players.

Location doesn’t hold water. South Dakota? Recruiting is national anymore. You just got done saying most kids not from Montana. Well that means they aren’t from the Dakota’s more than likely either. Kids don’t care about boosters, but they do care about facilities and fans in the stands. Regionally, Montana can pull from plenty of populated areas and has before. Winning, well Montana was winning last year and regressed. They didn’t reload. Other teams reload. Three of the other top 4 right now reloaded. One in the state of Montana. I will give you cost of attendance for the Dakotas. Also NIL is a factor. One thing you neglected to mention. Coaching.

Location does matter. Climate matters. Everything matters. But keep burying your head in the sand. I am not saying Montana can't do better, but Montana doesn't have all the advantages that you keep saying they do, even over schools like Davis or Weber.

I think we know who is burying their head in the sand. Those that want to minimize the problems with the program.

The Cats have made it to the semi finals four times in the past five years. The griz have made it to the semi finals ONCE in the past....... I don't even know..... 20 years? That's astounding.
