LadyGriz Former Lady Griz Battle - Carroll v. Western

Shelby Schweyen won the Big Sky Conference Indoor women's pentathlon for Montana State track and field.

Getting "cut" by the ruthless new coach seems to have worked out for her too.

Pickens will be first team all-American again this season. Will be unanimous MVP of conference. In past 2 games, for her 23-4 team, she's had: 25 points in 7-10 shooting, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 10-10 from line; and 28 points in 10-18 shooting, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, 8-10 from line. "Pickens played in 29 of 30 games for the Lady Griz as a true freshman. She averaged 17.1 minutes per game and scored 7.6 points while pulling down 3.6 rebounds."

Murphy just started her 28th game for 23-5 UT-Chatt. Has started 36 games.

Momberg has a nice game recently. Scored 20 and 6-10 from 3, with 6 assists. Shooting 45% and 40% (3) in conference.

Getting cut was better for all of them, because they got away from a rookie coach who wasn't going to give them a chance. My point was never about whether it would work out where they went. It was whether they should have been summarily cut, whether one or more of them could have helped the LG, and what was gotten in return in new players. Also, a bit of wondering whether Carroll would beat the LG know with Murphy and Momberg. Pickens would eat up the LG.

I assume the coach didn't think Schweyen was athletic enough.

Pickens and Murphy chose to leave with the coaching change, Not sure how that is on the current coach. I am happy for Willa, but I don't think she is better than those that were playing in front of her.

Pickens chose to leave after the first coaching change. Murphy chose to leave due to the second coaching change. I think Murphy made the right decision because I don't she would be as good in a live by the 3, die by the 3 offense.

Pickens plays for Carroll. One of my discussions is whether Carroll would be the LG, with Murphy and Momberg. I'm not aware Murphy was given a choice. Murphy is a sold rebounder.

After 3 years, of the current starters, the LG have 2 players brought in by the prior coaches (and the 2 best players), 2 players who will be out of eligibility, and 1 other coming back. Only 2 of the 5 return. Maybe the bench is incredibly strong, but that sure doesn't show me that the new coach brought in a bunch of new good players (after 6 players moved on in his first week or two). Maybe this will be the year, when the LG finally win a conference game and even make big noise, but the early cheerleading for the coach and continued excuses by some, defy gravity. He needs to produce. The team is on a nice roll and playing well. Maybe they have finally hit their stride and the 3's will keep falling.

Bruno has started the majority of the season (85% of games to be exact, every game until she missed with injury), so they’ll return three players who started the majority of the season.

Huard has a chance to be a star, but I think much of next season will depend on the progression of the post players and who Holsinger brings in through the portal. And the return of the 5 injured players.

How many conference tourney games will LG win?

One would hope at least one to make it to the semifinals. I don’t believe the Lady Griz have made the semifinals since winning the tournament in 2014-15.

We know Pickens plays for Carroll. Also know she wasn't cut by Holsinger over Zoom. What's does Pickens not wanting to play for Petrino have to do with Holsinger?

I believe only 2 of the 6 "cut" players ever touched a court again. Momberg and Murphy. They've done pretty well. Good for them. The others must not have had enough "stuff" to play anywhere.

Carroll would never "be" (Ivy League?) the Lady Griz. They will always "be" Carroll. Murphy may be a "sold" (Ivy?) rebounder but Bartsch is a "solid" one who's better.

You should change your name to "SchweyenRep"!

Murphy averages 2.5 rebounds a game. Bartsch averages 9.9 rebounds. Murphy could be a "sold" rebounder, but Bartsch is an outstanding rebounder. Murphy's "Sold" rebounding is more comparable to Marxen's 2.2 rebounding average and Maggie's 2.1 rebounding average.

Bartsch is a terrific player and great rebounder. Murphy starts on a much better team than the LG.

I see that Murphy is 8th in the Southern Conference in blocks. She was 4th in the conference in blocks her frosh year. I believe she is a good defender, but don't know for sure. :

"2021-22 Freshman
- Played in 28 games (missing two due to illness) and made nine starts.
- Scored a career-high 14 points against ETSU; averged 4.3 points per game.
- Pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds; had double-digit rebounds three times.
- Led team in blocked shots 12 times.
- Recorded a career-high six blocked shots against ETSU; had three on one possession.
- Second on the team in blocked shots with 31; fourth in the SoCon; 177th in the NCAA.
- Recorded two double-doubles.
- Five games with double-figure scoring.
- Made first collegiate start in her first game with the Mocs in the season-opener against Belmont."

Why do you have to badmouth Murphy?

Pickens plays for Carroll. I'd like to see Carroll play for the LG. I think Carroll would beat the LG, if Murphy and Momberg were added to Carroll. That's Pickens' relevance. Western beat UM in a pre-season scrimmage last season. I wasn't talking Holsinger in this subtopic. Was talking about Carroll playing LG. Do you really not know how to read?

Murphy plays for UT-Chattanooga, not the Ivy League.

Did you ever play D-I basketball or college varsity basketball anywhere? Did you even graduate from college? What have you ever achieved? Anything of note?

Obviously, you never went to an Ivy or other good school like Stanford. Not smart enough to get in. You have developed a big chip on your shoulder. You should change your name from Mouse to Chip.

I have been reading these pages for some time, but don't post, but this thread prompted a response.

mthoopsfan a few questions.

1. What is your goal? When I look back it seems it has been to defend players who are no longer with the team or bad mouth the coach. So I ask, what is your goal?
2. I appreciate you are passionate about players who have left, but could you show the same passion and move your energy towards being positive about the players who are currently on the team?
3. The comparison doesn't matter. Why would you like to see Carroll play the LG, what would you gain? What if they lost, what would you say? What if they won, would you feel vindicated in all of your bashing of the current team and coach? Cheer on those who left and cheer on those who are present.

The tone of your posts feel like someone who carries a grudge, needs to be right, is bitter and is generally looking to break down people and teams.

Can I make a suggestion. Since you are so high on Carroll and past players, why don't you go join those teams boards and use all of your energy to encourage, lift up and tell them how much you believe in them.

Your voice is getting old and your perseveration about the past makes it seems you are stuck in the past. I heard something once, when you have a foot in the past and a foot in the future (focus on playoff wins) you are pissing on the present. It seems that is all you are really interested in, pissing on the present. Why don't you just enjoy this team, the players who are on it, support the coach and see what happens. It feels like they are headed the right direction generally and have had increasing success, in college basketball that seems like something most "fans" of the team could get behind...but maybe your aren't a fan and ultimately that defines your goals...

I don't have a goal. Sometimes I do some research, like looking at what former Griz are doing, and post the information. Then some posters come after the players or me.

Regarding Carroll playing the LG, it's an interesting question to me. This is a message board. Many things get discussed. I think Carroll, with the 2 extra players, would likely beat the LG. I don't care if the comparison doesn't matter to you; it does to me. Why does making a comparison have anything to do with gain. Your comment on gain makes no sense. In addition, I don't like how some on the board like to bash NAIA, as if all NAIA players are weak compared to D1. That's not true. There are some very good NAIA teams and very good players.

I'm not particularly passionate about the players who left. What are you talking about? I just check on them from time to time. Someone else brought up Murphy, and then I researched her. Why can't you recognize that she's a starter on a better team than the LG. Do you really think she couldn't have helped the LG?

I don't like the coach for what he did initially, and for some things I've heard about him. I also laugh at how many posters constantly cheerlead about him. Fewer now, than when he was hired. His first 2 years have shown little improvement. He hasn't won a conference game. What's your explanation or excuse? I thought he was supposed to come in and make immediate magic. His first year recruiting of new players was somewhere between weak and terrible. I am not trying to be vindicated about anything. Nothing I post on this subject has anything to do with vindication. It seems to me that people like you can't handle general questioning and the truth. I'm not the only asking these questions, by the way.

I don't care about Carroll. I couldn't name any player on the Carroll team other than the 3 former LG. I look up their stats on occasion, and sometimes hear something about them. I look up Western more often, because I like to follow the 2 Native American sisters who start for them. I follow Koala Bad Bear too, as well as Raequan Battle.

I don't have a grudge. I just don't like what the coach did initially. Never will. Have no respect for him.

I'm not stuck in the past, and posting on occasion what former LG are doing is not a grudge. And by pointing out how unsuccessful the coach has been so far is mostly an observation. I thought he'd be better. He still has time. Maybe this will be the year he finally gets his team somewhere. Why can't you recognize how little he's done so far? Also, I have never seen any catch blame himself more for bad play and losses.

My voice will be what it is. If you don't like my voice, put me on mute.

I don't follow the LG anymore. Used to have 4 front row seats. Followed them fairly closely. I lost interest for various reasons. If the coach moves on, maybe I will regain interest. I did donate to the new locker room recently, tho. Because the LG will use it, but not the male coach can't.

I don't piss on the present. I just point out how little the coach has produced so far. Are you satisfied with no conference tourney wins? Little recruiting by him for top players (so far). Next season, only 2 current starters will return. Only one of them was recruited by the new coach. Unless the bench is loaded now, that shows pretty pathetic recruiting.

Why don't you get some of the coach cheerleaders together and see if you can help the LG get some conference tournament wins. Also, I wonder if any of you and your cheerleader friends have donated more to Griz athletics and the women's locker room than I have.
