Who could the griz even get as a new coach?

That's a huge question at hand....we didn't have mind blowing candidates the last search and I wouldn't expect any mind blowing, proven coaches this go round either. It's probably wishful thinking to think any FBS coordinators would drop their 500k salaries for a 200k salary unless they desperate want to be a head coach. So then what candidates are left? I think many just assume coaches are chomping at the bit to coach here and I don't think that's the case. I'm not thrilled with the results of this staff, but I also see the potential in their youth and what they are HOPING to build. Not sure if they will get there. Also not sure a change won't just set us back another 3 years which really would be the dagger IMO. Therein lies the problem.

I think at this point I'd be okay with Stitt at the helm but some key changes to DC and special teams. I think that's a fair and smart compromise
Or you take a chance on a sub-coordinator FBS candidate like we did with BH and like MSU did with Choate. It provides a short cut for them vs. being buried among layers of candidates to move up in FBS.

Youth? Stitt is 53.

This is just what I was about to post. We are likely in a position of having to take a chance on a young coach with little or no head coaching experience.

Most established head coaches will either not have the dominant winning resume that UM will want, or they will have the resume, but will be looking for higher profile head coaching jobs.

I'm actually ok with the concept of taking a chance on a young upcoming coach, a la Bobby Hauck in 2003...If we are looking for a new coach. I think its probably the direction we should have gone after Mick's tenure.

And there is no one on the current staff who is ready to be HC.

Chad Germer has enough experience to be a D-1 head coach now. He has been here under many different coaches, moved on with the successful ones and has come back to Coach the Griz. O-Line is improving under his instruction. He has seen and coached numerous offenses. Has great ties to many Griz football alumni.

:thumb: He knows and was part of the program that was dominant and feared by the rest of the conference.

Why do people who obviously haven't talked to Hauck or his friends, keep posting that Hauck would never come back to Montana? Jeez, get some good info before stuff like that is posted.

Would Haslam hire him is another question? Note that Engstrom and many other senior administrators at UM are gone. Note that Haslam has a lot of important boosters who are going to have more say this time. I don't think Haslam will be able to make the decision by himself, if he is ever faced with the decision. There is a new president coming. I would guess that some big donors and people are already weighing in with Bodnar. They may have more influence than Haslam ends up with.

Hauck could have gone to the NFL as a ST coordinator when he left UM.

Haslam was pressured to hire Stitt, that comes from a member of the "make belief search committee"
and Bobby Hauck would come back in a Stitt offensive minute.

It is going to be a tough year for athletics at the UM the budget is exhausted, for that matter, the state is in dire straights, no help in sight, not to say anything about attendance for the last three home games.

Something positive has to come out of the coach Stitt situation, either a complete change or tragic changes in the current staff.

Just my humble opinion

If they keep Stitt we are GUARANTEED to be mediocre! At least a new guy gives us new hope.

That is your belief. Guarantee is an absolute word that you are unable to use in situations like this. I respect your belief, but not your choice of verbs.

Getting a new HC would not be nearly as difficult as many of you think. Get a mid level FBS asst. like we did with Hauck and the Cats did with Choate--not bad choices it appears to me. They will not stay forever if they are any good but that is part of being a decent FCS school. Our facilities are top notch, Missoula is a great place to live and both would be big pluses. And we also need to quit saying it would take years to get back to anything decent. Look at UGA as I posted elsewhere yesterday, one year with a new HC and they are contenders for national champs. Then look at Miami, they are one year into the regime of the fired UGA HC and look where they are. So don't say it can't be done. Final thought--Kennesaw State (close to where I live) is in their 3rd year of FCS going 10-1 including a win against the Cats and for their at home conference clinching game they had the grand total of 4000 in the stands. Granted their conference may not be at the level of the BSC but they have done rather well in a short period of time starting from scratch and their HC was a GA Tech assistant who had never been a HC. Go GRIZ and let's make the Griz great again--no need to settle for the mediocrity of the past several years

Jonathan Smith. I know that’s wishful thinking/dreaming.

Oregon State: Kerry Eggers of the Portland Tribune notes that he believes “at least” three candidates have been interviewed for the open head coaching job, and they are interim head coach Cory Hall, Cal offensive coordinator and former Eastern Washington head coach Beau Baldwin, and Washington offensive coordinator Jonathan Smith.

I'm not sure we can pull down a P5 coordinator. Might be a bit of a reach. Could be worth a shot though. Not exactly sure of the official pecking order though.

Keep wondering this myself, meanwhile people I know that actually know and talk to the man say he would love to come back and correct me if I’m wrong did he not give an interview last summer saying he’d love to “get the band back together”?

Give Chad Germer the nod. He is already there. He understands the expectations of Griz Nation. He has been to the FBS with some success and came back proving loyalty to his home state of MONTANA. He is a great Oline coach and understands the importance of recruiting MT kids. I dont see why he couldnt run this talented team as long as he has been coaching (20years) He has the connections in the D1 and FBS which could help with recruiting both players and coaches. His kids are still in school so pretty doubtful he would be leaving anytime soon. If Stitt and Semore get shown the door at least the team isnt starting over completely. Germer understands football.

No, this is the article where a few posters say he was hinting towards wanting the job again. But he defintiely doesn't say that.
