It's probably wishful thinking to think any FBS coordinators would drop their 500k salaries for a 200k salary unless they desperate want to be a head coach. So then what candidates are left? I think many just assume coaches are chomping at the bit to coach here and I don't think that's the case. I'm not thrilled with the results of this staff, but I also see the potential in their youth and what they are HOPING to build. Not sure if they will get there. Also not sure a change won't just set us back another 3 years which really would be the dagger IMO. Therein lies the problem.
I think at this point I'd be okay with Stitt at the helm but some key changes to DC and special teams. I think that's a fair and smart compromise
You skipped over the BH example, but since you wanted to dwell on Choate, he just beat the pants off your boy Stitt two years in a row. And Montana ought to be better able to hire such a candidate than MSU. Stitt has never shown he can win big games, his approach is not built for consistent wins. Not built for sustaining offensive drives. Not built for excellence in defense or special teams. So no, it is not obvious that a coaching change now sets the program back; it's already hovering in that position.Grizzlies1982 said:kemajic said:Or you take a chance on a sub-coordinator FBS candidate like we did with BH and like MSU did with Choate. Not sure I'm following you Kem. Almost all your posts suggest Montana football has fallen off a cliff and/or Stitt should have been canned weeks ago. Then you use Choate as an example of a plausible new coach. I get that he was attainable as a low level Pac12 assistant coach.
Though I suspect Choate's results is also a good example of what we would get. I think he has his team pointed in a better direction. However in two years he has exactly two 'quality' wins (since beating the Griz is his only accomplishment). Fact is he has put together back to back losing seasons in his two years. With luck maybe in his third year he can hit 7-4 to match this year's Grizzlies record.
I'm sad as hell about Montana's lack of greater success. Yet I believe Stitt also has Montana pointed in a better direction. The foundation of the current mediocracy came from the Pflu fiasco followed by the Delaney baby sitting years. Making a coaching change today is most likely to set the program back rather than guarantee improving on the last few years. I know you won't agree but I think it is rather obvious.

And whereas, the prediction is that booster dollars are going to stop flowing, fans are going to stop attending, and Division 1 caliber recruits will not want to play here;
And whereas, due to the abysmal outlook of Montana Grizzlies football, not one even remotely qualified human being would be interested in extinguishing this dumpster fire of a program;
Now let it be resolved, that there are exactly 0 qualified candidates that could possibly be interested in coaching the Griz.
It's all over. Dismantle the whole thing.

Right on...a new coach is going to have to bring in a new game and that means a couple years of not so good results. It is rare for a new coach to succeed immediately. It happens but not as much as people think. And, most places, i.e. JMU, NDSU, pay a lot more than UM does. So, unless a guy loves the scenery I doubt UM will be the goal of an ambitious and successful coach.

How does msu's salary compare to UM? How did they get a guy with ambition? I think we can get a good coach.
