Vernon Adams picks Oregon

BDizzle said:
Watched Around the Horn today and they talked about Adams transferring. They went off on Baldwin and the school. Praised Adams for giving 4 years to the school and then doing what was best for him. Ridiculed Baldwin for not letting him practice with the team and acting like a spoiled brat who didn't get his way. I have to agree with them. Adams isn't getting paid. He fulfilled his obligation to the school and is now moving on to help his future.

Let me get this straight. You think coach B ought to let Adams hang out, practice with the Eagles, and use the facilities when they are playing each other in the first week?!?!

If JJ decided prior to last year he was transferring to the bizzzon or MSU, you'd be all for him hanging out and using Montana resources and practice with grizz players? That's moronic, even for egrizz standards.

And by the way, I'm happy for VA. Just bummed it turned out the way it did, as would anyone. Guy is a hell of a player.

Actually its your analogy thats moronic. Comparing cat Griz rivalry to ewoo Ducks is just plain stupid. ewoo is not even remotely comparable to the Ducks so just stop the butt hurt crap. I actually think if Baldwin had played his hand differently he could have had a great story to sell recruits, now, not so much. VA can flat out play the game and its going to be great seeing someone from the BSC showing the big boys.

Im going to have to agree with this guy. Eastern doesn't owe VA anything. There are plenty of others place for him to train..

Okay insert any opponent. It doesn't matter who it is. Vernon quit the team. Any other person who quits the team isnt allowed to use team facilities or be around team activities.

No other coach would do what you are proposing.

Coaches leave all the time for other schools. Kind of hypocritical .

And if Oregon had been offering Baldwin the head coaching job you can bet your bottom dollar he would have been gone in a heartbeat.

All kinds of people say dumb stuff all the time, but coaches should know better than to air their frustrations to a reporter for cripes sake.

Thats not what I said. VA fulfilled his end of the deal. He got a scholie, completed his degree and gave ewoo four years of game. I'm not in the camp that says he quit. However, like I said, Baldwin did not play is hand very well. He should have said VA can't be around the team or use the facilities. Period. Nothing more, nothing less. No explanation necessary and none should have been offered. Coaches should know better than whining in public, it never ends well for the coach.

I posted this from the RED ZONE on the Ash thread. Its probably more relevant here . . . for what it's worth.

Baldwin appears to have backtracked his statements somewhat on Portland radio today. Not sure what that means regarding Adams' use of team facilities (he still seemed firm on the 'opposing quarterback training with us' narrative), but he is clearly in damage control mode.

It's not rocket science. He (VA) is the potential starting QB for your first opponent of the year. There's no WAY that guy gets within 100 yards of my facilities--ever again.

Thats true, no way he gets near the door. But the coach never ever says anything in public. It never looks good.

Good article.

And look! We (eGriz) made SI!

At Eastern Adams flip-flopped between cockiness and doubt. He maintains a cool demeanor and has a knack for talking trash: Two years ago before the Eagles took on Montana, an FCS power and the team’s biggest rival, Adams used emojis to create a picture of a Grizzly bear getting shot, and posted it on Twitter. He deleted it after being verbally attacked online, and says with a laugh, “Oh my goodness they were mad, but come on, it’s Griz week! We don’t like each other. And you know what, if I played for them they would freakin’ love me for stuff like that.”

I'm glad he still thinks his death threats were funny.

I like this comment posted on the article: "Too small and too much of a thug. Anyone with shaved lines in his eyebrows has issues."  :thumb:

Exactly. VA doesn't owe EWU anything, and EWU doesn't owe VA. I'm still trying to figure out why some people are taking issue with Baldwin not letting VA around the team or football facilities. Obviously, we play Oregon in week 1, but that's not really the issue. The issue is that allowing VA to participate in football related functions would be a massive distraction for the rest of the team. There's also potential liability issues that could arise if he were to get hurt since he's no longer part of the football program. There's a fairly new multi-million dollar Rec Center that Vernon can use to keep fit in the off season, just like any other student.

For the Griz fans being critical of Baldwin, if it were your program, how do you think the situation would have been handled?

Baldwin absolutely made the correct call in this situation and 99.9% of college coaches in America would do the same (and do). This is really a non-issue, IMO.

I agree completely.

Where Baldwin erred was making such a proclamation public, and the whiny way in which he did so. He could have simply told VA privately he wasn't able to use the facilities and work out with the team. He didn't need to shout that to the press.

The around the horn people talked down Baldwin because it is the easy thing to do. They would much rather talk about Oregon. It is easy to slam the little guy in Cheney. VA is no longer with the team. Thanks for your time, but Baldwin coaches EWU, not Oregon. No way I am letting VA into my workouts and practices, much less my office. It is a business.

I am in complete agreement, I've been harping on this same point. Keep your pie hole shut, smile at the camera and move on FFS!

Yeah, I don't disagree. He probably shouldn't have gone into all the details...but if thats the worst thing Baldwin has done in this whole situation, he's got a pass from me.

Stumbled on a fairly interesting article on this subject.
