UM Athletics Operated in Red Last Year

Picked up some notable fund raising numbers this week out of MSU which just completed an eight year funding campaign...(maybe somebody'll produce comparable numbers for UM during the same period)
Their "What It Takes" campaign raised a total of $ 413 million dollars including $15,046,206 million for athletics - 502% of their goal. As a footnote their enrollment increased from 13,559 to 16,902 for Fall 2018 during that period.

For those who may or may not remember, dethroned UM President Royce Engstrom had a one year head start on MSU's new president, Waded Cruzado who was hired away from New Mexico State in October 2009. In the nearly six years Engstrom ran UM enrollment fell from 15,642 (MSU had 13,599 then) to 12,412 when he was terminated in December 2016. Enrollment remains in free fall (though some campus wags say retention is up) standing at more than 30 % since the early days of the Engstrom era.

Why bring up the uncomfortable facts?.. Because some folks may need a reminder that restoring health to UM's various departments - including athletics - will be a long and arduous job. Here's hoping current president Bodnar doesn't burnout before the job is done. :coffee:

It's good to think outside the box and look for revenue sources, but it also says something when you're advocating beer sales for UM while posting numbers like the above from MSU. Why has MSU succeeded ? Waded is a powerhouse. MSU offers degrees that give grads jobs. Bozeman's quality of life and access to outdoor recreation is hard to beat. Bozeman ranks in the top 5 (#1 this year) for its economy as a micropolitan city (Missoula is at #75). The sun shines in Bozeman in the winter. Yellowstone Park. 2 ski areas. Yellowstone. Madison, Gallatin, Yellowstone rivers. Great restaurants. A vibrant downtown. The largest airport in MT. It's an easy choice for most students comparing these MT universities to land in Bozeman.

I agree with some of what you said, but also have a different view. As has been discussed at length before, I do believe UM also offers degrees that give grads a job. Missoula and UM are very intertwined and success at UM also helps Missoula. I think it's a toss-up for what city has better quality of life. Missoula has plenty of outdoor activities just out the door as does Bozeman. Missoula also has a thriving downtown, art, music, and culinary scenes. I think a lot of it comes down to how the students and their parents feel about a place. Both cities have plenty to offer. Now where we see a real difference is in the energy, money, and time spent by the two different universities recruiting students. THAT is where we need to see substantial improvement by UM.

That's probably the most important aspect, actively recruiting students. You can't change the rest....

I don't what Waded is, must be a local thing, like Moose Jaw or Eyebrow. Micropolitan isn't a word. The sun shines here all winter and it sucks balls (haven't had a day above -14 C all February, no idea what that is in Merican). You mention Yellowstone as 3 of your top 7 attractions, which is weird. The largest airport in Montana is like claiming to be the best hockey player in Ecuador. And your quote about Mark Twain and censorship is bullshit, there is absolutely no evidence he ever said that.

It's cold in Bozeman, too - colder than Missoula.
