UM Athletics Operated in Red Last Year

I worry about generational differences and the longevity of traditional sports. Basketball has dropped off and millennials are used to streaming games on their phones, Apple TV, etc. Not sure how much they are willing or able to spend on college games. Sports are not the past times or main focus that they once were. I believe tech and other alternatives for kids will continue to have an impact on participation and interest in sports.

Even if this isn’t the main issue here, 10 to 15 to 20 years down the road, it will most certainly be.

With the addition of E sports there is a worrying trend for the days of traditional sports. I know of a young man involved in E sports, lot of money at play!!

Generate revenue streaming games you say???? What a novel fucking concept!

Not saying that the AD currently has sustainable operations as is or that they don't need to make changes to replenish liquidity and cash flow, but it seems like a lot of the expenditures referenced as drivers for increased OPEX are one time expenditures. Many of which are tied to the Champions Center. Would help if they could obtain a donation to pay off debt. Operating deficit probably isn't as dire as presented on the surface.

The Griz definitely need a deep home playoff run, which would help? What about eliminating both a men and women's athletic team, like golf, tennis or cross country?

I believe that UM currently offers the minimum men's sports (6) to remain a NCAA Division 1 program and even though the (9) womens programs exceed the minimum by 1, they are necessary to meet Title IX scholarships.

This is correct. I also imagine cross country is the lowest cost sport given most if not all those scholarship athletes are also on the track team.

I'm shocked you would suggest that the home town newspaper, the Missoulian, would present a 'dire' report on the financial op...…..oh, yeah, its the missoulian……..

The problem with the article is that it didn't put into perspective the fact that football is a cash cow and without football the deficit would be far greater. As such, many will jump to the conclusion that football is a cause of the deficit.

i don't think there's anything nefarious in the reporting. bottom line is that the athletic department operated at a deficit last year, rainy day fund is almost gone, university still owes $5 million on the champions center, and increased costs to run the champions center.

Each athlete should pay their own way, the stadium should be run as a for-profit entity, and tuition should cover the total cost of the U of M. Anything less is socialism and is nothing more than a government hand out. What's next? Universal health care and farm subsidies? Next you leftist snowflakes will be telling me the military should be government funded instead of existing off the profits they make from winning wars.

Build that wall! The Northern Wall. Perhaps a ready made moat to be filled with all the Saskatchewan Sarcasm dripping from the great white north. :thumb:

From what I have read in the past, Griz Football and Basketball have been used as a cash cow for the University.

Last time I checked about the financial reporting it was only football that was in the black. The football profits covered the shortfall of every other program, including men's hoops.

Yep - found it: https://mus.edu/data/Athletics/2017/2017-MUS-Summary-Income-Statement-UM-Missoula.htm

Profit / loss by program:

Football: $2.6 mil gain
MBB: $278,000 loss
WBB: $846,000 loss
MTennis: $220,000 loss
WTennis: $241,000 loss
Men's Track/XC: $379,000 loss
Women's Track/XC: $503,000 loss
Softball: $595,000 loss
Golf: $115,000 loss
Soccer: $589,000 loss
Volleyball: $397,000 loss

Generally all "other" sports lost just over $3,000,000. That's more than what football made, and before you even add in the other $1,000,000 lost between the two basketball programs.

One good point another poster did make was that this was during Stitt's last season as the FY is July 1, 2017 - June 30, 2018. So hopefully some modest gains and some cuts halfway thru this year will help.

Thank you Brint. Facts is facts. I must preface this post with the fact that I am a one sport guy, football.
Football made a $2.6M profit. Why should the football cash cow team be expected to make up for programs that should have to suck it up on their own? I would expect that somewhere in the archives, that there is an accounting for the money received, and expenses incurred from the UW and other such money games. Why hasn't that been brought to light? Same for OOC games in WGS. The figures are out there, what are they?

Because you would football as the only sport at the u.

Basketball tickets are $7 for general admission.....ridiculous! Increase to $10 and corresponding increases for reserved seating.

I like the alcohol idea, and when pot is legalized, oh, never mind, bad idea.

Let's get FatBruno to run the athletic department. He is for sure to get it all in the black. He is the smartest poster EGriz has and probably in the USA. He is boiling over with ideas on how to make everything in this world better, (I haven't seen any of them myself) but just ask him.

$7 is the least amount they charge for weakest opponents on the schedule. They up the general admission cost to $11/$12 for higher stakes games like MSU, etc. Although it is getting far better (thanks to Decuire, Tinkle, and Larry K,) basketball has a hard enough time generating interest to sustain $10/ticket in General Admission to watch Montana Tech or Sacramento state......ISU.........NAU.......SUU. If anything, reduce price in the upper level reserved seats. IMO Those aren't worth what you pay for. I would rather slum it up in GA :thumb: :D

I don't see too many home game sold out. Lots of empty seats...$5 a ticket is better than an empty seat. Sell them a beer for $7 and you have a happy customer.
