Tres Tinkle

Different types of HS players.

Huestis was mostly a post with up to 15 foot jumper in HS. He was quick but rarely handled the ball, good position rebounder and interior defender.

Tres is a slasher in HS. Plays more outside on defense, often covered (and effectively) the opposing point guard and top of key in trapping half court defense. He drives from wing and shoots both mid-range and 3 well. Rebounding numbers are very good but he probably relies on athleticism more than strong fundamentals for his boards.

From what I saw of Huestis in college (not that much) he developed more of Tres' slashing game and better exterior defense. But that never really became his game. Good offensive and defensive rebounder, effective scorer up to 15 feet but not a slashing driver nor 3 point shooter.

Tres certainly has room for improvement in many parts of his game. I think his offensive skills are superior to Huestis' in HS. He will work hard to continue to get stronger and become a more fundamentally sound interior player both offensively and defensively.

i think tres still has a growth spurt in him. that would be a game-changer.

not mentioned here i think is that heustis is now the all-time leading shot-blocker at stanford.

oh, one other issue. the women have had great success over the years with native american players; the men, less so. sounds like this randall guardipee out of box elder is pretty (weasel) good. okay, maybe not that good. but a legitimate d-1 prospect?

1. Yes, Tinkle waited for the game to come to him, scoring 24 of his team's 47 points in the championship game this year, and 17 in the second half. "The junior Tinkle, the highest recruited player in the state, scored 17 of his 24 points after halftime to keep the Knights in the contest."

2. In 2013, "Tinkle averaged a hair under 20 points per game (19.9) to go with 8.3 rebounds per game and a .567 shooting percentage." In 2013, he almost single handedly won both the championship and semifinal games.

3. "Schools from all over the western United States have expressed varying degrees of interest. Tinkle listed Arizona State, Boise State, Cal, Colorado, Gonzaga, Montana, Oregon State, Pepperdine, Portland and Stanford, as well as Boston College, Harvard and Rice as colleges to talk with him." Offers from BC, Utah, USC and probably more.

3. Tinkle was Gatorade Player of the Year, again.

" TRES TINKLE, a 6-6 senior-to-be forward from Missoula Hellgate who was named the 2013-14 Gatorade Montana boys’ basketball Player of the Year, is the lone Super-State repeater. He averaged 21.1 points per game – third best in the AA – for the Knights this past season. Hellgate lost to Helena Capital High in the Class AA State Championship in Billings, where Tinkle averaged a tournament-best 23.3 a game. Tinkle, who also averaged 7.3 rebounds and is getting looks from some major Division I programs, looked like a college player competing in high school gyms across the state during his junior campaign, displaying a skillset and frame that is leaps and bounds more refined than anybody else in the state."

Still can't forgive him though for dumping Big Sky in the MIDDLE of the season for Hellgate.
That shows a lack of class that can't be made up by physical gifts.

Missoula school system allows transfers like this. It's not that common but Tres' case certainly not isolated. Does every kid who makes a decision like this show "no class"?

His sisters went to Big Sky and Tres started there. Dad works at UM (duh!)and Mom parttime at Hellgate, family lives way out Mullan Road area.....Hellgate probably as close and as fast to get to as Big Sky. Convenience for both parents relative to transport, ability to see son's games when possible and see him before/during/after school.

Hellgate was by no means a stacked team when Tres made the transfer but had a well-respected coach during same time Big Sky was in transition. He made the call, within the school district's rules, for reasons both personal/family and sports/basketball.

Big Sky High lives on without Tres Tinkle and Hellgate lives on with him as a basketball player and high school student. That's really all the kid is and seems many forget this. Lack of class is not a question here.

How can anyone call out a teenager for lack of class other than someone who lack's class?
As for Tres and the Tinkle family, they are very much a family who live by values, and strong moral fibers. You will be hard pressed to find anyone who has met any of them to find any negatives about the Tinkle's. As for Tres transferring schools, I cannot fault any kid or family wanting to play for a great HS coach.

This reminds me of Missoula Little League All Stars, so much is attempted to be done to make sure Missoula Southside and Sentinel have the strongest teams possible, yet Mount Jumbo East has to fight hard for everything they get, or better yet earn. Granted, I met many great kids and families from all over Missoula, but the vocal minority from those areas make Little League more difficult for LL officials who take the time for these kids.

Just because an area has more financial resources and or is newer does not mean that area and families of that area are allowed more benefits in athletics, or life for that matter. It is amazing when Sentinel or Big Sky are the Top Dog in football or basketball all is right in the city. Yet when an under dog Hellgate is top dog the kids and coaches are ridiculed by a few too many. Why not just give Hellgate credit for making an excellent choice in the hire of their basketball coach? That is exactly what Hellgate did, and that is why the better players in the area want to attend Hellgate. Hellgate has a coach who will improve and foster a player much more than any other coach in the Missoula area.

With that said, for anyone who does not know Tres or the Tinkle family, take the damn time to get know them, you too will know without doubt how much "Class" this family has.

Basketball kids often transfer in the middle of the season, because that's when the semester break occurs. One needs a full semester at the new school to be eligible for varsity basketball, in situations like this. For basketball, one needs to transfer in the middle of the season to be eligible for basketball at the start of the season the next fall. I believe 2 other kids transferred to Hellgate at the same time Tinkle did. The other big starting Hellgate post lives 1 block from Sentinel; his brother played hoops for Sentinel. This kid went to Hellgate as a frosh.

Tres Tinkle is A CLASS ACT, and any1 who says otherwise has an agenda. HOWEVER, Mousegriz, I can 100 percent ASSURE YOU, he didn't transfer to Hellgate for transportation and convenience reasons. That's just plain rediculous. The kid has never hidden from why he made the move, so if you want to know, just ask him. Don't make stuff up.

Tinkle will be the best player to ever come out of Montana.

I think you might want to hold off on that assessment for awhile there Slick. A guy by the name of Larry Kryskowiak (sp) was a 3-time BSC MVP, and a starter for the Milwaukee Bucks before his career was derailed by injuries. I'll bet you right now, as much as you can afford to lose, that Tinkle never plays a single minute in the NBA. He's a very good player, and I don't intend to denigrate his abilities, but he's not gonna be as good as Krysko.

Havgrizfan - Have you ever seen Tres and Lisa walking into Hellgate at 7:30AM together? Ever seen Wayne show up for a game just before tipoff after UM practice 3 blocks away? Ever seen Wayne watch the first quarter or half of Hellgate game and head to UM to coach the Griz later than same night? Don't think any of these three things would have happened if Tres were at Big Sky this year.. I saw all three this basketball season.

Did he transfer to Hellgate for transportation and convenience reasons? No. Did these things happen at Hellgate much easier than if at Big Sky? Yes.

I know the family pretty well. Transportation had nothing to do with it. Coaching did.

Some would argue that Wayne Estes is the greatest player to ever come out of Montana. Sadly tragedy prevented him from proving it. The Lakers have stated they planned on taking him in the first round after he finished school at Utah State. Whom did they draft with that overall 3rd pick instead? Some guy named Gail Goodrich....and they believed Estes upside was greater! Only Rick Barry outscored him his senior year.

I would one of them. Larry was good, very very good but I believe Estes' potential was much higher.

Tinkle is blowin up at the Earl Watson Camp. Joel Francisco said he may have been the most college ready player in camp. He also interviewed him later. Another guy said he was a top 40 player nationally and was ready to blow up this spring. Great to hear, until he commits elsewhere i will just dream about him and his dad teaming up Dougy Buckets style!

Here is a great article. Too bad it is not from a Missoula publication. Indeed, Tres is making some waves and a name for himself. http://billingsgazette.com/sports/high-school/blogs/gazprepsports/basketball/boys/hellgate-s-tinkle-already-making-noise-on-summer-hoops-circuit/article_5e5509ff-79a9-5756-8d85-f3fd4724d4c9.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
