Tres Tinkle

Thanks. I think there was a MSU player more recent than Domako or Kilborn who was from Glyndon, MN or somewhere in that neck of the woods, but I can't recall his name.

I watched Domako many times. One of the best pure shooters ever. Right up there with Gary Kane. :)

I bet you're thinking of Nate Holmstadt, who played for MSU from 1995-1999, and had an outstanding career. I'm pretty sure he was from Minnesota, although not sure what specific town. Holmstadt and Danny Sprinkle were freshman on MSU's last BSC title team, in 1995-96. Sprinkle started, and Holmstadt was the 6th man. Those were the "good old days"...when MSU basketball was actually relevant. It's ridiculous that it's been almost 20 years since our last conference title. After Holmstadt and Sprinkle finished their careers in 1999, the wheels started falling off, and things have gradually been going downhill ever since.
Why would anyone here care? This is about UM...

I kind of enjoy it when cat fans bemoan their station in life...

You won't find many Bobcat fans who would be willing to even try to defend the state of our MBB program these days. And to think, MSU and UM fans both believed that we were getting the better of the two coaches, at the time Huse and Tinkle were hired back in 2006. It just goes to show how wrong you can be.

I do think it's a shame that both schools have so few Montana kids on their rosters anymore. MSU only has two, and neither sees much playing time, although Robison might develop into a decent player eventually. Does UM have any in-state kids, other than Bradshaw?

The roster lists 3. You are so right about the Huse and Tinkle hire.

Oregon State already " humming" about Father/Son prize.

I can see this happening. It would surely be a fit I can see Wayne looking for as well. :thumb:

I wonder if Tinkle would even want to play for his dad. I say he goes to Stanford.

How could he go wrong going to Stanford ? Good program, incredible educational opportunity and he's not going to the NBA.

So is the bloom off the rose with Robinson already? I'm asking, haven't followed what's going on with that program. Unless you are looking to get a degree in forestry engineering, Stanford is a no brainer.

The truly GREAT thing about Stanford is that it is a lifetime commitment and it is truly both ways..student-Stanford, Stanford-student. But, it is not easy sledding for an undergrad.

Do you think he has the talent to play at Stanford? How does he measure up to Huestus in high school? Never saw Huetus play in high school.

I think he's better now than Huestis was as a senior in high school, but I would to people who have seen them play more. Tinkle has scholarship offers from schools as good as Stanford.

I think Huestis was more consistent, but smaller. However, Tres has a huge upside.

He may be in trouble if they start calling travelling again in the near future though..... ;)

Traveling, you say? I do believe the modern pronunciations are euro step and pro hop.

From an old Gazette article:

Great Falls C.M. Russell standout Josh Huestis has repeated as Gatorade Montana boys basketball player of the year.

Huestis, a 6-foot-8 senior, led the Rustlers to a second straight Class AA championship this season, averaging 17.3 points, 12.8 rebounds, 4.8 blocks, 1.4 steals and 1.3 assists per game. CMR dominated Billings West 71-41 in the title game and Huestis was named MVP of the state tournament.

Huestis, who has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Stanford, maintains a 3.93 GPA. He also serves in two student-leadership programs at school, he has volunteered on behalf of his church, at an assisted living facility, as co-chairman of the Montana Teens March Against Meth, as well as for the Special Olympics and the area Catholic Youth Organization.

It looks like he has disqualified himself from ever making the Commencement address at MT Tech...

I have only seen Tinkle play once, in the AA state championship this year, I went to see what all the fuss was about. I left wondering what all the fuss was about. He has size and obviously knows the game but he sure left a lot to be desired from all the hype on here in locally in the papers.

Between him and Huestis there is no comparison, Huestis at this point in HS was a much better all around player. JH dominated and lead his team, Tinkle is still waiting for the AA championship game to come to him............

Likely some 'name' schools look at his potential upside....if he goes outside of grizzly land he goes redshirt

He is a gifted athlete, but where he goes to refine skills is still open IMHO.

1. Yes, Tinkle waited for the game to come to him, scoring 24 of his team's 47 points in the championship game this year, and 17 in the second half. "The junior Tinkle, the highest recruited player in the state, scored 17 of his 24 points after halftime to keep the Knights in the contest."

2. In 2013, "Tinkle averaged a hair under 20 points per game (19.9) to go with 8.3 rebounds per game and a .567 shooting percentage." In 2013, he almost single handedly won both the championship and semifinal games.

3. "Schools from all over the western United States have expressed varying degrees of interest. Tinkle listed Arizona State, Boise State, Cal, Colorado, Gonzaga, Montana, Oregon State, Pepperdine, Portland and Stanford, as well as Boston College, Harvard and Rice as colleges to talk with him." Offers from BC, Utah, USC and probably more.

3. Tinkle was Gatorade Player of the Year, again.

" TRES TINKLE, a 6-6 senior-to-be forward from Missoula Hellgate who was named the 2013-14 Gatorade Montana boys’ basketball Player of the Year, is the lone Super-State repeater. He averaged 21.1 points per game – third best in the AA – for the Knights this past season. Hellgate lost to Helena Capital High in the Class AA State Championship in Billings, where Tinkle averaged a tournament-best 23.3 a game. Tinkle, who also averaged 7.3 rebounds and is getting looks from some major Division I programs, looked like a college player competing in high school gyms across the state during his junior campaign, displaying a skillset and frame that is leaps and bounds more refined than anybody else in the state."

Wow, even PlaYaRapE agrees with me, great players take over games and other stand by and watch great players take over games.

I don't know man. Tinkle is all ready ranked 124the nationally by rivals and very well may move up after another good AAU season. Huestis was never a top 150 player. Different kind of player right now, Huestis relied much more on size and athleticism, Tinkle is much more skilled offensively. There's also the projection him growing to upwards of 6 11 that make him even more intriguing. Huestis may have been more dominant at the same stage but I think Tinkle has more long-term upside.
