The Summit League will be calling

[Sound of telephone ring.]

Big Sky Conference: Hello?
Summit Conference: Hello, Big Sky Conference? This the Summit calling.
Big Sky Conference: Wait, like a mountain "summit?"
Summit Conference: No, the athletic conference.
Big Sky Conference: Okay...
Summit Conference: There is an opportunity to reorganize both of our conferences and get Augustana involved. Are you interested?
Big Sky Conference: Are you out of your mind?
Summit Conference: Wait, hear me out. Let me tell you all the advan...
Big Sky Conference: Ch-ch-ch-ch-k-k-k-k-h...we're breaking up, some kind of bad connection...
Summit Conference: Hello?

[Sound of dial tone.]

Unfortunately, the truth is not YOUR strong point, UND. 60 miles? Rigby? Soda? Malad? Rupert? Burley? To put this into perspective(60 miles), you could claim to live in the Missoula area if you lived in Hamilton, Superior, Polson, Drummond, or outside of Lincoln. You seem to be stretching the truth a bit. Verdict: I don't believe your claim. Winner: Sask.
American Falls, Blackfoot, Idaho Falls, Chubbuck, Ft. Hall Rez….

UND should post his theories on the Bball forum; the Summit is not even on a football map.

The next move for the BSC is to expand and split north/south into two separate conferences of 8 or 9 teams each, which can then schedule each other for OOC games. The current hurdles are to convince NMS to join and to convince the NCAA to provide another playoff autobid. BH has been quoted that he believes this will happen sooner rather than later. It is believed this would reduce travel costs and improve rivalry interest and intensity.

With the CA football only members, this might be a football only split.
BSC: UM, MSU, UI, ISU, EWU, CWU, PSU, Weber
New Conf.: UCD, SacSt, CPSLO, UNC, NAU, NMS, DixieSt, SUU

I like the looks of this - of course I'll believe it if it ever comes to fruition because Big Sky Conference "leadership."
It is the University Presidents that will make the call; it may have already been done. And we finally have a good one.

Out of courtesy. This is so obviously is happening. UND is the glue that makes it stick.

It was agreed to years ago by all parties except those that got left behind ( NAU, Idaho St, N Col, Port St etc).

We should be honored to have the one person that has the real story and the balls enough to post about it. Out of all the schools and thousands of employees, boosters, and reporters, you stand alone.

It is amazing. Who knew a Sioux was controlling everything?

I was just going for the outermost towns about 60 miles from Pokey. Chubbuck is to Pokey as Laurel is to Billings, and about 15,000 pop. Then, the unincorporated rural route areas, and various little towns here and there. Add to that about 10 Billion tons of spuds(just grabbing a figure; could be more). The I-15, I-86 corridor is populated. See, Sask, told you so. I sense you were being sarcastic, though.

THE Big Sky was forced to include UND because the Montanas wanted us badly. NDSU has blocked our then path to the MVFC as NDSU had spread in the media that the MVFC wanted no more than 10. That was an outright lie. NDSU was only interested in taking UND football down a notch by forcing us to the Southland as an affiliate. The Montanas intervened (UND had an offer from the fb-less Summit then) and got us a Big Sky bid.

The Montanas got NDSU to put down the hatchet as they want the Dakotas more than most of the Big Sky. Engstrom or maybe his predecessor Dennison started this and Bodnar is following his directives for the good of Griz Athletics. NDSU wants to go FBS now and all the FBS leagues vomit at the thought. So now NDSU needs UND, the other Dakotas, the Montanas, Idaho, EWU and Weber St to cobble an eventual FBS league together.

Why was UND again included in the upcoming fb schedule when we could have left after this past season with no charge?

A. Because the new Summit football league will have the requisite six teams continuously playing to qualify for an autobid. Also, the new Big Sky has had needed time to recruit more schools - Dixie St and soon CWU. Metro State of Denver is needed because their will be so few schools left. Utah Valley and Seattle will also join it.

The MWC is like a AAA league with some single A teams in it- SJSU. The new FBS league will be the SunBelt of the Northwest. Montana simply can’t afford the MWC but it can a regional new FBS league.

Actually the answer is:

a) Because the football schedules HAD ALREADY BEEN CONSTRUCTED when UND announced they were leaving. It's really not that complicated, Einstein.

So they Big Sky is just too incompetent to rearrange schedules by eliminating one team? That’s the Big Sigh for you.

It’s done all the time, even on short notice, but the Big Sky can’t.

yes, it COULD have been done. But all parties (Big Sky, MVFC) agreed that rescheduling for UND wasn't worth the effort.

You egriz bunch realize that your excuses are sooo lame. Just wanna play Dixie St and CWU for wins to keep Washington-Griz filling up.

Yeah, UND and Augustana are such better options...

You Griz need a basic understanding of NCAA regs.

A conference needs seven schools (eight for FBS), plus must sponsor mbb and in the Summit’s case, baseball and men’s soccer. UND h@ppened to drop baseball and no Dakota has men’s soccer.

Or if it sponsors mbb and football, the needing other men’s team sports go out the window.

Unless the Summit starts football, it will go kaput for its dance bid. Something has to happen and Summit Presidents aren’t panicking because they know they will get more fb teams. The MVC fb teams are off limits because that conference has so many dance credits with Loyola’s run last year and they won’t leave. The Big Sky has zero dance credits over the minimum, so those NW schools will not exactly miss out on a fortune.

Augustana won’t matter, because they NCAA won’t pronounce them DI for at least five years.

The only option is to go West and UND has a ongoing relationship with all the Big Sky schools. The southern BIg Sky hates UND for travel but loves the Montanas because those are nearly the only travel fans, so they can make their own bed with similar schools.

Starting a new conference would mean waiting seven years for an autobid and NCAA money. But helping take over an existing conference is entirely different and no loss of money will result.

Know this is too complicated for your IQs, but maybe you can squeeze your skulls in a vice and get more output.

Shhhhh! The PC police may be about. Not the Sioux anymore, its the Hawks. The Fighting f'n Hawks.

None of the schools that have been mentioned are exciting for Montana to join in a conference affiliation. I would like to see UM in a conference with the likes of Wyoming, Colorado State, Utah State, Utah. Let’s get away from Eastern Washington, Northern Colorado, Idaho State and yes, Montana State if we can get it done.

Those schools have too high budgets that you cant afford. The southern Big Sky has too low so they can’t afford you.

The Summit is just right for budgets. That’s the deciding factor now days.

Maybe not, but it would be much improved over the Big Sky or Summit. As you stated, the conversations have been ongoing for years. Dennison was firm on staying in the Big Sky. I doubt if Engstrom cared.
