The Next Head Coach: the Real Discussion

You could entice a position coach at a major program (out West) with experience to take a cut in pay to be the head coach of a stellar program like the Griz. They make around $200,000 depending on experience. I believe that is what the new Weber coach made and took a cut to be a head coach. They can bring a lot of good coaching ideas with them that the bigger programs use. Plus they have recruiting experience with good athletes.

Dave Dickenson - would he leave the CFL for what I'd presume would be a step down in pay? Probably will be a CFL head coach soon, or at least have an opportunity to be one.

Kraig Paulsen - defensive minded coach, never been an FCS head coach but long time Montana roots. Could retain some current coaches that would fit well with him.

Brent Pease - would leave a higher paying job but would finally get the head coaching gig he's wanted. Wasn't he a finalist when Pflu was hired?

Ty Gregorak - maybe the only internal option, could hold the current group together well, knows the coaches he'd want to keep and others he'd want to replace. Kind of a quick rise to the job though, is he ready?

Mike Breske - probably going to be in the market for a new job once Wazzu's season is over. Is he HC material?

Mike Van Diest - NAIA to FCS is a huge leap. Just a few years ago he almost quit on Carroll (allegedly) due to a lack of passion for the job. We know he can win championships at the NAIA level.

Robin Pflugrad - Snowballs chance in hell?
Maybe try thinking outside the box a little. We dont have to keep hiring former griz people. We need someone who hasnt been with the program before to breathe some fresh life into the program.
Like Kramer, Baldwin, DC of NDSU.

Sort of funny reading this thread, as some that are posting here innocently, know more about who the next coach is. As far as I saw that coach is already lined up.

Incorrect

Nothing incorrect about that. One of those names was already leaked here in another thread, but the "midwesternish" name has not been mentioned.

Myopia rules!.. Once again it's the same old tiresome list of suspects - half of whom have passed on to bigger things never to return and the other half nice guys who wouldn't bring much to the job. I expect Ezo Naranche's or Wild Bill Kelly's name to pop up on egriz any day now. Being deceased shouldn't keep an able candidate out of the discussion... :coffee:

Right idea... AND you're close with the #1 pick. He's not a coach in this conference.

You won't know his answer until after his team is out of the playoffs

It is kind of funny since Wahlberg already knows

MIKE KRAMER.

Dwell on his situation at msu or with the BOR all you want, but he would be excellent at UM. Kramer is a GREAT teacher of the game who understands this state and this program. Plus he's a hell of a good guy Griz nation would embrace.

I think that Hauck and Kramer should be off the list. Hauck left a lot of trouble here that caught up with us and got us where we are now. I was in school at MSU while Kramer was there and he ran a shit show. Rapes murders drugs coaches selling meth... Good character will go far for the long term. We don't want more problems.

The head coach is a hands on CEO of the football team. Business management skills and talents are as important as football knowledge. Whom ever is selected has to be able to successfully handle all the out of sight off field business that most fans do not see. The on field coaching is the glamour part the other what determines the long term success of the program. (Both together). This is why not all great players become successful head coaches. Pressure is high for all coaches to run clean programs now. U of M is an even more high pressure job. DD said a couple of years ago it would be to high stress on his family for him to come back here to coach.

Yeah I know the DC at UNI has not been offered as the prior rumors suggest.

This should get real interesting. I hope we don't rush this too much. Sooner better to help recruiting but we want someone who wants to stay for a while.

Let's finish this season with a few more wins and then make the decision on our next Leader!
The heads already know who their person is going be to take this job! Or who they want to take it....
Thanks Mick!

It would be worth looking at Ron Roberts, head coach at Southeastern Louisiana. He inherited a 3-8 team three years ago, and is now about to wrap up his 2nd consecutive conference title. Last year he took them to the FCS quarterfinals; this all at a school with no history and a smaller athletics budget than any school in the Big Sky Conference. Before SELU, he spent 5 years as the head coach at D-II Delta State, compiling a 47-16 record with four conference championships and a national title game appearance.

No UM connection, but he's from the West Coast, and would be able to recruit Texas as well from his coaching connections there.

I have no idea whether he runs an exciting style of offense.

RobGriz, do you mean 5 pages of dialog is useless? Surely you Jest.....

I could see Engstrom really trying to put a dagger in the system and hiring Joe Glenn back here...hahahha....but lets be optimistic....I think Pease would be a good fit.
