The Next Head Coach: the Real Discussion

Well I guess that takes Van Diest out of the running.

I disagree totally on Van Diest. He would be a great coach, but I doubt he would want to have anything to do with coaching in an Engstrom administration.

Also seriously, do you think egriz messages will have any influence over who that nitwit Engstrom would ever consider and approve as a Griz coach hire? Coaching excellence and winning is not an Engstrom priority.

Wisconsin Whitewater coach Lance Leipold. He has won 5 NC's in 7 years. His record is 100-6. His salary at the D III school is $103,876.00.
He has shown to be good, but how well would the DIII experience translate to FCS?

One never knows yet a 100-6 record shouts that the man can coach.

In general I'd much rather have a consistent known winner from a lower division than a complete unknown from a higher division.

No. I am pretty sure your opinion and my opinion count exactly the same. Not at all. I am just old enough to remember burned bridges........ Pretty sure there are others that do also.

Walk over to the business school. Crank up a "big data" computer. Make a list of qualities--personality, education, experience, winning record, recruiting ties, connection to school/area, respect of peers, and a few dozen others. Start googling every Div. II, III, and NAIA head coach and every FCS head and FBS assistant coach and see how many hits you get. Get serious about looking at the twenty five closest matches. Go after and hire one of the top five. That's a true national search. And, how I found my mother-in-law.

I was about to bump the other thread regarding the search for a new head coach. With that said It will take a huge set of balls or stupidity to name any of our current as head coach. The 2 I like are Green and Suiaunoa. Their experience comes up a little short, even though both have bright coaching futures. I do hope 1 or both are retained by whoever is named head coach.

With that said, I will support the program and give the benefit of any doubt to whoever the new coach will be. I do hope whoever the new coach is will be willing to coach to his personnel and not so set in one strategy. For me, that alone would be a breath of fresh air.

For what it's worth, I agree with you on Legi and Justin. They are both great So. Cal. Recruiters too. Both are not ready to be a HC but they'll be missed.

Sort of funny reading this thread, as some that are posting here innocently, know more about who the next coach is. As far as I saw that coach is already lined up.

And that is? Do tell!

What about someone like Dave Schram? Could the Griz get him?

Too far gone. Probably closer to becoming a head coach in the Mountain West than an FCS head coach.

Mike Van Diest...some of you need to kissing his backside, no way he comes to the Griz.

Same for DD, I think he's in the CFL to stay.

Probably the only internal candidates I could see getting promoted would be Ty Gregorak or Justin Green.

As for out-of-house candidates...how about plucking an assistant from a BSC school or from a Pac-12/Mountain West program?

This is probably incredibly unlikely, and on the rare chance it did happen, he wouldn't stay for long….

Will Muschamp.
