The Next Head Coach: the Real Discussion

Dave Dickenson - would he leave the CFL for what I'd presume would be a step down in pay? Probably will be a CFL head coach soon, or at least have an opportunity to be one. - I actually know some on this...not going to happen.

Kraig Paulsen - defensive minded coach, never been an FCS head coach but long time Montana roots. Could retain some current coaches that would fit well with him. We hated him as a D coordinator...couldn't prove his worth...no.

Brent Pease - would leave a higher paying job but would finally get the head coaching gig he's wanted. Wasn't he a finalist when Pflu was hired?- Possibly...did well under Hal and at Florida...He's at UW...this could be a real consideration.

Ty Gregorak - maybe the only internal option, could hold the current group together well, knows the coaches he'd want to keep and others he'd want to replace. Kind of a quick rise to the job though, is he ready?-Ty has been an okay D coach IMO. Probably the best coach next to Justin. However, he never seems to be consistent defensively...A better Paulsen??

Mike Breske - probably going to be in the market for a new job once Wazzu's season is over. Is he HC material?- Another good one Brint....He was amazing here....that's a tangible coach.

Mike Van Diest - NAIA to FCS is a huge leap. Just a few years ago he almost quit on Carroll (allegedly) due to a lack of passion for the job. We know he can win championships at the NAIA level. No, Nope, Nada...aint going to happen...burn and burned...charred...we're done with this road.

Robin Pflugrad - Snowballs chance in hell?
-I agree...snowballs chance...same coach who the president fired? No way would he come back...

I think he'd come back. Not like he's getting lots of HC offers right now. Bigger issue is there is no way in hell Engstrom would do it. You know how dumb that would make him look? Might as well just scratch him off the list now and until RE moves on.

You guys should try for Paul Wristen at CSU Pueblo.

I kind of like the suggestion. But let's be honest: "try for"?? Please. If Paul saw a 406 area code show up on his office phone he'd be on a flight before the first ring ended.

I mean John Wristen. Yeah, he would take it in a heart beat. That being said I think he will be on several FCS coaching lists and possibly lower FBS lists. I believe he was offered the Western Michigan head coaching job after last season, but turned it down.

I really am liking the suggestion of Marty Morningwheg (sp?). I am sure he has invested wisely during his time in the NFL. He likely would not be looking to jump ship quickly, or at all. The man sure in the hell knows offense, and finding match ups to take advantage of. Too bad he is partnered with a stubborn Ryan with the Jets. The big ? is, what would his price tag be?

I'd also like to see Lex Hillard apply to be an assistant coach here. I have a feeling his playing days are over. I think he would make a solid RB coach, and definitely would instill GRIZ pride into the players. I also hope, no matter what, we keep Justin Green aboard.

When Lex can prove he's more than a little Grizzly coach I will agree with that thought.

Breske has at least two sons coaching, one coordinating offense, the other defense. Would he try to bring them in? If they didn't work out, would he be able to fire them?

Can we hope Super Dave is getting tired of converting loonies and toonies into real money?

Why does everyone assume DD would be a great head coach? Loved the guy as a player, doesn't mean anything else.
I think DD has a pretty good reputation as a CFL coach and I think he'll make an excellent head coach. That being said, I'd really rather not see he him come back as a UM coach. He has a god-like legacy as a player. He brought UM to its first title and will go down in Grizzly lore as one of the greatest ever. Expectations for Super Dave as an HC are almost unattainable. I'd prefer for his legacy to remain as one the greatest athletes ever to wear Grizzly colors. I'm probably in the minority, but that's my $.02 regarding DD as head coach.

I very valid point and I agree.

Wristen grew up in Pueblo...not sure he is even looking to move far from Southern Colorado

Regarding Dave Dickenson, I offer the following:

Bart Starr: He coached the Packers for nine years, the first five as his own general manager. His regular season record was a disappointing 52–76–2 (.408), with a playoff record of 1–1.

I'm not saying this is what would happen, I'm just saying the upside is limited whereas the downside is limitless.

Imagine the life of EGRIZ if Hauck or Dickenson were our new head coach.

Egriz would be split with Hauck and mods would have their hands full with the ensuing arguments. With Dickenson, most of GRIZ NATION would be behind this. Who would be the 1st to bash Dickenson? Some egrizzers would want the freedom of speech not exist on egriz if Dickenson were the new man. How hard would it be to bash Dickenson and/or not support him? It would take a lot for me to even consider posting anything even somewhat negative and harmless in nature about Dickenson.

If Super Dave is the next HC, Griz nation might collectively cream their pants.
do you realize that DD is in line for a HC job in the CFL ? Do you realize what kind of a pay cut he would take by coming back to UM ?

Geezus...I'll say it for the second time DD OR MARTY ARE NOT GOING TO BE THE NEXT HEAD COACH....holy christ.

Wisconsin Whitewater coach Lance Leipold. He has won 5 NC's in 7 years. His record is 100-6. His salary at the D III school is $103,876.00.

DD wouldnt come back, I would guess. Family, money and career arc...
But, anybody that thinks he wouldn't be successful is just stupid.

First thought was Breske if he sees the writing on the wall at wsu. Retain Ty and show him the ropes, hire Pflu as oc and call it a day...

He's too short to get the job done.

Just saying that if it happened, this whole place would freak out. It would be as if the messiah had retuned to Griz nation. Do I think it would happen? No. I was just making an observation. :thumb:

He has shown to be good, but how well would the DIII experience translate to FCS?

One never knows yet a 100-6 record shouts that the man can coach.

In general I'd much rather have a consistent known winner from a lower division than a complete unknown from a higher division.
