The Next Head Coach: the Real Discussion

Out of curiosity, with the recent influx of huge donations for program improvement projects, how much say will the higher level contributors have on this? I feel anyone having donated or committed to 6 digits or more should have some input. After all, the bigger a program gets the bigger factor donors play in it.

Can we hope Super Dave is getting tired of converting loonies and toonies into real money?

Why does everyone assume DD would be a great head coach? Loved the guy as a player, doesn't mean anything else.

we could just go on his college and CFL championship credentials. Or maybe take a peek at his superb post-career credentials, which includes being the OC of a 15-3 team.

With his experience he would have connections with countless coaches who would make great OC's and DC's at this level.

it's pie in the sky wish fullness but question his coaching abilities and credentials? Really?

I'll just put this out there:

MVD

Career record of 185-29.
Playoffs every single year but one since 1999.
8 NAIA championship appearances
6 National Championships

Yes, let it die. I expect the next HC to be of Haslam's generation.

This. Please, let's quash any bullshit about that coach now. Good man. Not right for this time at this program.

Dave Dickenson - would he leave the CFL for what I'd presume would be a step down in pay? Probably will be a CFL head coach soon, or at least have an opportunity to be one.

Kraig Paulsen - defensive minded coach, never been an FCS head coach but long time Montana roots. Could retain some current coaches that would fit well with him.

Brent Pease - would leave a higher paying job but would finally get the head coaching gig he's wanted. Wasn't he a finalist when Pflu was hired?

Ty Gregorak - maybe the only internal option, could hold the current group together well, knows the coaches he'd want to keep and others he'd want to replace. Kind of a quick rise to the job though, is he ready?

Mike Breske - probably going to be in the market for a new job once Wazzu's season is over. Is he HC material?

Mike Van Diest - NAIA to FCS is a huge leap. Just a few years ago he almost quit on Carroll (allegedly) due to a lack of passion for the job. We know he can win championships at the NAIA level.

Robin Pflugrad - Snowballs chance in hell?

I don't think any of these are a good or realistic option

. What I don't want is Henson or Gragg. Or any of the current staff to be HC.
Not to worry; it's recognized that no current assistant is ready for the HC job.

Will it be recognized by Kent Haslam? That's the bigger question.

Good list Brint, but don't you think Gragg would be an option from the current staff? Do you think Timm Rosenbach might be considered? What about Paul Wulff? What is he up to these days?

...and I'll just put this out there....was considered by both schools....he pulled his name each time...bridge burned...we move on...

Come on....work with me here!

Let's try and play in the world of common sense for once around here, shall we?
If we can't get a Jim McElwain or a Dave Doeren then I can soundly say take Marty and DD both off your lists.

I doubt this would happen, but I'd love to see Tim Hauck here. I do hope whoever takes the job will have Tim's passion for defense.
I've heard that Tim hates Las Vegas...could be an interesting option.

Oh, no doubt that Kent's door is open anytime a six figure donor walks in. And no doubt he listens and takes into account their thoughts.

But I doubt it goes much further than that.

Current OC/Assistant Head Coach (sorry Dave)

I really am liking the suggestion of Marty Morningwheg (sp?). I am sure he has invested wisely during his time in the NFL. He likely would not be looking to jump ship quickly, or at all. The man sure in the hell knows offense, and finding match ups to take advantage of. Too bad he is partnered with a stubborn Ryan with the Jets. The big ? is, what would his price tag be?

I'd also like to see Lex Hillard apply to be an assistant coach here. I have a feeling his playing days are over. I think he would make a solid RB coach, and definitely would instill GRIZ pride into the players. I also hope, no matter what, we keep Justin Green aboard.

Dave Dickenson - would he leave the CFL for what I'd presume would be a step down in pay? Probably will be a CFL head coach soon, or at least have an opportunity to be one. - I actually know some on this...not going to happen.

Kraig Paulsen - defensive minded coach, never been an FCS head coach but long time Montana roots. Could retain some current coaches that would fit well with him. We hated him as a D coordinator...couldn't prove his worth...no.

Brent Pease - would leave a higher paying job but would finally get the head coaching gig he's wanted. Wasn't he a finalist when Pflu was hired?- Possibly...did well under Hal and at Florida...He's at UW...this could be a real consideration.

Ty Gregorak - maybe the only internal option, could hold the current group together well, knows the coaches he'd want to keep and others he'd want to replace. Kind of a quick rise to the job though, is he ready?-Ty has been an okay D coach IMO. Probably the best coach next to Justin. However, he never seems to be consistent defensively...A better Paulsen??

Mike Breske - probably going to be in the market for a new job once Wazzu's season is over. Is he HC material?- Another good one Brint....He was amazing here....that's a tangible coach.

Mike Van Diest - NAIA to FCS is a huge leap. Just a few years ago he almost quit on Carroll (allegedly) due to a lack of passion for the job. We know he can win championships at the NAIA level. No, Nope, Nada...aint going to happen...burn and burned...charred...we're done with this road.

Robin Pflugrad - Snowballs chance in hell?
-I agree...snowballs chance...same coach who the president fired? No way would he come back...

Mike Van Diest , was allowed to pull his name rather than have it out that he wasn't selected for either job. He runs a terrific disciplined program, be it NAIA or not. He could have done just what Delaney has done the last three years and would have lost considerably less games.

This is kind of a Sarah Palin "I can see Russia from my house" moment for egriz. We see very little of the football world from Missoula and so we throw out a few names from our limited view.

I hope Kraig Paulsen isn't considered for the same reason I'd hope no coach demoted from DC to position coach on a mediocre team would be considered.

I have big concerns about the exposure any of the current Griz assistants have to the rest of the coliege coaching world. The only one who has truly had any exposure to other coaching staff's and potential hires for a new Griz staff is Kefense Hynson. Gregorak and Gragg have hardly left the confines of UM athletics. Our D-line coach might have better exposure to other programs than anyone. Is that what UM needs?

This is a tough choice for Haslam, but I like what he's doing with Griz basketball. Let's hope he can ! O the same here.

Cat fans can confirm...that was true with us...but as I recall it..the job was his in Bozo up until "he pulled his name"...boosters stepped up and paid him additional in Helena...in all, probably a money stint.
