The lesser publicized consequences of making the move

I don't care if we have to play NAIA in the playoffs as Lon as there is a playoff. Or some douches in their ivory castles can decide who gets to play to be the best and well never be there. Boise never will be either no matter how good they're still a crap school from a crap conference. If we move up that's exactly what we'll be.

Dupuyer Griz:

I respect your opinion on keeping UM in the FCS but come on! Did you just call Boise State a crap school from a crap conference? Like three quarters of the Griz fan base wouldn't want UM to change places with Boise State if they had the opportunity. Get real. I understand the financial risk argument of wanting to stay FCS but I just can't wrap my head around this desire to be a "shiny star in a sea of mud" year in and year out just because of a playoff system. It's a lower level of competition for God 's sake! Maybe the University of Washington can join the BSC/ FCS. Maybe their alumni would be happier at having a better chance of winning a National Title every year. Some fans just want The Bar set a little higher.

Bowl games blow hard core.
The college football fans (like you) that think bowl games blow are obviously in the minority. Just check their attendance and TV viewership and compare to any FCS NC game.

Yes. Well said.

Louisiana Tech went 9-3 last season, lost 59-57 to Texas A and M, and didn't make a bowl game because they finished 4-2 in their crappy conference.

No-name bowls aren't money-makers for small schools, and no-name bowls try as hard as they can to get 'name' programs in them, even if it means an 8th-place Big 10 team.

The no-name bowl games barely get better ratings than FCS games, plus there are a few that don't. Throw in that nobody goes to those games, and what it the point?

Don't forget that the schools that played in those game probably had to buy all those empty seats to get those attendance figures.

If Boise State goes 12-0 this year will they play in the championship game? No

Now, lets assume they are the only undefeated team...No still

Now lets say they are the only school that is undefeated and then the next best team is 10-2? Still no.

There isn't a chance that they will get to play for the championship unless there is a playoff. They are a crap school we are a crap school NAIA schools are a crap school. If you aren't in the Big 6 conferences it isn't going to happen. SEC ACC Big ten Big 12 Pac 12 Big East. This is the heart of my argument. I don't literally mean that the schools are crap, but in the big scheme of things when it comes to football you are or you are not. We are not so we will not. When they change to playoffs and we have a shot without anyone crapping on it I am in favor. All I want is shot at the championship that is it. From what I understand, Boise State will begin play in the Big East a conference that is an automatic qualifier. This would be there first chance to play for it.

Here is what I would totally support:
Division 1- the big 6 conferences like it really already is big 10 12 pac 12 big east acc sec
Division 2- sun belt cusa mac wac mtn west...and us somewhere in there with the remainder of the upper echelon schools in the FCS
Division 3-former d2
Division 4 - former d3

and for the breakdown of the only thing that I truly find important in all of this, all of these divisions would have a playoff to name a divisional championship. A damn playoff to determine who wins like every other sport in the damn world.

again, if you would like to look into something else I have said, I will say it again, the only thing I care about is a playoff to see who is best

If you look at the FCS as a single entity, the viewership is 5,390,000 which puts them in the 11th most viewed bowl...I know that isn't how it works, but we get to find out who is best aaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnndddddddddddddddddddd there's more football.

A shot at what? Are you talking about UM actually having a shot at a National Championship in football all divisions, ever?

I think he means just having a chance to say you have a chance. Not that UM is ever going to play for a big school title.

I honestly would rather watch 4 more Griz games than play in the Idaho Potato Bowl...I want a playoff, it is clear we will never be in for the BCS National Championship. I just want a playoff regardless of the level.

Oh gotcha, I fully agree. I thought you were saying you'd be for a "move up" as long as everyone in the Highest division has a chance to "qualify" for a playoff system at the highest level.

It's all about football for me. I love to watch it and more than anything I want to go to Missoula and cheer on my team. Playing 11 or 12 games against a lower conference in BCS and then playing in a bowl game on a Tuesday night in Arkansas doesn't sound great to me. Going to 6 7 8 9 10??? home Griz games. That's where it's at and playoffs get me to that spot.

Again great points. The fact that FBS doesn't have playoff is total "bull shit". Every time the NCAA or some "honk" on ESPN tries to "justify" the current FBS format, I get sick to my stomach. Just think about it this way. If you didn't have a "shiver" down your spine a few years ago when Boise State ran that "hook N Ladder and the "statue of liberty" to beat OU, you're not human. Who cares about the NCAA and their stupid Rankings and how they determine their National Champion. Everyone that watched that BSU/OU game knew who the best team was that day. Plus, Bob Stoop 's expression was worth more than any FCS playoff. Boise State is similar to Tark and his UNLV basketball teams thirty years ago. Once they "crashed the NCAA party" and started kicking everyone's ass, the basketball elite didn't care that UNLV competed in the Big West. All they knew was there was a new Sheriff in town. He was bald and sucked on a dish towel. Boise State is where it is today because they had the "balls" to dream big. Just like UNLV. Playing in a " no name" bowl for a few seasons is not a bad situation if you have a plan. I respect the shit out of Boise State.

Another thing about this is that UM could plan on having some 'payday' away games as a lower-tier FBS team, meaning that there wouldn't be as many home games in a season. Unless UM can get near 45k in terms of attendance, the idea of even a 2-for-1 home and home with any decent FBS program is a pipe dream.

Utah State, as an example, went 11-2 last year, won the WAC, averaged over 20k a game, and only had 6 home games. Their 2 losses were at Wisconsin 16-14, and at BYU 6-3. That team was 5 points away from going 13-0, and still had to play two 'payday' games. For that season, they played in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl against one scrub FBS team or the other.

UM doesn't have a shot in hell at winning a national championship in any other sport they offer.

Yet I cannot imagine anyone who would want those programs to step down and play lower competition just to have a shot at going to the DII playoffs. I don't understand why football is any different.
