I graduated in 1980. It was there then. On South Avenue.

Huh. I wonder if it turned into a Chinese spot and then Dominic's?

Behind the old Bob Wards, on the corner?
Been here since 1974 but wtf do I know.

It was located right about where they f***[*] up South Avenue when they f***[*] up malfunction junction...right across from what used to be the VoTech Center....
Wife graduated from Sentinel in 86' it was still there.

We think it got moved or tore down when they rerouted malfunction junction. Early 90's?

Ever try El Taco? There’s no drive through but they have a walk-up window and a cult following. As far as fast-mex-food, my hierarchy goes:
El Taco
Taco Time
Taco Johns
Taco Treat
Taco Bell
Town Pump

None of this is Mexican food. "Tacoladas" and "potato oles" aren't real things.

No self-respecting Arizonan will drive from Arizona to Montana to for Mexican food. When I visit Montana, I seek out good steak, burgers and Italian food. That's the good stuff up north.

Potato(e) oles aren't real things? Mr. Taco Johns would disagree with you. I SURVIVED HIGH SCHOOL with the help of the Taco Johns that was kitty corner from Sentinel. Taco burgers and potato(e) oles...

How long ago was it that there was a Taco Johns near Sentinel? I never remember one and I lived four blocks from Sentinel from 1982 to 2007.

I graduated from Sentinel in 1985 and ate MANY lunches at Taco John's. They were known for filling your cup to the brim with ice before adding your soda so we always had to order easy ice so we actually got some soda. I now live in the green Chile capital of the US... But I kind of miss those potato Oles.

I had a Taco John's next to my HS as well, but didn't go to Sentinel. They were known mostly for their tortilla, meat, cheese, bean, and rice combinations. I don't mean to pivot the convo, but wasn't there a Pickle Barrel down by Sentinel at some point? I remember they were known for sandwiches.

Never heard of it. We could walk to TJ’s or get in the car and drive to Hoagieville down on Higgins...those were about the only two options that were quick.

Yes, when I came to Missoula, late '90s & until early 2000s. It's now a Subway. I keep thinking maybe it's the site where the Taco John's was, but am unsure.

Damn, I could've sworn there was a Pickle Barrel in Missoula at some point. Known for cold cuts on bread with other toppings? Maybe it was named something else.

There WAS a PB at the corner of South Avenue & Higgins. I patronized it couple of times back in late 90s or early 2000s. About 2005 or so, it became something else & now Subway is at the site.

Hmm, doesn't seem to add up. You could be right, but I'm thinking of a great sandwich place that specialized in pre-sliced cold cuts of meat on bread, and you could add other toppings at your choosing. It can't be right if it was a Subway, as that is a completely different restaurant concept.

Now that I look at it again, I have to apologize to DaveyDeuce. My bad, man, there was a Pickle Barrel sandwich shop over on that corner that specialized in great sandwiches consisting of meat and bread and toppings of one's choosing. Kind of a bummer that it gave way to something so different. The silver lining is that there might be some other places in Missoula that can crack the code of meat and bread and toppings of one's choosing, but I seriously doubt it.

No need to get crazy. It simply was not there when I went to Sentinel.

Two things:

Yeah, Taco John's on South Avenue was a Missoula tradition. We called it "Taco Jack's." We liked the ice in the Cokes - coldest pop in town! One piece of trivia: Did you know that mass murderer Wayne Nance once worked there?

Also, maybe the confusion regarding the Pickle Barrel stems from the fact that they only served Pickles, not sandwiches (where customers got to choose their own breads and meats and such). Whoever heard of such a thing? It's almost crazy talk!

When I went to Sentinel 93 to 97, the only subway was down by the bowling alley and Heidlhause (sic), Acropolis near the corner of South and Higgins was great, we walked to Hardee's, Little Caesar's, or Dominic's Delicatessen, or we drove to McDonald's, Taco Bell, or the mall. Oh, and I would occasionally make it to Ole's for three hot dogs for 1 dollar.

I used to work right next to that Taco John's, which was on the corner of South and Stephens. It then became a dry cleaners. But it was a couple blocks West of Dominic's, which was originally the first Emmaus Road.

Might I suggest The Staggering Ox? Great sandwiches/wraps. I only wish they served beer. (Maybe they do now, as I no longer live in Msla.)

Pickle Barrel was where Subway is now on the corner of South and Higgins. Fantastic sandwiches ate there a few times in the early 00’s. Then it was discovered the owners were huge bobcat fans, Bobby banned the FB team from eating there and they closed down a year or two later. I can’t believe none of you remember that fiasco?

What makes it a fiasco? That there were Bobcats fans in Missoula?

There are a lot of us that remember the Pickle Barrel and also knew that it had been a Bozeman institution since the very early 1970's it not before that.

I had never heard the story of the football team being banned it though and that being the reason they shut down. I had heard that Subway didn't like the competition and ultimately made the owners an offer they couldn't refuse. Are there any other restaurant's i n town, like Plonk or McKenzie River Pizza that made this list? They both started in Bozeman by Bobcat supporters!
