There are a lot of us that remember the Pickle Barrel and also knew that it had been a Bozeman institution since the very early 1970's it not before that.
I had never heard the story of the football team being banned it though and that being the reason they shut down. I had heard that Subway didn't like the competition and ultimately made the owners an offer they couldn't refuse. Are there any other restaurant's i n town, like Plonk or McKenzie River Pizza that made this list? They both started in Bozeman by Bobcat supporters!
The guy who started the Plonk in Missoula, Bret Evje, went to UM. "Brett holds a Bachelor of Science in History from the University of Montana." Grew up mainly in Polson. His dad played football and basketball for the Cats. When Evje lived in Missoula, he had season tickets to the Griz. Evje also started Ciao Mambo in Missoula. Some of the money behind the Missoula Plonk is from a big Griz booster.
Plonk Bozeman was sold to the current owners about a dozen years ago. One of the owners and the head guy lives in Bozeman. Doubt that he went to MSU, but don't know. A silent investor lives in Bozeman too. Think Evje now lives near Livingston, where his dad grew up, because he has a kid with an ex-wife who lives there.
Trivia. Evje once owned the house that Jan Stenerud had built at Big Sky. A unique house near the Town Center, across the spur road.
