The guy who started the Plonk in Missoula, Bret Evje, went to UM. "Brett holds a Bachelor of Science in History from the University of Montana." Grew up mainly in Polson. His dad played football and basketball for the Cats. When Evje lived in Missoula, he had season tickets to the Griz. Evje also started Ciao Mambo in Missoula. Some of the money behind the Missoula Plonk is from a big Griz booster.
Plonk Bozeman was sold to the current owners about a dozen years ago. One of the owners and the head guy lives in Bozeman. Doubt that he went to MSU, but don't know. A silent investor lives in Bozeman too. Think Evje now lives near Livingston, where his dad grew up, because he has a kid with an ex-wife who lives there.
Trivia. Evje once owned the house that Jan Stenerud had built at Big Sky. A unique house near the Town Center, across the spur road.

Story goes that he ordered a Santa Fe Chicken sandwich while on vacation, liked it so much that he bought the company. While he owned it, some menu items had different names depending on where they were in the state. For example, the nachoish pizza was named the Griz in Missoula and named the Bobcat in Bozeman. Today, a franchising comapany based out of Kalispell owns the brand. The franchise owners for both stores in Missoula, the store in Polson, and I believe the store in Fargo are die hard Griz fans. Indeed, one of them was a cheerleader for the Griz and the other was the defensive line coach under Joe Glen.
My mistake! I had been told by a source i trusted that Plonk was originally started by a Bobcat booster who felt that area needed a fine Ala-Carte dining establishment along the lines of what he grew up knowing. That is how it started. I don't know about how it got to Missoula. Regardless, they are both fine places to eat although can be a bit pricey.
With regard to McKenzie River, my information came from one of the staff managers when they first opened on Front street. I believe they only have one restaurant in Missoula now as they closed the downtown location a while back, but I'm not 100% certain about that either. I know they are no longer operating the original Front Street location.

Any room in this thread for a bison fan? I'll be in town the 16-19/20. Plan is to hit up the carosel and park on Friday. Hike the M with my daughters (1 & 4) at some point other than that pretty open. Looking for suggestions.

Second, I suggest visiting the old Fort Missoula, and certainly the Smokejumpers center at Msla Co. International Airport. On one day, take a drive north on 93 to St. Ignatius. As you top Ravalli Hill & come down into the Mission Valley, you'll see a fine panorama of mountain beauty. Have lunch at the Old Timers in Mission (St. Ignatius). Enjoy the St. Ignatius Mission church, erected 150 years ago for the Indians, that includes frescos done by a Brother in the original Italian fresco manner. There is a Buddhist park just north of Arlee that you might enjoy, as well. Just a slight word of caution with regard to hiking the "M" with little ones particularly in mid August; be sure you've got plenty of sun screen and a lot of water, even early in the day! Temperatures could be in the high 80's and it's not a place you want kids getting beat stroke on.
