Tell me about Missoula

Given that you are driving up from AZ I can certainly understand why you don't want to drive any more once you get here and even the relatively short trip, ( by MT standards ), to Hamilton over the Skalkahoe to Philipsburg will run you close to 200 miles. It can be done in a day but it would be a very long day!

Given your time constraints and the acclimation you'll have to go through at the University, you are probably best served enjoying the sights and sounds of Missoula itself, with an obligatory river float thrown in. There are a couple small but great museums in town. Most notable is the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula and the entire Fort Missoula Regional Park. The exhibits on Glacial Lake Missoula and the 25th Infantry Bicycle Corps are fascinating!
The Museum of Mountain Flying and the Smoke Jumper Visitors Center are both worth a look, as is the Missoula Art Museum, which although small has some very notable pieces of art from some well known Artists.

On the Saturday Morning you are here take in the Farmer's Market downtown. It is actually 3 or 4 markets combined! In addition to the traditional produce one would find at a farmers market there are all sorts of crafts and other goods for sale a block south of the produce at the North end of Higgins Avenue. Then there is a separate market under the Higgins Street Bridge right on the Clark Fork River.

On Wednesday afternoon don't miss the weekly Out to Lunch Celebration at Caras Park. There is usually great music and a number of local food vendors that can give you a hint of some of the Restaurants you might want to visit later.

Finally, if the mountain is open a hike to the "M" is a must. Do that in the morning though to avoid the heat of the day.

Or, my personal favorite is to hike the M in the evening around 730 or 8, catch a little of the sunset. After you make your way down, ice cream at Big Dipper is a must! The line is usually long in the evening, but they have 3 windows, so the wait usually isn't too bad. A nice way to spend the last little bit of daylight imo.

I always liked hiking the M at dawn on Monday after an ill-advised weekend of debauchery. I never played, but I did it anyway . . . when I felt I owed it to myself. Many people with me on the hike were like, "Hey, GTFO of here, you're not a part of this team. Go pound sand." Haha! The fellas.

My wife and I are going to stay the night in Missoula instead of staying in Boze patrol for the Eagle Game with the Tiger CATS, MINNIE KITTIES OR WHAT EVER YOU ALL CALL THEM. Is there a good place for BBQ? WE thought the burger place by the University was awsome, and we would rather spend our money in your town. Am sad that our grandma Hazle passed away , so we no longe have a place up Ceder creek to stay. Anyway good luck this year, pound the Vandals and cats, look forward to next years game with you all in your beautiful stadium! Gooooooo Eags , own the Sky!!!!!!!

The Notorious P.I.G. downtown has amazing Kansas City BBQ.
Thank you very much! I love to fish, you all have some of the most beautiful streams and rivers , don't see many people fishing? Good luck this seaon, hope you make the playoffs!

There are some great trip suggestions here for you when you have more time. The one that doesn't take forever is the one that someone mentioned about going to Hamilton and having a burger at Nap's then taking the drive over Skalkaho Pass to Phillipsburg. Kick back there for a few hours with a beer and just relax. You can then head North and take the Interstate back to Missoula.
If you are coming to Missoula from one of the Metro areas in AZ I hate to say this but for the most part you will not be at all impressed with the food in this town for the most part.
I will say that most of the places mentioned above food wise are not worth the time or your money. I would check these ones out though.
Redbird, The Pearl and maybe Shadow's Keep overlooking Missoula for fine dining or a drink.
Definitely The Ox at 2-3 am for anything. Mo Club or 406 Burgers and Gyros for that.
Lisa’s Pasty Pantry for Pasty's and Fried Pork Chop sandwiches from scratch.
Paul's Pancake Parlour as breakfast food goes is really the only place in town worth eating at for breakfast.
If you decide to go to Mustard Seed DO NOT eat the food unless you are sitting at the bar for happy hour, it is all crap. The Happy Hour menu though is cheap and great as are the drinks.
One more thing, do not eat the Mexican food here, it all sucks. :thumb:

I would enthusiastically second Pols’s recommendation about the Skalkaho drive....unbelievably gorgeous and a relatively quick day trip. Shadow’s Keep is good too...and great views of the entire valley.

Pols, what’s the name of the breakfast place out at the Bonner exit? That place is pretty freaking good too...and much easier to get into than Pauls...
I think it is called River City Grill. Last i knew, they had excellent chicken fried steak and gravy as well.

I you are talking about the one at the truck stop then it is River City Grill. They do have a good breakfast but the CFS is not one of them. They use a frozen ass pumped full of crap one now.
I do hear good things about the Reno I believe it is in East Missoula though.

I disagree. El Casador, just doors down from the Wilma has great Mexican food at good prices. Their enchiladas & tacos are to die for; order one or both of those & go for the lime margarita on the rocks w/ salt, & you'll be a happy camper. :thumb:

Tried it three times, Nope, tastes like nothing. Like I said, coming from an area with a shitload of good food and even better Mexican food they won't be impressed. Kind of like I wasn't after getting out of the Corps and returning home to Montana Mexican food. :D

I also think El Cazador has the best Mexican food in Missoula. And FWIW, I think Mexican food in Arizona generally sucks. If it isn't New Mexico green Chile food, it usually ain't worth eating.

That would usually be the consensus of people who grew up in Montana. I mean the people in Missoula not that long ago voted Taco Bell the best taco in town. Then again they may be onto something.
BTW, having the best Mexican food in a town with crappy Mexican food is not a great recommendation.

I posted earlier that the Reno in E Missoula has one of the best breakfasts I've ever had - great way to get in front of a post game hangover. Their CFS is top notch.

Is it hand made or frozen? I refuse to go out for breakfast unless the place I am going to has an amazing handmade CFS. Too many times I have been told to check this or that place out only to find crap. :(
So far in this town the only place that has a decent but not amazing one is Paul's.
If you go to Spokane at all stop on the way over or back at Sam's in Kellog. In Spokane I would hit up Molly's. It is your basic dive but they serve a great breakfast. Their CFS is your choice of deep or pan fried and it is one of the best. The only one I have found better in this area, kind of, is in North Bend on the way to Seattle. The North Bend Bar & Grill makes their CFS out of a huge piece of prime rib and is actually really good. They also smoke in house their Salmon and Pork Butt.

I honestly don't know...

I've eaten a lot at both River City and the Reno, including having the CFS in both places. For my money neither one compares to JJ's Special CFS at the Oxford.

However the best chicken fried steak in this part of the country is at Montana Jack's Silver Grille in Philipsburg! Unfortunately, this is a supper club and they don't have breakfast. Also, it is only available on Wednesday & Thursday evenings.

The annual CFS convo seems a bit late this offseason. I guess I’ve never met a CFS I didn’t like. The only side-eye you’ll get from me is if your side isn’t mashed.
There’s a shitty little diner across from the bus stop that advertises a cheap CFS like those shrimp cocktail deals you see at Vegas, and it probably attracts the same crowd, too. For the connoisseurs, it’s probably revolting, but to me, it’s chicken fried heaven.
Here’s another slice of heaven many find revolting: Town Pump burritos.

That's it. Personally, I think it's as good as Pauls, with 1/10th the wait. Definitely worth the drive.

There aren't many people. That's the beauty of it. 8-) 8-)

Don't know if this has been mentioned yet but the liquid planet grille just across the street from campus has really great food and drinks. My favorite biscuits and gravy in town, throw an egg on it and add some of their candied bacon ... yum. Actually just writing this is making me hungry so I think I'm gonna head over there for lunch!

Way back in the day the Ox had a good one. They also now use a frozen one that tastes like crap.

:) There is a truck stop just over the Idaho border on I-15 in Dubois. For the most part that crap really really sucks. This place though actually has some burritos that are simply amazing for a gas station. :thumb:

Ever try El Taco? There’s no drive through but they have a walk-up window and a cult following. As far as fast-mex-food, my hierarchy goes:
El Taco
Taco Time
Taco Johns
Taco Treat
Taco Bell
Town Pump

El Diablo is a pretty good, under-rated (imo) burrito joint. Though not truly "Mexican" I suppose. It shares the same little strip mall building near the Higgins round-a-bout as Grizzly Grocery.
