Take a statistical look at the pass defense

if you're a top caliber team you're probably going to get passed on a lot as you're often times ahead. That is not the case with the griz who are constantly behind because our pass defense

Seriously? Are you sure you're not watching UNC?

App State - 16 points before App scored.
UND - scored first, then we rattled off 33 straight.
OPSU - scored the first 38
PSU - We scored first, led 21-6, 35-13, 55-20
UC-Davis- scored first 21, and the last 21 sandwiched around UCD's only TD
Cal Poly - Actually trailed in this one for most of the game, albeit by just 7
EWU - Led this one 10-7 before imploding. Didn't stop EWU from continuing to pass
Sac State-went back and forth, led 17-10, 38-24, 45-38. After Sac's TD early in the 3rd to tie it we never trailed again.

So, in a nutshell, you're dead wrong.

Hey look another overly aggressive post for no reason.

I don't even consider the first 3 games due to the level of opponent we faced. NAU obviously didn't throw it on us because their NAU. With the exception of 1 drive PSU was passing on us from the get go, fairly successfully too but we jumped to a huge lead early, they didn't result to passing because we were ahead...that was the game plan all along. UC Davis was over before their offense had any hope of making any plays although they were balanced. Cal Poly doesn't pass period. We lost the lead to EWU DUE to the passing attack...kinda like I said... and they didn't stop passing once they were ahead. In fact this forum board even acknowledged the fact that maybe they passed too late in the game when we even had a chance of coming back. Obviously they knew we couldn't defend the pass so they just kept going with it. Your defense against the sac state game was, "Well we didn't lose the lead after the 3rd quarter so obviously we weren't behind!" Let's be real here for a second. We had to go to overtime in a back and forth game with a sub par opponent.

Your statement that we're "constantly behind" in games this season has been proven categorically untrue. Deal with it.

You're quite angry. It's kinda funny. I provided analysis that were behind in games due to our pass defense. If our pass defense wasn't crappy we would be 8-1 blowing out every opponent except nau which if you even watch the games, which I doubt, you would understand that our defense had nothing to do with that game loss because they didn't pass it.

Deal with it?

Seriously though, grow up. You're a child

We gave up 168 yards rushing to Sac Sate on 38 attempts: 4.3 yards, not bad at all !!!

But we gave up 412 through the air to The Hornets, and 437to Eastern. While I agree with Brint that our Pass D is better than last year, the improvement is marginal, especially against good teams with a balanced offense like Eastern and Sac State.

If we want to make the playoffs and win a game or two, we have to stop giving up over 400 yards a game in passing. Vince Lombardi, Chuck Noll, or Bill Walsh I ain't, but even an armchair quarterback like me can figure that out.

Some suggestions:

1. Rotate the starting 4 DL more frequently to keep them fresh and by so doing, help Holmes, Wagenmann, and Crtittenden get more push on the opposing QB and more sacks. Same applies
to Takai, Bienemann, Ginn, and Kidder as porous as our Pass D is, the front 4 has to get more push up front because if we blitz, we are vulnerable if we don't sack The QB. I am in favor of some well-timed bliztes, but we can't overrely on sending 5-7 after the QB frequently, or we will continue to get burned.

2. If the opposing team goes 4 or 5 wide with an empy backfield, pull a LB, put in another DB and our best cover safety--don't try to cover a WR with a LB like we did vs. Eastern--it doesn't work !!!

3. Use a more balanced pro-set attack on offense so that our D doesn't get ground into the ground by time of possession--run the ball, use our huge O line, and realize a 5-9 minute drive that results in points, especially a TD, helps the entire team, including our D.

Well, that's my 2 cents ... go ahead, shoot away and tell me that I am nuts !!!

Solid points all around. :thumb: :thumb:

Those are solid points. Only comment I have is point 3 where you say something along the lines of run behind our big o line. I agree if we could but we have had minimal success running behind our o-line. They seem to actually not be that great at run blocking

If I appear angry it's because I've violated the cardinal rule of never arguing with an idiot--and you're proving the old adage true.

What's really funny is watching you try to defend a moronic statement and then deflect when you've been proven wrong. Oh, and you're wrong again, by the way: I watch every game. Most games I watch live, and then 2-3 times on replay.

You made a statement that we were "constantly behind" in games this season due to our pass defense--with ZERO analysis, by the way. I proved that statement to be wildly incorrect. We have NOT been constantly behind. In fact, through 9 games there's only three games where we've actually been behind AT ALL (save for UND's lone early TD). If, in your mind, that constitutes "constantly", well then so be it-you're beyond help. And how can you "not even consider the first 3 games"? What, because our opponents were worse than anticipated somehow those stats don't count? Or is it because the stats from those three games don't fit into your reality? Sounds like you have a "what have you done for me lately" attitude. The opponents got better, we aren't "blowing out every opponent" like we did in games one through six (NAU being the lone exception) and suddenly our team (read: pass defense) sucks and we're "constantly behind".

Well, those are the only ones you'll read, apparently. 8-)

Why would I bother reading any of your long posts when you think our season is going good because we're 7-2 when our best win is against ranked #42 FCS team

You can read whatever you want. I really couldn't give two shits about it. But if you're going to RESPOND, make it factual or you'll be called out. This is the interwebs, pal. It's serious bidness.

Oh, and the team can only play the teams on the schedule. And be honest, after last year's debacle, did you REALLY think we were going to beat App State? EWU? NAU? UND? Be completely honest with yourself and admit that you're tickled pink we're 7-2 and not 4-5 like we were last year, already knowing we were going to be sitting home for the playoffs.

The 20 seconds I use to read your short posts in between my tasks at work isn't considered worthwhile time to me :). And to be fair you've responded to me more than I've responded to you

You had some good suggestions, but here is mine:
1) Line up Tully, Hermanson and Goodwin 25 - 40 yards from the line of scrimmage. No matter what happens, nobody gets by these 3.
2) Rush 3 d-ends, 2 d-tackles and all 3 line backers every time, and the QB gets hit hard every time regardless of when he throws it (doesn't really cost you anything cause they would have picked up those 15 yards on the next throw over the middle)
3) By the 3rd Qtr if the QB is still effective add another DT in the mix (it is only a 5 yard penalty for having 12 men on the field).
4) Only give up Field goals, not touchdowns in the red zone.

This will accomplish a few things:
1) TOP will be greatly in favor of the Griz since the other team will be moving down the field so fast (until their QB just keeps fumbling the snap to not have to face the rush).
2) Griz will have by far the best Rushing defense in the country (cause seriously, who would bother to run against that d-alignment?)
3) E-griz would set new use records every game.

Thoughts?

I like it, but I'm still trying to figure out which end the third defensive end goes to. Perplexing.

He piggybacks on the d-end lined up on the wide side of the field, duh..this will help facilitate some double lb blitzes utilizing the oft forgotten wheelbarrow technique..
