Swagger under Stitt

Ummmm by not kicking off twice in one game. That would help with swagger for sure :)

I KNOW. I got SO tired of Delaney doing that every game. :? :?
That was not delanys fault it was the captains. They won the toss and chose to kick. Then the second half the other team chose to recieve. The correct response for a captain after winning the toss is recieve or defer to the 2nd half.

Don't go all Ron Ash on the players here. MD was the head coach and it's his job to make sure the captains know what they are supposed to do.

Not true. Delaney said in an interview after the game that he elected to kick twice to try and take advantage of the fierce wind by electing to choose what side they wanted instead of whether to kick or receive.

Sorry, that's not how it happened. Won the toss and deferred. UNC chose to receive. Came out in the second half and deferred again. UNC chose to receive. Not much swagger there.

A couple of posters have mentioned that swagger comes with winning. I would call it confidence rather than swagger and it must be earned by winning. The Griz under coach Hauck had confidence that they would win when they ran on the field and confidence they could come back and win in games that it appeared likely they could lose.
According to Webster, swagger means to walk with a conceited or lordly swing or strut. Also, to boast or brag noisily. No, we don't want our student-athletes to have swagger, but confidence of winning.

You forgot the best part of that whole debacle: he took the kick to the house!!!

Now that the Delaney Daze are over, it's much easier to laugh about shit like that.

Delany was proud of the philosophy he instilled in his defense that they should avoid penalties in their style of play. This is a swagger killer. NDSU plays aggressively, pushing the limits until they get called. We used to have this philosophy years ago. It began to diminish in BHs later years, diminished more under Pflu and disappeared completely under Delany. We need teams to fear us, not prepare for us.

Agreed. NDSU O-linemen hold, trip, tackle, etc., until its called. Don't blame them for it either, its the way we were coached in high school: "holding is what the the refs say it is, not the rule book ".

This whole line of thinking is pure poppycock, plain and simple.

Actually it's not....surprisingly. Bohl's OL coach was incredible at coaching them very well at holding without getting called, specifically.

Right. I wouldn't use that term, but Stitt did use it, and I think that's what people are responding to in this thread. I assume Stitt meant confidence more than conceit.

Speaking of Bobby, I definitely don't think a coach should have "swagger." Stitt sure as hell doesn't demonstrate that. Bobby was cocky, maybe even a tad arrogant, but what the hell, he recruited Trumaine Johnson, so he had that going for him. :|

You don't have the option to defer in the second half, you either kick or receive...

Fair enough, the Griz deferred (and kicked off) in the first half then chose to kick in the second.
