With that said, I was thinking recently I’ve noticed some obvious and tangible changes on this team vs Stitt coached teams. I would like to discuss those and want others to chime in as well. Many people said Bobby coming back would have very noticeable change to this team and that it would happen quickly. Others have said it will take a few years and won’t happen overnight if it happens at all. Well, where are we at? From my perspective, here’s what I have seen and noticed that is very different with this team:
- a no quit attitude who plays whistle to whistle. I’m not certain our teams the last few years could have come back on Sac St or WIU after going down two scores. I feel they folded easier. This team doesn’t quit and it’s very refreshing
- tough and physical - this team seems to play with more attitude and more effort and more physicality or edge. Cal Polys Protheroe said the Griz D was the most physical he has played. That’s a huge compliment being they played NDSU earlier.
- tackling and swarming to the ball - this team is vastly improved with their tackling and swarming to the football. It’s very noticeable.
- multiple offensive formations - one of my biggest hang ups with Stitt O was there really were only a couple of formations and it seemed very easy to defend for a savvy DC. These 3 TE sets and motion and multiple formations are keeping defenses off balance and confused and it’s making a difference
Special teams - night and day improved in all phases. I am almost shocked at how much better our special teams are on every level. We already have a kickoff return, flowers has one of the highest kick return averages, Semenza is tops of big sky and tops nationally with FGs, JLM is ranking high with his punt returns, our punt and kick coverages are as good as I can remember and also ranking high.
Adjustments - I feel that our offense and defense has made great pre-game and in-game adjustments based on what is happening on the field. I feel like we lacked at that ability the last few years
Creativity - I feel like this team isn’t so stubborn that they stick to a certain scheme or mindset. They literally adapt according to who they are playing. For example, vs Sac St we see Sneed rush for 200+ And then one week later he barely runs and Eastwood racks up 130 instead. Early we had a hard time rushing up the middle so we started using JLM and Sulser on the edges with fly sweeps. Some of the ways we have used our TEs in blocking and on pass catching routes has been stellar. I’m not sure our last staff used this type of creativity and really tried to stick with one identity regardless whether it was working or not.
These were just some of the tangible or noticeable things I’ve seen. What else we got?

In another thread I disproved the “Stitt teams wouldn’t come back from being down in games” theory. They did. Repeatedly. there were a number of games where they were down early. They never threw in the towel or gave up (although body language may have said something different)...there’s ample evidence that they didn’t.
Stitt DID adapt his schemes, although more out of necessity than by design. His scheme just really didn’t “work”, and he didn’t have the people he thought he needed to run it correctly and thus added blocking “H” backs, almost NEVER used the infamous “jet” sweep he was a famous for, etc.
Ironically enough, Stitt’s offense would have worked MUCH better with a QB like Sneed who could actually run.
Other than that I agree with the vast majority of your post. Love the way this team plays. Every single play.

I think Bobby's attention to detail is less compromised because he has the ability and the time to evaluate all aspects of the team each week. I think this also makes him the elite ST coach he is. This staff is far more experienced than the one Stiff put together and appears to be far more disciplined, which shows up on the field. The team seems more balanced on both sides with everyone knowing and doing their job play in play out.

Agree about staff for sure. It's definitely a stellar crew but, also, while attending practices over the summer, I witnessed Hauck actively and assertively coaching the coaches just as he did the players.
"WHAT THE F*CK WAS THAT?? MY GRANDMA COULD HAVE MADE THAT TACKLE!! FOLLOW HIM, CJ. GET OVER THERE AND F*UCKING COACH HIM!"
That kind of thing....

It kind of makes you think. If Reese Phillips doesn’t get hurt, is Stitt still the coach?
