Britt's only meaningful snaps this season came in the NDSU game. It was the only one that was still in doubt when he entered the game, albeit briefly at that. Brown was the backup QB for both the SacState and Weber games. At that point, depth charts were there for a reason and we don't experiment in close games, or something to that effect. Weber held the offense to a buck-forty as you'll recall and much of that wasn't on the QB. The other albatross of the development process on the offensive side of the ball is the O-line, which got manhandled.
I think what continues to get lost in all of this talk of development frustrations are the logistics of it all. A transfer is going consume an inordinate amount of coaching resources because they're coming in cold and are expected to be "the guy" from day one. The backup get 30% of the snaps in normal practices and the remainder of them are catch as catch-can. What makes anyone think that at some point during a season, that you'll have guys on the bench who can come in without an enormous drop-off? All eggs, one basket. And as someone on here has pointed out, that seems to be a losing strategy long-term because guys get injured at some point during the season.
Truth is, Britt, Brown and Abbott should just hit the portal. Brown been demoted in-season for the past two, why would he be a viable #2 going forward? Wait, Hauck is still here, forget that. Britt is a different QB type from what I see in the potential new guy, so they'll be tweaking the offense to promote him not running like an LJ or Britt could. I didn't say he couldn't run, but that wasn't the offense at Indiana. Nobody has seen Abbott in game conditions, but I'd bet he was hopeful of competing, not just holding the clipboard until his class became viable for consideration for playing time. Huot and Ah-Yat can handle to scout teams. Much as any of us would love to believe that there is a "guy" among them, I don't think the coaches believe it, thus you get transfers.
The schizo selection and development process at Montana isn't going to get any better until they actually find a guy with the goods, develop him and a good backup, and push all their chips into the middle of the table. Until then, welcome back to Bobby-ball.
