QB transfer?

It's been mentioned on this thread and others as well as all over the country that the new portal system could end the way college teams recruit, especially from the HS ranks. Clearly there needs to be incoming HS kids but not at the same rate maybe and that would be sad. More competitive bigger schools like throughout Texas could be feeding most of the country in future. I think Montana HS kids could take the hardest hit, at the D1 level at least. Hope I'm wrong.

If teams just trade players, and also have players run out of eligibility, the HS kids have to go somewhere. I think the portal could give programs like Montana an opportunity to sign HS prospects we didn't have a chance at before.
Yea, thru natural attrition there will need to always be HS athletes but I will change it some.
Then there is a question on Scholarships.

I don't recall the article but I read something a couple weeks ago in which high school coaches says the portal has completely changed the game. Teams that used to have 15-20 colleges coming to games watching players now just have a handful. The Blue Chip guys are still going to draw attention and go to big schools. But for a lot of the kids just a step below, these big schools are letting the FCS land these kids as almost a farm program. With the hope if they perform well they'll enter the portal. makes sense to me.

I guess the hopes for schools like ours is that when we land these kids, they'll love the fit so much they don't enter the portal. But I'm sure many will. But we'll still have the kids on the flip side not getting playing time in FBS and come to us for playing time and exposure.

It's all pretty fascinating to watch. Going to be a mixed bag I think. The best coaches will be the ones that adjust and roll with the punches I suppose.

Agreed. Even if the kids on their way up do decide to hit the portal after a few years, the most successful FCS coaches will embrace their role as a farm system. Hell, it's crazy talk, but even use it as a selling point if it's inevitable. "We've placed x number of players in the P5 via the portal in the last x years." We still get the kid for 2-3 seasons on an upward trajectory instead of 1 after a flameout in the big leagues. Kind of like how live music is better in Nashville with unknowns than at some Casino with Hall & Oates unplugged.

I know this opinion is unpopular because I feel like a lot of people want to believe every signee bleeds maroon or vim yellow. It sounds good, but it's just not true. If we're going to be a means to an end, at least try to find a way to use it to our advantage.

PS: Was the thing you read the tweet from the Mt. Spokane coach who thought more of his players should be getting offers?

It may have been based on that but it was an actual article. Not sure if that was the coach or not or if a lot of HS coaches are saying the same thing.

Makes sense in my eyes. Regardless of how good the kid is, there is always risk involved with high school players. So why not let another school take that risk, see how they develop, and then take a stab at them? Obviously risk in that as well but I certainly can't fault the coaches of P5 schools for taking that route.

That door swings both ways. FCS can certainly raid the depth charts of FBS teams. Gems are found where you find them. The COVID year situation has not cleared yet either.

Over the last couple of years, I have noticed that Weber has signed more 3* guys than they did in the past. That is likely a result of the Portal/COVID effects, along with having a winning program that has been putting guys in the NFL.

Lots of kids who could be convinced to change their minds here:

Pretty amazing that Weber has (3) Three Star QB’s committed for next year.
Go Griz!

I saw a few highlights of the Munoz kid out of Charter Oak this season on a local show called The Challenge. Basically a HS football show that airs on NBC after SNF. Idk about the other two, but he looks legit.

Coaches need to coach-up and put the qbs we have in a place to succeed. No reason we can't win with young qbs like Idaho and MSU have done.

Problem is their young qbs are better then ours.

Dude come on. Everyone knows finding HS kids and investing time in them is a fools errand. Portal is where its at baby.

Get where you’re going with this but I’d say the Cats qb situation is evidence you can be successful both routes.

All due, Mellott is a great runner, leader, and fits like a glove in their offensive system. Park him in a more conventional offense and see what you've got then. Great runner, great leader and below average passer, which is what today's game is about for 99% of the football playing world. He might be able to make himself into one, but I wouldn't count on that.

The sad thing you note about the Idaho kid is that he seemed to catch fire when the coach brought in his transfer replacement from his old school, SDSU. He played against Montana the year before and couldn't get out of his own way. But that was Petrino, Eck seems to be able to actually develop guys with talent. And they seemed to have a real competition for the spot - isn't that amazing?

Mellott would have been playing safety behind Robby if he had come here. Brown has the size and range to play linebacker next year so we are all good there. Lol

Uh, did you happen to see some of the passes Tommy made in the first two playoff games? If not, tune in Saturday and see what happens.

When 80% of your offense is running and forces teams to overload the box, 50/50 balls become much more prevalent due to 1 on 1 coverage across the secondary. He’s a damn good athlete and that staff has done a good job with this offense around him and your strengths. As pointed out, if a team were to shut the run game down and force him to drop back 25+ times to beat them, I don’t think he has the ability to do it. Luckily theres nor anybody who has managed to do that. He’s definitely worked on that part of his game and that has helped to take advantage when those opportunities have opened up. That will be the difference between last year and this year for you guys.

Obviously your post is evidence of Meth abuse in America. How you can diminish a Hall & Oats show at a casino in the backwoods of Arizona. It’s almost like the world is upside down!

STOP THE MADNESS you madman! Next you’ll be bad mouthing the Captain and Tenneel, you fiend you!

I think he has developed into a better passer than you are giving him credit for, however, if he were playing here at Montana we would be calling him tacklin Tommy, not touchdown Tommy because you know our coaches would have immediately put him on defense

Fun fact: 42% of FBS players who enter the portal either
A: Drop down to FCS
B: Never play college football again
Is there a breakdown of those two? It'd be really interesting to see how many just never play again.
