I think Robin is a solid coach, one who certainly had the team playing well the last 3 or 4 weeks of the year. But I agree; I was at the Western Oregon game and I wasn't saying such appreciative things about his offense that day. I'll simply say that if I had to grade him, I'd probably have to give him an "Incomplete".
That's a pretty fair grade. Pflu's coaching prowess is way over hyped on this site. While I am one of his biggest defenders - he never should have been fired - I don't think his offensive scheme would have ever produced a national championship, as it has never produced one at this level or at the FBS level. A good coach, yes. A great coach? remains to be seen...
his first team couldn't make the playoffs after back-to-back national runner-up finishes. the first time we didn't make it in around 25 years. his second team, led by a great defense that included two n.f.l. draft picks, had five games, a b.s.c. title and playoff appearance wiped out in large part due to his failure to oversee the football program adequately. the team he left behind went 5-6, our first losing season in almost 30 years and is now on probation for the next three years. wow, yeah, he's great! we need to find another coach just like him!!
that's his record w/o the sugar-coating. fortunately delaney's running the show now. huge difference on the police blotter, w-l column, and program image. delaney is a model in what you want in a college football coach. if pflu was still here we'd probably end up with a 3 year playoff ban on top of everything else. amazing that people don't see what a complete failure he is. he took a program that had some off-field issues, but had been to back-to-back finals and drove it straight off a cliff.
people try to credit him for bringing in j.j. lost in j.j.'s not guilty verdict is the fact that at best he made a really poor decision to take advantage of a girl that he had known for at least a year and appeared to want a serious relationship with him. despite that he used her for sex. at best, because no one knows what really happened that night. the b.m.o.c. and he had to resort to that to get laid. a real quality recruit.

Yeah, never mind that the 2009 team had Chase Reynolds, TBF, Marc Mariani, Pfahler, Beaudin, both Palmer brothers, and Andrew Selle.
In other words, Just about EVERY skill position had to be replaced in 2010 (once Selle went down with the shoulder injury), including three that went to the NFL and two that are STILL in the NFL. I'm sure THAT had nothing to do with us going 7-4...

And you make those players out to be chopped liver. Every one of them was instrumental in us being 14-1 and in the NC game in '09.

Both of them ran systems nearly identical to the other. The people who still hate on Pflu for diving right into his system are hilarious.Grizbeer said:I gotta say the 2010 team had the same or more talent as 2008 or 2009. Agreed, it's tough to put him way up there after only two years, but I remember thinking after the Northern Iowa game that he was building our program into a juggernaut.EverettGriz said:I'm just hard-pressed to call a guy who was a head coach for two years great, when one was a non-playoff year. I love the man, but to call him great? I think it's premature.
Of course I want us to make the playoffs every year, and the 2010 team was surely capable of beating just about any team in the field. I'm just saying that putting off the easy way of slowly trying to switch the offense over was ultimately better for the team the next season.havgrizfan said:uofoman, I'm in the camp I'd ALWAYS want the Griz to make the playoffs, even if I knew they were going to get bounced in the first round, of which case there was only one season I ever KNEW that in advance and that was the trip to Western Illinois. Any Griz fan who says they would rather the Griz just not make the playoffs if they can't win it all is just weird to me. But then again, maybe I'm the weird one for thinking the first step to ever winning a national title is making the damn playoffs in the first place. Can't win one if you're not even in the field.
FTR, I will forever believe that the 2010 Griz team could have beaten many teams in the playoff field that year. Did they deserve to get in? That's debatable, and Plfu actually said he believed they were the top team on the first four out line, so whether they deserved to be in or not, they were very close to getting in at 7-4. And I don't think that team was so bad that it didn't have any chance of advancing had it been given an at-large berth.
BWahlberg said:NLGrizFan said:How many of you guys think Pflu ran the program into the ground?
(I don't, for the record. I think the Griz missed the playoffs in 2010 cuz Chase was injured during the last 2 games.)
Chase actually played the whole season hurt. Hurt his shoulder bad in the opening division 2 game on a touchdown. With 2 weeks go go in the season he then damaged his other shoulder too, as I was told.
