Oh, come on, gbb, you know what they were getting at. Paoli made his harsh comments just prior to Williams' confirmation as a member of the BoR, which is a privilege. Williams, on other hand, made his inflammatory comments just prior to Jordan Johnson's trial for rape, which could have easily tainted the trial and jeopardized his presumption of innocence and potentially his freedom, which until that trial were his rights.

There's a huge difference between the two, and you know it.

Sorry, but the way it was written insinuated that playing football is a right rather than a privilege.

You need to go back to reading class and develop some reading comprehension skills if that's the way you read it. Nowhere in that post did it compare playing football to serving on the board of regents. Now when comparing whether or not somebody is locked away for 10 to 20 years to whether or not somebody is confirmed to serve on the board of regents... It is pretty obvious which scenario has more at stake

Teton, I'm not interested in doing any research on the use of the word "Thug" towards a group of young, african american males. I know how many of them feel about the word. I would challenge you to do your own research. Ask DMAC how he feels about an old white man calling young african american football players "thugs". Ask Elvis Akpla how he feels about it. And since this isn't a Griz-Cat rivalry thing, as you seem to be making it, ask Vernon Adams too, or ask Zach Baumann how they feel about that word and that sterotype. No need to respond. Well written piece. I especially like how he touched on the racial overtones of Williams' comments. I don't think that has been addressed enough. I am certain Pat is NOT a racist. I am in agreement with Paoli that his comments were and I'm quite certain from his responses since the original quotes, he just doesn't seem to care that he's seriously hurt and offended a lot of kids and their families, let alone so many people he was appointed to represent.

Could you please post some links and/or research showing that the word "thugs" is racist? Nothing about it in Websters dictionary. In old gangster movies from the 30's,40's, and 50's the "heavies" in the film that did the enforcing were referred to as "thugs".....they were all ways big,mean,tough, AND WHITE!!! Maybe I"m missing something here....are there any other words that are racist [other than the obvious ones that I won't mention] that ordinary non-racist people may be using?

The racism was "implied" in his comments. Thinly veiled racism is sometimes worse than overt racism.
Remember, this guy is a public figure.

Paoli is bombastic and comes across as a lot of bluster in the courtroom. However, he has undeniable intensity and demonstrated the ability to think on his feet during the trial. God forbid if I needed a defense attorney I would not hesitate to hire him. I think his guest column was fantastic and right on the money. Thanks for posting it here egrizzers.

If I had to guess at characterizing William's prejudice, I would say he is probably not intentional being racist, just not up to speed on the lexicon. He is however overtly prejudice against athletes, particularly football players. He carries that sad old mantra that universities must always "look to the library" before spending anything on athletics - implying that athletic ability is not a legitimate form of intelligence or is not a worthy avenue of education. I say athletics at UM contributes far more than just a huge economic boost to Missoula and the school. The return on investment is a no brainer. Which brings us back to Williams...
