PAOLI GUEST COLUMN IN MISSOULIAN

Teton, I'm not interested in doing any research on the use of the word "Thug" towards a group of young, african american males. I know how many of them feel about the word. I would challenge you to do your own research. Ask DMAC how he feels about an old white man calling young african american football players "thugs". Ask Elvis Akpla how he feels about it. And since this isn't a Griz-Cat rivalry thing, as you seem to be making it, ask Vernon Adams too, or ask Zach Baumann how they feel about that word and that sterotype. No need to respond. Ask em' or don't ask em'. I don't really care what your viewpoint is on it. The word is hurtful and offensive to a certain group of people and even if you don't think it should be, the fact is, it is.

I just thought you'd like to do some research to back up your opinions....you are all ways challenging others to do the same!!! Kinda touchy when you're called out I noticed....are you feeling "hurtful" too? Would you like a hanky? Must be a long list of words that offend you.

The best argument Paoli makes is at the end where argues that rants to a New York newspaper does nothing but stir the pot. We need someone who will "'devise a plan of action.'" This is exactly what needs done. We need someone who is forward thinking, not someone stuck like a pig in the stag-mire.

If you are going to pick a pissing match - make sure it is one that makes sense. Sorry, but you sound like a jackass on this one Teton.

I'm sure you must be an expert in nomenclature too.....Hey, if a white guy beats up a convenience store clerk with a baseball bat is he considered a thug? If not what other names could you call him?

Just reading through the comments here... one poster mentions that Paoli doesn't have the "reputation that he thinos he has" in the Missoula community. Those of you who live in the Missoula area - what is the general opinion of Dave? He seemed like a likeable & respectable person IMO.

Pauli is well-regarded and respected in the community generally and as a topnotch lawyer. Paoli is a great guy too and completely likeable. The person making that comment doesn't know what he's talking about and is probably just another idiot internet.

wow, a swing and a miss there hg

PW didn't specify African Americans, so a better test would be to ask some of the fizz players what they think about being called "thugs", if the African American players were more offended than the white ones then you might be on to something, but my bets are that they would all be equally offended by PW's statement which would indicate that you are full of crap again like usual.

On another note, do any of you see the irony of this douchebag Paoli doing basically the same thing that PW did, and putting questionable statements in the public right before the vote on PW.

Paoli is basically claiming that PW's statement could have hurt JJ's case, but the reality is that it didn't, the jury was obviously able to get past the press of the case and make a judgment based on the evidence presented in the trial.

Both of these scum suckers should be thrown in the river if you ask me. :thumb:

There's a big difference between JJ's & PW's situations... PW's appointment to the BoR is a PRIVELAGE... not a right.

Well written piece. I especially like how he touched on the racial overtones of Williams' comments. I don't think that has been addressed enough. I am certain Pat is NOT a racist. I am in agreement with Paoli that his comments were and I'm quite certain from his responses since the original quotes, he just doesn't seem to care that he's seriously hurt and offended a lot of kids and their families, let alone so many people he was appointed to represent.

Could you please post some links and/or research showing that the word "thugs" is racist? Nothing about it in Websters dictionary. In old gangster movies from the 30's,40's, and 50's the "heavies" in the film that did the enforcing were referred to as "thugs".....they were all ways big, mean, tough, AND WHITE!!! Maybe I"m missing something here....are there any other words that are racist [other than the obvious ones that I won't mention] that ordinary non-racist people may be using?

There are lots of articles/discussions on the internet, discussing whether the term is racist. Many people believe it is; some disagree; some believe it depends on the usage. I'm of the view that it depends on the usage, and there are certainly times when it is not. It was interesting the Williams said UM recruits thugs, and then later clarified that Johnson (white) was not a thug. I think PW's usage was in fact at least borderline racist, especially given his clarification, because I don't think he was referring to things that our white players had done. It would interesting to know who he thinks were thugs.

See below. Just google: "is thug racist".

""Thug" is the new N-Word, usually trotted out by right-wingers only in the context of African-Americans who are doing something they don’t want them to do."

That's why I thought Paoli's response was so good. It's an in your face response. If douchey PW can do it then why not I kinda thing.

Oh and Jake Weezy's comment I think, was the first post of his I haven't laughed at. Not hatin' brah. Maybe you just weren't blunted. I'ma bust out before the iron starts clappin. ;)

Not even sure why you threw this statement into the argument but when the F*#! did playing football become a right? If I have a "right" to play football then sign me up Coach Delaney. I won't let you down.

Oh, come on, gbb, you know what they were getting at. Paoli made his harsh comments just prior to Williams' confirmation as a member of the BoR, which is a privilege. Williams, on other hand, made his inflammatory comments just prior to Jordan Johnson's trial for rape, which could have easily tainted the trial and jeopardized his presumption of innocence and potentially his freedom, which until that trial were his rights.

There's a huge difference between the two, and you know it.

Sorry, but the way it was written insinuated that playing football is a right rather than a privilege.

Was the evidence so clear, that a Public defender would have gotten him off? NO ONE (or almost no one) on eGriz saw all the evidence.

Paolis article was well written, and considering PW's article had NATIONAL distribution, there is no question that to more than a few folks the use thugs was indeed racial. Of course that excludes the only two griz players ever charged with rape as being thugs...... So have no clue who the thugs were. Just one more very STUPID thing out of Pat Williams Mouth.

Thank you CrunchGriz!

GBB1... that definitely was not the intent of my post. I am sorry that you misinterpreted what I was trying to say. I was referring to JJ's right to an impartial trial - not his PRIVELAGE to represent the University of Montana football team. :thumb:
