Boy howdy. This from the ESPN article:

For the second straight year, the Grizzlies won the Big Sky tournament to earn an NCAA tournament bid, only to fall flat in their opener. They fell 73-49 to Wisconsin a year ago, shooting 38 percent for the game, including a 3-for-14 performance from star guard Will Cherry.

Cherry was hoping for a better performance this year, especially with this game being played less than an hour from his hometown of Oakland. But he scored just two points on 1-for-12 shooting.

The Grizzlies, playing without injured leading scorer Mathias Ward, shot just 20 percent (11-for-54), missed 27 of 31 3-pointers and had more turnovers (17) than made baskets.

So, Will Cherry is a combined 4-26 in his two tournament appearances. That ain't gonna excite all those NBA scouts.

Career 7-35 in NCAA tournament games, but no one was going to draft him for his offense anyways.

Are Montana recruits a little worried by what happened last night? Of course they are. But they are coming to Montana to maybe get into the tournament (and hopefully win a game). They aren't coming to win National Championships. We're going to be just fine, especially with such a young team. Even if we don't host the tournament next year, we'll beat Weber in either the semi-finals or final, and probably on their court ;-)

When you shoot 20% for the game and they shoot 52% you won't be in the game. Throw in 4-31 from "3" and you have a blowout. The "team" had a great year. Just picked a bad time to go ice cold. We had good looks, and made those shots all year. I'm still a fan.

First off, congrats on your season and the continued success that Tinkle has built with your team.

There were a a few frustrating things that stood out last night from the Griz team like fouling the player when he has already dunked the ball, passing up wide open shots from free throw line after a great entry pass, lack of urgency, loss of focus....it was a bad time to have a bad game against a very good team.

Syracuse is always tough even when they can't hit their shots, and last night they were hitting their shots.
At least it gives Tinkle a couple of ideas on how to improve.

Good post. These are some of my frustrations too. I was always taught that, if you are going to foul someone in the paint, they better not make the basket. In fact, the ball better not even get to the rim. Fouling someone after they dunk on you is just dumb, and lets the other team know how frustrated you are.

I am proud of our season, and hope Wayne stays for a LONG time. I don't think we will have him for much longer. However, the Griz showed a lack of maturity (or composure?) last night that I had hoped we were past. Looked like we resorted to playground ball a few times.

It was one of those nights. They couldn't miss and we couldn't do anything right. I'm pretty sure the sun came up this morning. Life goes on.

Let's not start making this game out to be the legend it wasn't. Syracuse only shot 52%. That is hardly "They couldn't miss". You did get the "we couldn't do anything right" part. The unfortunate part is once we were down 20-4 it was pretty much over. Other teams could have come back from that but rarely from the beginning of a game when we are having huge confidence problems already. We got even more intimidated and lost and it showed in our defense as well as offense. Syracuse was very beatable last night, had we made shots in the beginning the game dynamics would not have shifted so dramatically. As it was, it was over almost before it started.

...an it waz a huge mis-match..syracuse/montana...
...and there are two wayz to fix it..culturally or climatically...

I wake up to a new day! Can't wait to see the team next year. I'm hoping that Wayne remains with the team. Not sure why this team cannot be better next year than this?

We have 4 super sophs, and incoming freshman that potentially will be better than Cherry, in Dunn. A 7 footer with some real game experience at the end of the season. Wiley & Bradshaw will get more playing time PLUS Jamar & Coleman are the only seniors. And what if Marko and/or Billy Reader can find a home here again if academic issues are resolved.

Yep next year is looking good plus I'm betting the schedule will be much better. Davidson at home perhaps, the Hawaii game, and return of long time rival Idaho. Hopefully our conference schedule is fewer games next year so we can schedule some more non conference games.

Future is bright. Very bright......I'm a fan. I believe in my GRIZ. Go GRIZ!!!!

Now the optimist speaks. Yes a VERY good night for recruiting that post player we need. If I'm young and big, I see an opportunity to play immediately for a team that needs my talent. A team that has been to the dance 3 of 4 years. A team that is loaded with shooters. A team that will make me a star.

Yep a great night for recruiting me. Good players want to play. Good players want to win more than lose.

Something else you should keep in mind when it comes to basketball....We are in the BSC and never in the running to win a title like we are for football. Acting like its the end of the world when we get crushed by Syracuse is silly to say the least. We won the BSC reg season, won the tourney...and upset would have been awesome but in that game, that match up its not likely. To discount what this team did in the regular season and BSC tourney isn't fair. Im sure you were having a hell of a good time when we were hosting and winning our conf tourney.... :thumb: heres to you staying away from griz sports all together :clap:

gotta back Bgrizzled on this one. It's his money, he can do what he wants, the U of M has already spent it. I don't think he said he was going to quit supporting the basketball team. As far as the football decision, I watched em to the bitter end, but I don't blame anybody for not wanting to watch that fuck up of a coach pretend he knows which was is up. Disgusting, and very hard to watch. Besides, he and hammer got in a pissing match and both bought tickets for Grizkids or whatever the fuck it is....some real good came of it.

That's good if you want to back him....its your opinion and I respect that....just like its his opinion to say Nobody good wants to play for UM....or pick and choose when he wants to be a football fan...I respect your opinion but will never respect what bgrizzled says when he doesn't see his desired results. I know he doesn't care what I think, he expects greatness and titles...nothing else is good enuf, and that's just not realistic especially in regards to our basketball program

Enjoy what we achieved as a mid-major from the Big Sky, or chuck your Griz cap in the garbage and become a BIg East or ACC fan - cause if you are only satisfied with final-four level play, you will be miserable here. I am damn proud of what Tinkle accomplished, and the spirit of this team. I wouldn't trade the joy and energy of that Big Sky championship game for any first round win...

Yeah a HELL OF A GOOD TIME... I paid for... Like last year if the university doesn't want my money they can tell me that... But why do I continually get mail from them asking for my support?
