Seth played baseball at West Point. i have been to a number of events where he has spoken about the value of athletics and how it shaped him.

He played baseball in college for a few years at West Point. An avid sports fan. A
Big supporter of sports at UM. He knew the value of sports. I talked to him about this subject. I met him before he was UM president and was in contact with him all along, including in recent weeks. Great, smart and talented guy.

I know this is anecdotal evidence but it is one example. One of my children made it a requirement that the university they went to had a successful D1 NCAA hockey team. That narrowed their list considerably.

a lot of students enter college without having dedided on a major. i wouldn't be surprised if a few of them pick their college because they were always a big fan of the sports teams. according to a google search, estimates are that 20% to 50% of newly entering freshman don't yet have a major. it also says that estimates are that 10% to15% of students choose a university because of their sports teams.
 
You will notice from the list above that at these schools sports is not a top priority. It is academics. If you are going to build your university it is not thru sports. Seth Bodner may have played baseball and for Montana the president have an understanding of how important sports are to the public here. Davis does not put an emphasis on sports but academics, same as Calpoly Slo. Sure they have FCS sports teams but it's not considered a major part of their university. For Montana use Montana Tech as an example, excellent university but not for sports. You want to build your university you need donors. Donors with money.

Today at 3:30 is the public forum with Dr. Shinn located in the UC Ballroom. There's a livestream if you're out of town and want to watch. Unfortunately I have a meeting starting at 3 so I won't be able to watch, so hopefully somebody here can watch for us and report back. Does anyone know if it’s his job to lose, or if there will be similar visits from other finalists? Not trying to say anyone is entitled to know the secret inner workings of the Committee, just wondering if we have one finalist or multiple. Or, does that itself make me entitled?

I think for now he's the only finalist and if his visit today doesn't go well then they may bring somebody else in as well. That's likely to come up in the forum today!

If everything goes great, maybe they could fast-track it by having a special BOR meeting, but I don't know how that works or if they can even do it in this case. I do know in the past the BOR has had special sessions/meetings outside of their normally calendared 1x a month meeting.

One can also research Georgetown University and Patrick Ewing years to see the dramatic impact that the basketball team had on enrollment and exposure. Unfortunately, they have let all they built erode over time, whether it be because of changing vision or apathy. Success without continuous human and financial investment doesn’t happen.
