Gunnar Brekke Gatorade POY

If he'd rather be a cat than a Griz, then screw'em. I'm not gonna spend another minute talking about him unless I'm laughing at him while he's getting rolled by the Griz for years to come. :thumb:

go ahead Mr. miss-the-point cat, try to find a quote where I said 'jack or carpenter being named the top fcs recruit in the nation' .

I'll try to make it simple and straightforward; I respect MSU but you can do the research over the last 15-20 years and find out that MSU quarterbacks other than T.Lulay and DMac have a very low winning percentage against UM.

not missing any point PGM. you said what wbtfg said was similar to what you've been hearing forever. i pointed out that while that is true it goes both ways which you don't seem to believe. my point is that it doesn't matter at all. no bobcat team has had much success against the griz in like 30 years. does that mean anything currently? it didn't stop us from beating you this year. the griz hammered everyone including the cats for two decades. did that help you this season?

i understand in light of where the griz currently are at why 15-20 years ago is still relevent. my point is i don't think it matters. this isn't to say this qb we are discussing is going to be the best to ever play for the cats. he might not work out at all. but if he doesn't....it will have nothing to do with travis lulay, denarius mcghee, or winning percentage against the griz the last 20 years, or anything else.....

and while we're splitting hairs....i never said YOU said that about jack or carpenter. just said if you heard similar things to what wbtfg said...maybe someone was saying that.

Actually, I think you are missing the point. You are right that whether a new qb is going to be great for the Cats after the Irish lad is done, has little or nothing to do with what happened after Lulay was done. However, what is the same or similar are the Cats fans, or some Cat fans, who underestimated Lulay's leaving and were confident that new qb's would be just as good, or about as good. Now, some Cat fans, including probably some of those who were around in the Lulay era, are now saying the same thing, i.e. the Cats won't miss the Irish lad much and will replace him with a new great qb. Great qb's are very hard to replace, especially the special ones who have taken their team to a higher level.

I really don't remember people saying that we wouldn't miss a beat when Lulay graduated, however Carpenter and Rolovitch did do pretty well, they got us an FBS win, playoff appearance including a home PO win.Next years MSU Sr class is a strong one, but one big difference between 2014 and when Lulay graduated is the rest of the team, Our coaches have done a great job of improving our recruiting across the board. I am figuring that a post McGhee MSU team will have some bumps, but we now have a strong enough program as a whole that we wont be dropping back to 6-5 or god forbid  5-6. Granted things can happen as fizz fan can see from your own experiences this year, but if everything else remains constant then the loss of McGhee and his classmates will not be the end of the Cats.

I for one thought that MSU would take a step back post-Lulay, but even though Griz fans won't remember it this way (probably many Cat fans as well) MSU's best season during Kramer's tenure was in 2006, after Lulay was gone. Likewise, Tennessee finally won a NC with Tee Martin at QB, the year after Manning's final season. I'll bet most Griz fans expected them to take a step back after Dave D. graduated, but they made it back to the NC game the next season with Ah Yat at QB. Edwards won a NC for them, and nobody would confuse him with Joe Montana or Tom Brady. The point being that many teams have been very successful, without necessarily having an All-American at QB, and I believe that MSU will be plenty good enough going forward to survive the loss of D-Mac quite nicely.

I wish him the best... too bad the kid will never what it's like to win more than 1 playoff game in a single season...

Let's face it, some kids just can't handle success. Why else would you go to west dakota state?

Good luck with that. :ugeek: :ugeek:

If it makes you Griz fans feel any better....the RB from Billings Senior is still uncomitted. Saraceni is bigger than Brekke....faster...[he finished 1st in AA 100meter.....I believe Brekke took 3rd] Two coaches that have seen him that I know (I haven't seen him play) have said he is a better....who knows???
He did play for a team that got a lot less ink than Brekke's....(that's just about everyone, though  )

I think if Delaney or Ash drove down I-15 out of LA and threw a dead cat out the window it would hit a dozen 5'10 180 l.b. running backs.....this is not intended for smack against the Brekke kid at all...but there are a lot of tough, fast, quick players in CA & AZ. Hell.....the RB from NAU was overlooked by just about everybody...and he was far and away the best back in the BSC!!! I am all for signing home grown talent when it actually exists....but it's a #'s game.....and they favor CA, AZ, and TX. This will probably offend fans from the CATS & GRIZ but coaches would rather win football games than PR contests of who has the most Montana players.!!!!

Excellent post Teton! I think Brekke is a great talent. He did so many things well at Capital. I think he translates better to the slot or defensive backfield at the next level, but they said that about Chase Reynolds as well. Time will tell. I hope he has a healthy and productive career regardless of where he goes. I have had many people that have watched a lot of AA ball that Saraceni out of Senior tranlates better to the next level due to his speed. AA 100 and 200 champion as a Junior last year. Might have had more press this year, but had a shoulder injury and missed the last few games this year. Brekke wins in the change of direction game. He can stop on a dime and give you 9 cents change, but Saraceni has a better chance of outrunning the defensive backs when he breaks one. Heard someone liken him to Lex.
Are we even recruiting Saraceni? I don't see him on any of the lists.

Better than not making the playoffs and having no idea who your coaching staff will be. ;)

Griz track team offered him a full ride. Heard he is considering Tech, Carroll and Western for football.

If an athlete from any other sport plays football, it still counts against the football scholarships.
By the way, I don't believe people are making a a big deal of him possibly being Cat, and not a GRIZ

I think it's because the Griz and Cats aren't recruiting him as hard as come other players in state. Maybe it't the shoulder injury, but I've been told he is being considered more of a Frontier Conference type running back and not FCS. Just what I've been told

it may be that brekke wants to play running back and ash offered on that basis,,msu graduates two this year and with the stable of young running backs at missoula, brekke might figure he has a better chance to play at msu and play much earlier...just a thought...

IF... he i going to msu as a RB... this is a huge mistake. I watched him live several times and on tape for many games. His best position is at CB/S! I was not/am not as high on Brekke as most, he is a great kid and works hard, but I dont think he is the greatest football player.

IE... lets look at the last three Gatorade players. he is third by a long ways...

Just my two cents...

Great jobs, better economy, higher salaries, better housing market, etc, to name a few. The Eastern Idaho Panhandle is in a sorry state of affairs for anyone wishing to make more than $10.00 an hour with a graduate degree in creative dance working at The Break. Some of us have higher standards off the football field as well.

you're right he's not the greatest football player. that honor goes to jerry rice, lawrence taylor, jim brown, and several others we could argue about until the sun comes up.

look, the kid dumped us for m.s.u. no need to try to diminish his ability. it happens to everyone. m.s.u. just happens to have as much going for it right now as we do and like all of us the kid recognized it. the sooner all these investigations and j.j.'s trial are over the better. i'm positive those things made a difference to the kid. the rivalry and the b.s.c. have changed. we aren't going to be beating m.s.u. for recruits year-in and year-out like we used to. their facility and fan base has shrunk the gap considerably. we aren't going to be winning 12 straight b.s.c. championships and going to the playoffs 13 times in a row. that was a once in a lifetime run. we and the rest of the top teams in the league will be doing good to win it every other year or so. yeah, i miss the good old days too, but i'm looking forward to playing teams that have quality facilities, good fans and players and being on a more even field. i'm hoping to play in front of 10 to 20 thousand on the road a few times a year, instead of 5 to 7 thousand. i'm counting on ewu, cal poly, davis, psu, wsu, und, and nau to make that a reality.

Don't think so. He reportedly wants to be a Physical Therapist. Since UM has the only PT school in the state, this is likely football related. Granted the PT school is now a DPT degree and requires an undergraduate degree in order to apply he could get that anywhere. But, if he plans to go to PT school in Missoula, it usually helps to get to know the PT instructors as advisors and instructors. But all of that was 20 years ago when I got my PT degree, so I have no idea how it works now.

I don't have a real big problem with him not honoring his commitment since Coaches do it all the time. Why would anyone expect an 18 year old kid to?

i beleive "getgrizzy" has thought this out pretty well, imo...it is difficult to accept, though....
