Griz Soccer Coach Fired...

Yeah after reading the article fully I hope there wasnt more than reported so far but if there was the players involved deserve more to be done. If not then the program needs to find a new coach and help be these girls be successful. I do think that "firing" rather than "resignation" should be the dominant term in relation to his status with the UM. Very disappointed, very embarrassing for the UM. I bet the players are even more disappointed. He took away some pride from them.

They will win it back next year.

Evidently fired him, but spun it as a mutual decision. Only reason I can assume they did it was to avoid having ex coach pull a Kramer and sue for harming reputation. I understand somewhat, but not handled correctly if my perception of the time line of events is correct.

Didn't Engstrom resign after he was asked to resign? Might have been the same in this situation.

He better count himself lucky one of those player's dad's did not kick his ass.

No kidding. Wow!

Or Brock Coyle himself! His sister is a star freshman. Led the team in like every offensive category.
Or football players, there’s a lot of them dating soccer players. To name a few, Jeremy Calhoun, Colin Bingham, Keenan Curran and others that I can’t think of at this time.

Not the day it should have been Haslam & athletic department.

Should have suspended the coach pending an investigation. If facts warranted, fire the guy for cause. Not renewing and initially allowing the scumbag to save face won’t play well on campus. You’ve got to come down squarely on the side of the student atheletes here because you haven’t gotten to the bottom of inappropriate as yet. Why did anyone believe the story would hold up to any kind of scrutiny? I can understand the reasoning, even empathize, but this one was mishandled badly.

"Haslam said the results of the climate survey issued by the Title IX office did not play into the decision to ask Plakorus to resign."

"Both players stressed that not all team members felt that way about their coach."

We will see who they bring in as coach, and how the team does next year. I wonder if some of the players won't like losing their fairly successful coach? If some players disagree with some of the complaints, I wonder it will cause some team disagreement or dissension.

I don't judge Haslam harshly or poorly for this. It looks like the key aspect of the request for resignation, or non-renewal, was the multiple texts to the escort services in Las Vegas while on UM travel. In this day and age, and atmosphere, I can see this leading to termination. Also, there appears to be at least some of questionable stuff with texting and other stuff with the girls. Too bad for everyone, but I'm not going to get too excited about what Haslam did and how he did.

Given some of the rumors about Gee, I'm not sure she's the one to be judging people in this context.

In the Missoulian article, it says that TWO players said that. I.e. the 2 that spoke anonymously to the Missoulian. The article also that the the two said that all players didn't agree with them.

So, the coach is asked to resign, or fired, because of the texting of escort services, and not for the Title IX survey, and these two say that the characterization as a resignation and not the underlying reasons (which Haslam said was the escort texting) was "painful"? Huh?

I'd be curious to know what the rest of the team thinks. Again, I'm fine with the guy being gone.

Yeah this statement sticks with me a little bit. Feel bad for them. I think the players that came forward did the right thing by acknowledging that not all players felt the same. Though if what was reported is accurate I dont understand how anyone can support his behavior. I am sure very few are privy to all of the information and possibly not all of the players are aware of what was really going on. I have to admit I dont know anymore than we have seen reported.

I’m just gonna be perfectly honest with you, I just don’t think the Haslam spin job on this is that big of a deal. At the end of the day, they fired the dirt bag and that’s all that matters. Call it whatever you want, stepping down, resignation, firing, whatever. Almost any time you hear any of those 3 terms, it means something bad has happened like a coach is not performing or there were some off the field issues. Now I do think they probably should’ve done a little bit better job informing the players, but at the end of the day they did the right thing by getting rid of him so let’s move on.

From a practical point of view, I assume nothing has been legally decided, so, whatever 'they' have decided to call it, fired, resigned, not renewed, whatever...... So be it. He is gone. Move on. And it is SOCCER, not football! Please move the thread. :D

Coach:

We have a saying that goes something along the lines of, "Once a GRIZ always a GRIZ".

Well, you can go F___ yourself. You were never a GRIZ.

As for Kent, I will bet you $10,000,000 that UM's legal and HR departments wanted to call it a resignation. Believe me, it will save everyone a lot of time and money, although it does suck shit.

Gone---the more important item. Just behind THE MOST important item---the protection and safety of these young women.

I started a thread about this topic a couple of days ago. Maybe these two threads can be merged perhaps?: https://egriz.com/grizboard/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=79194

Agree with you 100%. Every employer, including the State of Montana, looks for ways to resolve an employment separation in a manner which ends the relationship without giving rise subsequent claims or litigation. With the competing constitutional interests of privacy vs. right to know, this process is tougher for government employers to navigate. The guy is gone and rightfully so. The rest is, as they say, de minimis.
