Remember Mike Shelton? He was one of the other Griz with Colman the night they broke into that house and pistol whipped a man before jolting him with a stun gun and binding a woman with duct tape?
Maybe you forgot. It was seven years ago. Shelton was a transfer from Arizona. He had been committed of a crime there, too, but he wasn’t one of those “lower qualifiers” like Playerep says Eastern Washington uses to gain unfair advantage. Shelton was a upper qualifier thug. Either Hauck never bothered to check Shelton’s criminal record, or didn’t care. Either way, Shelton skipped off to Montana to play football without completing his sentence in Arizona.
Hauck didn't stonewall the press over the pistol whipping, stun gunning, burglarizing and kidnapping. He gave it to them straight.
He said (according to ESPN): “We talk about off the field conduct on a weekly basis, and have for the past five years. Whether or not the players choose to listen is up to them.”
And that’s cool because you can’t name a coach that hasn’t had a player(s) arrested. All a guy can do is bring them to town and coach ‘em up. I'm sure Missoula was comforted by Bobby Hauck's handling of the off the field conduct stuff. He even had a bonus clause in his contract if his players stayed out of trouble. I'm sure he got it.
Yeah, the more I think about it, the UM job is Bobby Hauck’s for the taking.
