2017 Vim's Montana High School Football Recruiting List

So are instate verbals pretty much done while we wait for Feb 1?

Luke Poetzl would still be a very good get. A big bodied kid who was the best offensive lineman in Montana this year, in my opinion. However, he is only about 230-240 lbs. as of right now. I think he could make a great strong-side defensive end playing at like 6'5, 260-270 lbs. Has good tape.

Without you, good tape is pretty much all we have to go on.

Well good tape and the fact I've seen him play live a few times.

Other than Luke, there are serveral potential PWO kids who have yet to sign anywhere (or at least anywhere I know of) who are good developmental prospects. Here are four from each class in Montana:

AA - Blade Miller (Billings West) - 5'10", 250 lbs. - DT

Bryson Deming's center at Billings West. Plays with great leverage (his size helps) and he has a great "get-off" for a 250 lb. kid. Might not be tall enough but I liked what I saw at DT on tape.

A - Nate McGree (Butte Central) - 6'3", 215 lbs. - WR/OLB/S

Was a steady player for the Maroons over the past two seasons, earning All-State at safety his junior and senior seasons. A good track athlete, especially in triple jump. Has good springs. Speed is likely an issue but he plays physical. Brother plays at Carroll and he likely hasn't signed there because he is deciding on PWO offers from either in-state school or a full-ride to Carroll.

B - Cantor Coverdell (Fairfield) - 6'2", 190 lbs. - WR

Not as big as Nate McGree but similar playing style. Has great hands and deceptive speed at WR. A state champion triple jumper for Fairfield. Likely will play in the Frontier but there are tools to develop here.

C - Ty Morgan (Ennis) - 6'4", 240 lbs. - DE/DL

In order to be considered as a legitimate prospect at the Class C level, you have to dominate inferior opposition and that is just what Ty did every game for the State Champion Mustangs. He is a raw player from a technique standpoint but he is a long, strong, coordinated athlete who plays with a high motor all game. Every Frontier school wants him but MSU is trying to convince him to be a PWO. Ty is a ranch kid. Fun player to watch when he gets going.

Anything on Dawsen Berg? Big kid from Billings I know he is a Big Griz fan.

Signed with Montana Tech. Never got an offer from Griz or Cats. Was a second team all-state center behind first-teamers Blade Miller of Billings West and Kellen Bemis of Glacier. Dawsen did not have the best senior season as some hoped for as he just didn't dominate in comparison to his size. I felt he had a better junior year (even though he was injured). He failed to get selected to the Shrine Game roster as a selection or an alternate. I still think he could make a good road-grading offensive guard at the FCS level but he will follow in his brother's footsteps at Montana Tech.

Well take Nate off the list as he officially signed with Carroll last night.

So here is another Class A player:

Braxton Reiten (Columbia Falls) - 5'9", 170 lbs. - WR and Return Specalist

Braxton piled up 1,303 yards on 74 catches along with 22 receiving touchdowns his senior season for the Wildcats. He is also an excellent returner. Would fit right into the Z-receiver position in the Stitt offense.

I usually don't comment on these types of things, but I feel very strongly that there are some good old Montana kids that are being overlooked this year. Several of the kids listed on the top 50 list will give something to the Griz that lots of "star" recruits can't give and that is heart. These kids grow up rooting for either the Cats or the Griz. Our MT kids may not have the stats that people are drawn to. The Griz or Cats for that matter, shouldn't hesitate to take the top 2 or 3 kids from the AA, A, and B state champ teams each year. Of course there are always some studs from the Class C. Those state champ teams have kids that know how to compete. The AA always seems to get represented well but lets not overlook teams like Dillon. They played in the chipper the last 3 years. Won 2 of the 3. Many of those kids played in all 3 games. Either school in Montana should be lucky to have a couple kids out of that program. I know Andersen is going to the Cats but where is Fitzgerald going? His family is Griz through and through? Looks like Eric James of Dillon is going to Tech. Class C Ennis also has a few studs that could go and play up. Lets not forget these types of programs are where the Reynolds, Marianis, Crebos and Haucks came from. They may not have looked the part on paper but boy could they play football.

Other good ones from Montana....anyone have insight?
Canton Coverdell and Chandler Allen from Fairfield Good Class B program; always competitive; both know how to win

Patrick O'Connell from Kalispell Good size; good instinct; comes from good program so has the tools

RJ Fitzgerald from Dillon Played in 3 state championship games; comes from a great hs program; tough and hard nosed

Knack, Morgan and McKitrick all had big roles in Ennis; good athletes

Mathews is a BEAST. He is the next Buss, only better.
Well let's not get ahead of ourselves quite yet. Buss just had 20 TFL as a sophomore...

I am well aware of Buss, before he arrived at Missoula, I predicted he would be an All-American.

Well aware of Coverdell and Allen from Fairfield. Cantor is a triple jump champion and an excellent WR with good size at 6'2", 190 lbs. Was also a good OLB. Chandler Allen is a 6'2", 200 lbs. playing both TE and DE but I think he is more of a hybrid DE/OLB. Needs to add weight but speed is not an issue. Chandler was always one of the best football players on the field every time the Eagles played a game. His performance against Missoula Loyola in the semifinals this year was one of the best in the state in my opinion.

Patrick had a solid senior campaign for Glacier, earning Western AA Defensive Player of the Year at MLB along with being 1st team All-State. He has good size at about 6'1", 210 lbs. but I'm unsure of his speed to make it at the FCS level. Would be definitely worth a shot at the FCS level.

RJ is your typical shorter MLB who plays big and never takes a play off. He is a two-time All-State MLB at about 5'10", 215 lbs. Also a decent FB on offense. Again, speed might be the biggest thing holding him back. Could be worth a look as a PWO.

Jake Knack is this year's Chad Newell. He isn't quite as big as Chad was in high school but Jake isn't small at 6'2", 195 lbs. He runs angry and has good acceleration when in the open field. Has good hands out of the backfield. Could develop as either a RB or OLB. Not quite sure he is twitchy enough of an athlete to make it at the FCS level but we talk about about kids not having this or that then Chad Newell happens. Jake is a tough SOB.

Everyone talks about McKenzie Holt being the diamond in the rough of this class but I think Ty Morgan deserves to be in that conversation. He is about 6'5", 240 lbs. and he throws inferior competition around like rag dolls at the Class C level. He played OT and DE and the Mustangs pulled him a lot on offense. When you watch Ty running in the open field, you get to see how truly athletic the big kid is. Then on defense, he has a decent first step and uses his long arms to his advantage. I think their is a boatload of potential with Ty and some football team is going to get a country-strong kid who plays his butt off every snap. He also is a state champion shot put and discus thrower.

Gavin McKitrick was part of a high-powered Ennis team and he was a productive WR/S but I think his ceiling is at the NAIA level.

thanks vim for the run down,,,very interesting.....in your opinion vim, what would be wrong with montana or msu offering walk on status for most of these folks and if they earn scholarships so much the better.....are there rules for how many can walk on etc ? just askin.....seems like there may be lots of raw talented kids out there in a, b, c, land.....
