I think indoctrination as a concept often doesn’t give young people enough credit. Like saying they’re too dumb to make up their own minds. Sometimes, (not saying you) the people most worried about indoctrination get mixed up when you ask, “You believed everything you were told in college?” Again, not saying you, it’s just something I’ve noticed.

I have a relative who didn’t want her kid going to a certain elite college for fear of indoctrination. Usually works itself out because kids who are very susceptible to that tend not to have the critical thinking skills required to get in there in the first place. 🤷‍♂️
 
What are his qualifications as far as ties to UM? Why would we hire him when Griz national champion David Sirmon is available? We need someone who has seen the value that strong athletics can bring to UM.

College also teaches you critical thinking skills and I think the "indoctrination" accusation is really pushback against that in most cases, because it goes directly against the conservative ethos that children are your property who must unquestioningly obey you, rather than people with their own opinions and desires. When you raise a kid like that and then send them away from home for the first time and they come back suddenly questioning some of your beliefs, that feeling of loss of control must be jarring.

Like if a family of flat earthers sent their son off to college and he returned for spring break with a globe and some wacky ideas about orbital mechanics, sure, they'd also start screaming about indoctrination and brainwashing. But do we need to listen to these people?

Seems like UM found a good candidate. If some idiot inbreds in Idaho don't approve of him, that's just more of an endorsement.

Dr. Sirmon is an excellent candidate with deep ties to UM and UM athletics.

However, Dr. Shinn is more qualified as he is already operating as the interim president of a regional university with 27,000+ students that has seen a 25% increase in enrollment over the last 10 years (Covid really impacted BSU's enrollment and they didn't fully recover pre-Covid numbers until 23-24). Undergraduate enrollment has increased every year over the last ten years.

He's also the interim president of a future PAC-12 school athletic program with a $60 million budget that is well respected across most of the U.S. Dr. Shinn is by far the better candidate and he is the tranformative leader UM needs at this moment to create a renaissance and catapult the trajectory of the university.

If you want UM to be the future and UM athletics, including Griz football, ready for the future, Dr. Shinn is the best person for the position.

The way I see it, the older we get, the more we want things the way they were when we were younger. It's been that way for most of history. I remember my grandfather telling me he pined for the days every man had to wear a suit and hat and every women, a dress, to go out in public. Thankfully, those days are behind us and we can wear Wrangler jeans when we go to work.
