Junior...

My sources are telling me the 49ers are cutting Skyy Moore and keeping Junior Bergen. This follows the current special teams regime previous moves of cutting guys in Wishnowsky and Pepper who the fans thought were better than the guys they have personal connections to that they signed. If the special teams does not go well 49ers fans will be mad.
 
While it sounds like Junior is making the initial 53 man roster, they might sign someone cut from another team for competition now and he will have a competition with Jacob Cowing for the return spot when Cowing returns from injury in about 6 weeks.

They cut Mitch Wishnowski and Taybor Pepper who have both been solid special teams players on the 49ers for awhile. The only position they aren’t changing up on special teams is Jake Moodey who was the guy the fans thought was the one to cut out of the group. We’ll see what happens, I want it to go well for Boyer and Colt Anderson with their Griz connections but their moves of releasing fan favorites and someone now fans saw a lot of potential in for guys that they have personal connections to is going to blow up in their face if it doesn’t go well.

Wishnowski got hurt last year and his replacement was fine, they weren't gonna pay $2M a year for an oft-injured punter that wasn't that good.

The whole Taybor Pepper - Deebo Samuel thing last year probably had a lot to do with Pepper getting released.

Wishnowski’s replacement is 39 years old and has been washed for awhile.

He was better than Wishnowski last season, costs half as much, and played the whole season without going on IR. They replaced a bad, injured punter with a serviceable one, it's not really any deeper than that.

To put it mildly, this is hogwash. If Bergen makes this team I will be delighted but stunned. Your sources go against everything I have heard about Bergen.That he is too slow and too small to do anything but return kicks—and he blew that chance when he muffed the punt v the Chargers. Sky Moore is the punt returner. My wish? Bergen makes the Practise squad.
 
Moore has no hands. “Saturday’s outing against the Los Angeles Chargers wasn't the prettiest, with Moore dropping his first two targets. He caught three of six targets for 19 yards on 16 routes run. Most of his issues were excused by having just one practice in the 49ers offense. Moore admitted after the game that he was "confused out there a little bit." Kyle Shanahan's offense takes more than one practice to master.”

This is the essence of the NFL - remember it's a business. Cheaper, available, and, better, or at the very least, the same production.
 
The 49ers might have gotten cold feet on Skyy Moore with him going to the media about how bad it was in Kansas City and are trying to find a trade partner before releasing him which is what is causing this to come down to the last minute.
