I don't think it is fully about amount of people at games, or ratings at the time. Sac State is in a Metro area of 2.4 million people. Sac State enrollment is around 31,000 students. The market is WAY more important than the amount of people in the stands.

My main reason that MSU and UM should move up has nothing to do with football. It's Basketball... The Mountain West can get 2-3 teams into March Madness, and a much better chance of getting a win in it if you make it (you aren't going to be a 14-16 seed). It would greatly improve both Men's and Women's programs. This is JUST MY OPINION....
Okay, but does market size really matter if no one watches or goes to games?

I think about the Southlake Union Trolly in Seattle. The city pumped tens of millions of dollars into it for years. And it should have been wildly successful: there's like a billion Amazon employees alone within 2 blocks of the thing. But it was a complete failure and the city finally pulled the plug on it. Promise and expectation don't pay the power bill. At some point people have to care

That said, I agree 10,000% with your post concerning basketball

That went completely over your head didn’t it? Especially the part that raising more revenue through student fees is going to push right now our budget between $50-55 million. What is Montana’s again? That’s right around $25 million.

If you know anything about the Sacramento area, because of the Kings, this region wants nothing but highest level sports. The reason they don’t come out for Montana and Idaho is: you don’t move the needle in Big Sky/FCS.

I mean hell, look at someone like Kennesaw State. They are in the Atlanta metro. Just started football 10 years ago. FCS doesn’t sell there! It’s why Georgia State also went FBS as immediately as they could.

Just today your land-grant school announced their head count for Fall 2024 is the largest enrollment of any university in the history of the State of Montana? Where is the UM toiling at these days?

Face it, until the State of Montana grows a very significant metropolis in one of its two college towns, you both will be still minor players in the grand scheme of things. And judging by the growth of Bozeman, it will be MSU that gets the nod over UM first when they finally decide to have 16 or more sports.

But keep on with the “nice” or “cute” comments. It’s obvious the UM doesn’t teaching a critical thinking skills course amongst its offerings. ☕
It's also true that Sac St doesn't produce top college football or basketball teams. And SS makes zero noise in the FCS playoffs. SS either doesn't make the playoffs or chokes. Talk about not moving the needle.

I mean, you come on our forum and try to premote your university in hopes that someone from some FBS conference things you are worth having.Try this one on for size there pal. Your athletics suck and no one cares about you.

What is it about you people in Montana? Lack of melatonin to the brains because it snows 8 months out of the year? Ok our athletes suck. We only won the most Big Sky titles in 2023-24 with 7 (reg season and tournament). We just had a run of three straight football titles. You all had a 30+ year head start in the Big Sky and yet we are closing in with close to 100 Big Sky titles in all sports. But we still suck all around 🙄 GTFO with that nonsense. Granted we haven’t won a mens hoops title but we just did finally win a womens hoops one two years ago.

Face it, Sac’s 6 county population at 3600 sq miles is 2.5 times the entire population of the State of Montana. Your state will always be a minor player for everything in this country!

Since when did FCS playoff success become a requirement to move up to FBS? I’m looking at Kennesaw State, Texas State, Missouri State, Jacksonville State, Georgia State…hell even FIU and FAU before them! Get out of here with that nonsense.

I read the first line of each of your posts and then realize that quite frankly, I don't really give a shit what you think.

This is a football forum. Montana is 21-4 vs SacSt, routinely doubles their football attendance, and has been to the FCS national championship game 8 times. SacST has never come close. Anyone in FCS circles knows Montana, SacSt not so much.

Smh whenever I hear somebody say they would rather play a Dakota school every single year in the same suburb in Texas (like a Stephen King book) rather than play a bigger, new school in a new city each year.
Do these people go on the same vacation to the same place and do the same thing every year? Seriously, sounds like being trapped in an endless nightmare.
You’ve obviously never been to Sparks, Nevada, my friend.

FWIW Oldn doesn't really represent GRIZ fans.

That said, no one has answered my question about market size: does it matter if no one gives a shit? Yes, the "market" in Montana is comparatively tiny. And yet between the two universities, nearly 50,000 people show up each and every weekend. Hell, it would take sac plus 3 fbs cali programs to equal those numbers.

You have a lot of people, none of whom gives a shit. How is that attractive to the MWC?

Sac nearly had to host the bsc basketball tournament in a yoga studio because your facility holds 880 people.

Yes, you have a large television market. In which no one turns on a Sac game. Market size doesn't matter. Market SHARE matters.

UM would have zero difficulty adding sports to be compliant in 2 years. We already have the best facilities in the bsc, and our facilities would be at the top of the MWC beginning day one
What city does Sac State

Does it matter that 2,385,000 people in the metro area don’t give 1 or even 2 shits about Sac State?

Serious question.

What’s it about you suck state people that makes you come to a lowly, backwater site like eGriz to express you point of view? That’s probably because your own shitty site hasn’t had a post since last December? Stinger’s up???

Lots of D—2 Energy, Kem!

This is how losers talk…

I was talking about your team, not talking about moving up.

1) Snow and long nights would increase melatonin production, not inhibit it. If you're going to try being snarky, at least get your basic facts straight.
2) I don't think anyone here cares if Sac St ends up going to the MWC, and I don't mean that as an insult. We just don't really care. Either UM gets an invite, which would make a lot of people happy, none of us get an invite, or Sac St (and maybe Davis) get an invite, and the remaining Big Sky is something we all like better anyways (the Cali schools and PSU just don't fit, and their additions have been a common source of grumbling here).
3) Other than that, I just don't get what you get out of making long-winded posts talking up your school's MWC chances on another school's forum. At all. It's strange. Are you doing that with every Big Sky school? Go chat with your Sac buddies.

Maybe it was the second thread - I'm getting the two mixed up - but yes, it does matter, because advertisers are often sold on potential viewers, which is basically market size.
