It happenin

Sac has a large market, but does anyone care about them? Missoula is obviously a smaller market, but we draw 15,000 more per game, and I can guarantee our television ratings are higher. Sac is in a good position already fielding the required sports, but their facilities lack. And over the two year period for transition, it would not be difficult for UM to field the required programs.
I don't think it is fully about amount of people at games, or ratings at the time. Sac State is in a Metro area of 2.4 million people. Sac State enrollment is around 31,000 students. The market is WAY more important than the amount of people in the stands.

My main reason that MSU and UM should move up has nothing to do with football. It's Basketball... The Mountain West can get 2-3 teams into March Madness, and a much better chance of getting a win in it if you make it (you aren't going to be a 14-16 seed). It would greatly improve both Men's and Women's programs. This is JUST MY OPINION....

I get what you're saying, but that's kind of the line of thinking that made the BSC weaker. Fullerton wanted to go after the "big markets" for conference membership, but very few fans in said big markets cared about the sports in those markets.

Now, if SAC moved to the PAC or MWC, maybe they would get more fan interest, but who knows? For example: You could start a minor league baseball team in Manhattan, NY. Huge market, but you'd probably get more interest in Manhattan, KS or even Manhattan, MT. Being the biggest show "in town" is valuable.

Agree about the basketball point, 100%.

Yep - it is a bit "funny money" but TV deals are built on potential viewers, not actual amount of viewers. Annoying, but most important to the ad agencies the partner is pitching to is the potential number that can see the ad, not the actual amount that do.

On the bolded part above, I agree, but that isn't how it is looked at all the time... Example. When I was actually in radio (and radio was a thing) nobody talked about the actual ratings of the radio stations in markets as much as they talked about the market size... IE "The Portland Oregon market is the ______ biggest market in the country. They didn't say "Even though nobody there listens to radio" that didn't matter, you base your Ad rates on the size of the market... And THANK GOD they did, or I would have been fired from "The Rose" WAY sooner than I was back in 2000. But MAN, did the Acropolis Steakhouse have great Food specials. (among other things....)

(This didn’t seem like the right day to see an Acrop reference get dropped on a Montana-based message board, but here we are.)

Anyway, what the Mountain West HAS to have is a combination of markets that can deliver and can show potential. The key to any of this- in this era of college football- media payout is everything if you want to be competitive. It was disheartening to hear about a pundit today saying the remaining MWC schools have zero TV value. Here I’m thinking the MWC should have double the deal of Conference USA ($800K per school per year), and I want to know “how zero” networks are feeling about the conference. Yet, for those who may not understand some of my comments, I harbor the feeling that networks are trying to reduce the number of mouths they feed.

If UM gets an invitation will the administration and BOR try to make it work or throw the invitation in the circular file?

Heck lets go pluck a few MW teams and start our own conference.Maybe we call it the Big Sky or Rocky Mountain conference.Let the MW disolve. Air Force is gone. Truefully the leftovers are not worth the join except maybe Wyoming just because heck they are cowboys.I mean the MW had it's chance let them pound salt.

You realize we have an agreement to play home games at the golden1center, an NBA arena just a couple miles from campus?

And that the nest yoga studio was retired last year and the team will be in a 3,500 seat stop gap facility during the transition on campus?
Lame. Just lame.

I don’t see UM taking the initiative to put it together, but your idea has merit, especially if it included Wyoming.

Not to pile on what has been posted about our FBS pursuit, but a big piece of getting an invite is not just a marketing pitch but actually getting things done to show you mean business...essentially putting your money where your mouth is. Our new President was at San Diego State when they built Snapdragon Stadium so he saw first hand what it took to get it done (and knows people that can) and no doubt heard the rumors of SDSU to the Pac-12 well before their invite went through. That gave him time to make moves in preparation for this pitch to the MW (I'm not buying the Pac being a feasible outcome for us).

Since coming on-board last academic year, he pilfered a bucket of money to convert rec center space (the Well) into a makeshift venue for men's and women's hoops. This is by no means a substitute for an on-campus events center but it's a step in the right direction and more importantly something to sell the MW brass that he means business in addressing our deficient facilities. Between the Well and with Golden1 Center available for use to placate the remaining hoops powers of the MW, I'm not worried about the hoops facility situation wrt our pursuit of an FBS invite.

With yesterday's announcement to raise student fees to fund athletics, athletic facilities, and other on campus programs (marching band) to FBS levels, he now has another feather in the cap to sell MW brass on our intentions and commitment to being an FBS caliber athletic department. As posted, we already hit FBS minimums for sport composition so we would immediately plug that hole for the MW.

Having state and local politicians, local businesses and prominent alums making a marketing push for FBS status and a new football stadium (no doubt working hand in hand with Sac State admin behind the scenes) is another positive. Nothing would be bigger than actual shovels in the ground, but with the rumors of more MW defections on the horizon, the MW isn't in a position to be too picky if they want to remain an FBS conference. If a new stadium doesn't happen, better ancillary facilities for Hornet Stadium (21.1k capacity, we had 23k there last Causeway) and some erector set endzone seating would make it comparable to what Nevada has.

Lastly, market. Markets matter. The MW TV deal will be in shambles when the defectors are gone so the MW will need all the markets they can get their hands on to cobble together significant TV monies to placate current/future membership. Sac State checks that box over every Big Sky member contemplating the FBS move. Sac State elevating to the FBS level would only allow our market presence to increase so there is potential there. There is also a recruiting angle to the market that hasn't been stated yet and no doubt the MW members would like to replace their trips to CA that they just lost.

Sac State is the most valuable FCS university for the MW, 2nd only to current FBS members targeted for poaching. There are other quality FCS universities for consideration, but none that check the boxes that we do.

That's nice but the fact is you are not in the Mountain West. You are not in any mountain and your not in any Big Sky either.Maybe you could go get UCDAVIS and Calpoly.Form a new conference and call it the California conference.Personally, we would not miss you.

Montana is in no position to start a FBS conference. The only avenue is to be invited to an existing FBS conference.
What conference would you suggest? certainly not the MW ?

That went completely over your head didn’t it? Especially the part that raising more revenue through student fees is going to push right now our budget between $50-55 million. What is Montana’s again? That’s right around $25 million.

If you know anything about the Sacramento area, because of the Kings, this region wants nothing but highest level sports. The reason they don’t come out for Montana and Idaho is: you don’t move the needle in Big Sky/FCS.

I mean hell, look at someone like Kennesaw State. They are in the Atlanta metro. Just started football 10 years ago. FCS doesn’t sell there! It’s why Georgia State also went FBS as immediately as they could.

Just today your land-grant school announced their head count for Fall 2024 is the largest enrollment of any university in the history of the State of Montana? Where is the UM toiling at these days?

Face it, until the State of Montana grows a very significant metropolis in one of its two college towns, you both will be still minor players in the grand scheme of things. And judging by the growth of Bozeman, it will be MSU that gets the nod over UM first when they finally decide to have 16 or more sports.

But keep on with the “nice” or “cute” comments. It’s obvious the UM doesn’t teaching a critical thinking skills course amongst its offerings. ☕
