UM Athletics seriously can't afford to get Band to Bozeman?

Sorry I haven't weighed in before now. I've been a little busy with the stuff that is going on. I am the director of the Grizzly Marching Band. I'm happy to answer any questions you may have about the situation. Here's some accurate information:
-Kent Haslam spoke to me personally about this cut and while it stinks to lose the funding, I understand why it had to happen this year. When I announced it to the band, I made it very clear that athletics always has been, and continues to be a big supporter of what the band does for Griz game day.
-The actual cost to get us to the game is $17,750.
-The bulk of this cost is The purchase of tickets for all the GMB members.
-We do not stay overnight on this trip. We did at one time but that has not been the case for several years.
-The total above covers tickets, buses, and 2 meals.
-Issues being raised about the Washington family or the Champions Center are just foolishness. There is no connection to this situation.
-So far, donations are going pretty well and it appears that we will be able to make the trip, provided we can get to the 17k goal.
-There is a Gofundme page but the official link will be through the UM Foundation as soon as they have the donation page created.

It is too bad that some people feel compelled to react in anger and with limited information. I have asked the GMB members to remain positive and focus on continuing to provide energy and enthusiasm at the games. We love Grizzly Football and Griz Nation is proving that they will get us to Bozeman to play whatever part we can in this great rivalry. Thank you to any of you who have donated so far. Go Griz!

Thanks for the clarification, and level headedness! The GoFundMe page has been pinned to the front page of this board.

FWIW, here are the stipends paid to GMB members:

$1,000 for 1st year and 2nd year members
$1,250 for 3rd year members
$1,500 for 4th year and above!

Depending on course load, some GMB members have to pay for the one credit course.

Not a lot given the hours they invest.

Are these stipends or scholarships?

The bulk of the cost is the tickets. Both schools charge full price. I think $70 times 125 band members. That's total BS, for both schools. Needs be changed. My view is that the bands should be charging the schools to play for the game, and improve the atmosphere.

This will get done, this year. I told Kevin I would put in $500, and he could come back to me if they were short. I would guess that the athletic dept. will put in some money. They should.

This was was mishandled from a public relations point of view. What is UM thinking? I called this issue to the new president's attention yesterday too.

They are scholarships. Funding for the scholarships comes from several sources, like private donors or UM waivers, but I don't think athletics has to pay for any of the scholarships. If you check online, you will find that these amounts are comparable to the MSU band scholarships. I personally feel that the GMB members earn every penny of their scholarships.

It's actually a little worse than this. Because of our equipment, we take up more room in the stands. The standard ratio for seating a band is 1.5 seats per member. We end up with a higher seating cost in order to have room to play.

The band members do earn every penny of their scholarships. They add a lot to the game day and they seem like a good group of kids.

For those who are interested, here is the link to the UM foundation donation page. There are sone tax advantages over gofundme.

So is the GoFundMe page that has already raised 10k linked on this topic not going toward the trip? Or will it be transferred over?

You know what's more embarrassing for UM than all the rapes, engstrom and home invasion crimes?

Tool football fans worrying about a band.

Thank you UMGMB for the professional response to the situation. It appears Griz Nation is going to find a way to send the band to the game, hope it becomes a reality and this situation doesn't come up again. Keep up the great work! :thumb:

What? The band is awesome. It's part of what makes Griz games so much fun. They help set the atmosphere (They're louder than cheerleaders, that's for damn sure) and if they're struggling, it's a serious problem.

Yes, the starter of the gofundme will donate the money to the foundation for the trip.
