Tackling a Culture of Sexism

If am Lisa Davey's or even possibly the Missoulian, I'm going through the posts on this thread and copying the most moronic of the posts into a one-pager which could be used, in her and her supporter's minds, to validate a culture of sexism surrounding the Griz fan base. One of many examples....

by snap » Wed Feb 14, 2018 1:39 pm

A woman's highest calling is to be a good wife, run a tight household, provide a safe and loving environment for raising children and satisfying her husband sexually. Fact.

Then of course those posting this kind of crap will immediately get their knickers in a twist, wet themselves, get their jaws good and tight and righteously declare that she is a lying, cherry picking toxic feminist. There may be an element of truth in that assessment but she would be cherry picking your comments. Like it or not the EGriz football forum will be associated with the Griz fan base and unfortunately the team and the coach. It seems that there is just an element of the membership here that, far from being masculine, are desperately afraid their spouses or significant others are going to join the "me too" movement (based on what I have read they may have good reason to fear). You seem to feel that having community discourse on the subject is bound to radicalize even more of the community. You conjur up female she-devils in the work place behind every water cooler just waiting to file a harassment suit. Man it must be tough living in your world of fear. If you don't wan't posts such as Snap's coming out in public as representative of the Griz fan base, and therefore illogically the team itself, you might wan't to tone down your sexist remarks. But your choice :?: :?: :?:

I can only speak for myself, but I definitely walk on eggshells a LOT more now. I would never dare to comment on someone's hair or clothes in the workplace. My coworker had long hair for six years, she cut it short, and I said absolutely nothing. I'm sure she'd be fine with a compliment, but it's honestly not worth the risk. Dead serious.

I understand. I do. That's why I was happy to speak up for the pro-Hauck petition as a female fan and supporter. As men, your hands are tied in some cases and it isn't fair. But,it is the extremes on both sides that have caused this. The ones who do their best to say the most irrationally angry, mean things on public forums to try to hurt others (maybe not realizing that their opinion became obsolete long ago) are the reason that all of this shit is stirred up. The ones who DO rape, assault, bully, harass....they are why all of this has to be addressed. Has it gone way too far for good men? Yeah. No doubt. But you can't solely blame the irrational people on one side. The rational 90% need to join Hauck and Brint to work toward a better future in all of this. The nutjobs yell really loud but Everett is correct - most of us are reasonable.

Of course you can acknowledge your coworkers haircut. Of course I can remark on Bodnar's beard. It's silly and unhelpful to for anyone to suggest otherwise.

While not quite the same, Shaun White got sued, as the leader of his band, for, among other things, saying things about hair.

"In the lawsuit, Zawaideh said White repeatedly sexually harassed her, ... told her how to get her hair cut. The lawsuit included screengrabs of text messages allegedly sent by White asking about the haircut ...."

I no longer comment on any female co-worker's hair. I don't ask office women if they want to come to lunch or meet us for a drink, unless it's an office/group event. Just not worth the hassle or risk, in the current atmosphere.

Yeah... there's a little more to that lawsuit than how to cut her hair:

mong the allegations, Zawaideh claims White sent her sexually explicit and graphic images of "engorged and erect penises" and forced her to watch sexually disturbing videos "including videos sexualizing human fecal matter."

One of the videos Zawaideh claims she was forced to watch was a couple killing a bear and then having sex on top of it.

She also claims White forced her to watch "Church of Fudge" -- a hardcore porn "involving a priest, a nun and fecal matter."

At one point, Zawaideh claims White stuck his hands down his pants, approached Zawaideh, and then "stuck his hands in her face trying to make her smell them."

She also claims he tried to kiss her on the mouth at a Halloween party in 2010 -- but she shut him down.

In her suit, filed by attorney Lawrance Bohm, Zawaideh claims White ran the band like a tyrant -- ordering her to cut her hair and wear sexually provocative outfits, despite her protests.

Yes, I posted most of the additional info from the lawsuit earlier in this thread. But nevertheless, the woman used the hair comments as part of her lawsuit. On the sexy dressing point, has it really come to this, i.e. that it is inappropriate for the leader of a band to suggest that a woman in the band dress sexy? Are magazines and photographers not allowed to tell models how to look, dress and pose?

Sure, everything on egriz is fact, is representative of Griz fans, is not intended to be tongue in cheek or a joke, and should be deemed to be endorsed by the coach, AD and players. This also goes for everything on the internet.

IDK if this was directed at my at-work conversation policy, but if it was, it's woefully misdirected. I choose to do what makes me feel the most protected, and you have absolutely no right to question it as long as I'm not hurting anyone (I'm not).

:thumb: I was just going to say almost the exact same thing. The double standard at work here is obvious and laughable.

Out one side of their mouth:
  • "How dare you assume that, based on a few outspoken women, all women are raging feminists seeking to emasculate the male population."
Out the other side of their mouth:
  • "It's fair to assume that all men are pigs because a few of you have strong opinions about women, gender differences, and feminism."

Oooouch! It hit me with that she thing again. It keeps mistaking auto-regurgitations with “thoughts and ideas.” I’m actually a lover of those things … neither of which one will ever find here, nor does one expect to find them here, which is as it should be … stick to pretending you know something about sports instead of pretending you have ideas about other issues. It's pretty simple: Don't be a sleezebag. Don't creep on women you work with. Even better, be friends with the women you work with and treat them with respect. Also helps if you like women...

I get that some people may make illegitimate accusations towards others, but it is typically pretty easy do identify those people and avoid them or avoid hiring them...

One of the videos Zawaideh claims she was forced to watch was a couple killing a bear and then having sex on top of it. I haven't seen this one yet...will definitely check it out when I get a chance. This might come in handy as a how-not-to during both the "Hunting Ethics" and "Meat Care and Field Dressing" sections of hunters safety class this summer.

She also claims White forced her to watch "Church of Fudge" -- a hardcore porn "involving a priest, a nun and fecal matter." I haven't seen this one either. Despite making light of this article I either live in a different world or I am missing important details about this. She was "forced" to watch something on a screen? And kept returning? She had no way to leave the room? Quit the band? Block his number? Find better friends? How come some people don't have control over the situations they continually put themselves into, while others do? If my daughter told me this info about her bandmate, I would suggest they find a better band. Is that way too practical? Too logical?

IDK if this was directed at my at-work conversation policy, but if it was, it's woefully misdirected. I choose to do what makes me feel the most protected, and you have absolutely no right to question it as long as I'm not hurting anyone (I'm not).

CDA, my post was not specifically directed at your posts. There were several in the same general vein. I'm truly sorry that you have come to the conclusion that you have to avoid a certain amount of interaction with females because you perceive the current environment of interaction between males and females at work and at play potentially toxic. Without quoting PR whom I respect, I would also like to address his concerns. I feel sorry for both of you, and others on this forum, that it has come down to this and fear consumes attempts to interact with the opposite sex. But the current environment of accusation is not fixing things. So I support the effort of Bobby Hauck, GGNez and others who would like to get this out in the open so we don't have to have this conversation again. However, like it or not, some of the posts on this thread can be construed by those not familiar with this forum as toxic to Griz football. The posts on E-griz have the potential to go to other places on social media.

I sent the Snap post to my daughter (Biology Degree UM, Davidson Honors College, Summa Cum Laude, multiple scholarships to WSU Veterinary School). Now happily married, good housekeeper, 2 year old daughter, husband a pastor. Did her first neuter as an intern when she was an undergrad junior. She is quite good with a scalpel and wished she could get Snap on the surgical table. I reminded her that while she could cut the scrotum there would be no testicles to be found inside  . Snap's definition of the highest calling for a female is not hers nor her husbands.

While trite, my best advice to all males is to think with your brain and not your penis. That and don't live in fear. It took me many many years to figure out what my wife told me 25 years ago. You can't change things without listening to the other side and even then don't expect immediate results. Your welcome to live your life as you perceive but I think the level of paranoia that some on this forum seem to feel justified is just sad. There is no logical reason to live in fear of females, those with different sexual orientation or different skin color or country of origin unless fear rules your life.

Agree or not but don't be surprised to see some of the comments on this thread to come back and bite you and Griz football in the ass.

Or, in the alternative, tell her to cut her hair and dress sexier. And take the drink, if she wants. And, if she didn't like "porn", to tell they guy to cut that out. I certainly wouldn't suggest that she wait 7 years to make the decision.

Cool. I agree that it's sad, which is why I posted that exact thing a few pages ago. I don't "fear" female coworkers to the point where I won't meet with them without a third party present. In fact, I don't fear them at all. But I 100% keep our conversations about work. I don't think I've ever come off as a creeper in a professional environment, but I personally choose to remove all doubt going forward. If these comments come back to "bite me in the ass" somehow, it certainly won't be because they are distasteful or disrespectful.

These horrible, toxic things have just GOT to stop!!!

Actually the answer to those options is “none of the above” in most all reasonable circumstances
Brint, are you serious?

All of this important dialogue, 22 pages and counting, and it's FINALLY sinking in how ignorant people really are. I'm beginning to understand why so many of you are SO pissed. You really DO believe that putting a stop to sexism is about putting a stop to sexuality and sexual relationships; flirting, connecting, enjoying each other. You're so far off the mark, it's crazy.

I haven't read what you've said; what I have read is that "sexuality and sexual relationships; flirting, connecting, enjoying each other" carries a risk today that may not be woth it.
