Williams: UM has recruited 'thugs' for football team

The REST of williams comments (" he also praises the changes the university has made even as the investigations have continued. University president Engstrom, Williams says, "welcomes and is eager to have the help that is coming from the investigations" and has dealt with episodes of misconduct "quickly, harshly and appropriately.") make it a tiny bit better (not much). The articles seemed to be pretty well done.

I was so God Damn happy to see my beloved Bobcats front and center in Sports Illustrated... and not for good things. But that "Rock Bottom" probably cleared the path for where we are today.

Just so I am clear on the rock bottom and thug thing, is Connor Thomas a thug that was just re-signed, or just a good kid that made a mistake and paid for it?
Was Roger Trammell a thug, or maybe falsely accused? Or maybe he was recruited before you hit rock bottom a decade ago so he doesn't count.
How about Donald Tudahl, thug or self defense?
The 2 from the basketball team kicked off last summer for breaking into cars? Thugs or just boys being boys?

I am just curious why all these fellows got into trouble, but they aren't thugs, or at least your programs don't recruit thugs anymore?

It could well be that they weren't just as well that they were. If the investigations weren't conducted at all or half-assed, then the evidence issue would be a moot point. If you don't even try, of course there won't be evidence.

Pat Williams is a D-bag! He should be ashamed of spouting off a comment like that. He has to know any comment like that to a news paper WILL be printed. To me it shows he has a vendetta against UM, specifically football. His intentions are more to punish and harm than to aid and improve.

Williams wants to sit down with Mick a childhood friend and find ways for UM to recruit quality football players. I call BS on that. Again another person focusing on some bad and totally overlooking anything good done by Griz football players. He makes them all out to be thugs!

Sometimes when your so close to things you just don't see it. I don't think the NCAA and DOJ would still be there if there is nothing wrong. Just my opinion. The facts will come out. The problem with the comment is that it focuses on just the football team. There have been very few instances with the team (I'm talking about the number of players charged with crimes versus the 100 or so football players). If the problem is out of the ordinary and just involved football players then so be it but it is NOT out of the ordinary and does NOT just involve FB. The alleged crimes and DUIs, etc. are all across the student population at UM and all Universities. There is no justice in Williams' comment because he puts the whole issue on the backs of the football team.

Really? Can you give me a number on the crimes swept under the rug with football players versus the rest of the population? That is the comparison you should be making. And are we talking about just the University of Montana or should we also look at MSU and other Big Sky schools? Seems you're missing the point. The point is that the focus should not be so narrowly focused. Maybe we should be looking at the entire Montana college system and see where U of M fits into the picture.

Nope. Don't worry about facts getting in the way of your story. Go ahead and look up the number of MSU FB players arrested over the past 5 years, and what the arrests were for... And compare that to the griz. Then compare it to all other NCAA teams. We are in the top 3% for clean programs. You are near the bottom.

My problem is with the timing. If he is so pleased with what the school has done to right the ship then you don't make comments now, right before the JJ trial, and say the school recruited thugs. It makes it sound like that is all they recruited. Many - many quality kids have passed through Wa/Griz who were great people to go along with football players and students. It is a slap to the face to those young men who did it right.

Difference here is Cat players were kicked off the team. Didn't wait for a court date. BN didn't erupt with excuses. Good bye, don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya. Did Tru commit mutiple crimes? The consensus is yes. But he wasn't charged. Doesn't mean it didn't happen. Swept under the rug. I don't pretend that Cat players are perfect. But so many on egriz like to pretend that if there wasn't a conviction, it didn't happen.
