Who are UM's peers?

You are an outstanding little guard dog. You must really have a low opinion of the UofM's vo-tech branch campus in missoula.

Indeed. The Diesel Tech program is a joke. At least we have the actual University upon which to fall back. Any news on Shoota's grades? Is he a go for launch in Eugene?

Vernon Adams graduated last Saturday. The first in his family to get a degree.

That's awesome! Good for him. Let's hope he brings the same magic to the field in Eugene that he did in Cheney (and Missoula).

Ahhh, according to the Spokesman, he walked at the ceremony but hadn't graduated. He still has, in his words, "a couple math tests to pass".

My mistake. I thought he was done. I certainly hope he gets the degree, regardless of what he does on the football field.

Well, it's not like he murdered somebody.

Math 451 syllabus for the Interdisciplinary Studies Program he's taking.

When you're talking peers among colleges the main factor is academics. Schools get the invites to join conferences primarily on academics and core values. That's why BYU doesn't get asked to join the Big 12 or PAC 12. Within the BSC the way I grouped them is accurate. Our closest peers in the FBS are in the Sun Belt and MWC. Idaho, Nevada, Boise St. Etc

Big Sky peers for us are-
WEber, NAU, SSU, UND, ISU

EWU, PSU, S. Utah, UNCo are peers of each other.

Poly, MSU, Davis, are peers of each other.
I don't mean this in a disparaging way at all, but I look at that list and UND is really the only peer. Because none of the Big Sky institutions outside of UM and UND would compete in the MWC. Assuming football is the peer measuring stick. Based on other measures your assessment may very well be accurate.
Put me in the move-up camp though I really don't think the MWC is an option for UM unless there is another round of major P5 conference realignment that poaches some G5 in the future when the current TV contracts are renegotiated. I would love to see the Griz in the FBS and would really enjoy many of the regional match-ups that would create.

If you're in the move up camp you probably should learn the difference between UND and NDSU. Unless you're talking University of Notre Dame.

I stand corrected. UM has no peers in the BSC. And I apologize for my mistake. It's really hard for me to care about, or pay close attention to, anything from, or affiliated with, the state of North Dakota. And as far as UND (University of Notre Dame) goes...

What a mess we are in. Over 50 years in the Big Sky Conference and now the grads and fans don't know any better. Most think we are in high cotton to the extent that we probably will never change conferences. The majority really do believe our peers are Northern Colorado, portland State and Eastern Washington. I notice the excitement on this board heat up when we are about to play a Big Sky school. Some of us have always thought Fullerton is an idiot, but Mr. Bobcat is really the sly fox.
The more I see how most of you have been duped, the more I think it would be good to start enjoying Big Sky athletics because it ain't going to change.

Realistically the only other peers you have are state universities in states that have no FBS teams.. Even Wyoming has and FBS team. The University of Vermont has a “club” football team. They saw the handwriting on the wall in 1974. Maybe you can work out a Home and Home deal with them. Might be more competitive than Oklahoma Panhandle State was.

Certainly more competitive than Montana Western (EWU) or Ft. Lewis/E.Tenn. St (MSU).

Pretty much true; and Fullerton devotes his efforts to his own job preservation (as in nose up the presidents' A$$es) with little of it benefiting the fanbases or ADs of the BSC members.

This is prcisely the point!!! You're saying the only reason that UM isn't considered a peer with UNM, HI, NMSU, Wyo, CSU, UNM, UNLV,etc is because UM doesn't play FBS football. Those ARE our peers. Certainly Ewoo, UNC, so ut, NAU are not our peers. The teams I mentioned are. We just gotta make the move.

Enrollment is another factor. Enrollment brings in money and adds to the fan base.
Hawaii 60,000
San Diego St. 35,000
San Jose St. 33,000
CSU 32,000
Unlv 30,000
Utah St. 28,000
Fresno St. 23,000
Boise St. 23,000
New Mexico 22,000
Nevada 20,000

We have 13,000, which is closer to New Mexico St. (Sun Belt) 18,000 and Wyoming 12,000. Air Force is really small, but I wouldn't call them a peer for obvious reasons.

In terms of football attendance we're right there, but if we were in the MWC we'd be a lot like Wyoming having .500 seasons and going to the Weed Eater Bowl at 7-5, we're probably gonna lose fans and turn into another Idaho. We also won't be winning recruiting battles as easily.

After the dust settles at Big 5 have sorted themselves out I can see us moving into a conference with Wyoming, NMSU, Idaho etc. type schools. No way do we fit in the MWC.

Enrollment doesn't automatically add money or fans. It might add the POTENTIAL for more $$ and more fans, but the conference attendance figures directly contradict your assertion.

You contradict yourself; Wyoming is in the MWC and is not leaving.
