What is wrong with our announcer?

Maybe someone has the video from the Idaho game in January 1991 that made SportCenter. That was the game when the Iraq anti-war protesters ran out and laid on the floor right before tipoff and the Zoo pelted them with the potato's that they had brought for the Vandals. When the cops dragged the protesters off the floor the whole place started chanting "USA, USA, USA"
In retrospect, with thousands of dead Americans, hundreds of thousands of Iraq citizens dead, billions of dollars Missing, and nothing really gained but a limited share of oil, perhaps those protestors should have been supported by all who really know what patriotism truly is....I remember watching that game in Chicago and hearing people praise UM...as i recall, the Griz lost that game...

From Wikipedia on US casualties in Gulf War. Low hundreds, not thousands. In case anyone cares about accuracy.

"The DoD reports that U.S. forces suffered 148 battle-related deaths (35 to friendly fire), with one pilot listed as MIA (his remains were found and identified in August 2009). A further 145 Americans died in non-combat accidents."

Just referring to the wrong Gulf War....
They are all the same..one leads to another..apparently, people whose legs, arms have been blown off, or now live homeless due to PTSD are not casualties....but when I see them every week, I see casualties...more than one has asked me to "end" things...the oil wars are simply wrong....Now, as to the Griz, I hope they pound MSU in front of a good student crowd...which should be on the sidelines and not under the basket...

Why do I have a rather good feeling, there will be memorable student moment against Weber State this Tuesday? I hope a student, or students have something cooked up tonight, and/or Tuesday.
Nothing better than winning...the rest is just window dressing...It really is too bad the students are not on the sides for games like this....alas...

My favorite pregame memory was an early 1960s Bobcat game. During the warmups, someone turned a bunch of white chickens loose under the Bobcat basket. I think that may have been the game where the students were given short 2X4 blocks to clap together as noise-makers. As I recall, the Cats won the game on a last second shot that bounced up on the top of the backboard and then dropped through the hoop. As the Cats were leaving the court, the top Cat player (from Great Falls, I think) stopped and flipped off the student section - which then pelted him with the chunks of 2X4.

Everytime a ball hit the ground, the chickens would scatter. I don't think we can ever equal that. Tossing spuds on the floor during an Idaha warmup was a lose second.

Strange but true.

Watching the Gonzaga-BYU game the other night it looked like the excitement that once was the Zoo has moved on to the Kennel in Spokane. Those GU students really get into it and they've got all their chants/cheers down perfect. The game drew Brent Musberger doing the PBP and he remarked that it's one of the best student sections he's seen anywhere...The kids also treated Old Brent like a rock star.

BTW, If Fat Dad was indeed a local DJ, I wonder if anybody at his old station knows where he is or has any old air checks of his better stuff. (Not easy. Like most stations they've probably cycled formats and on-air staffs half a hundred times since then . A trace might be tough.

Who was the guy who beat up his girlfriend (think he played for Reno) and when he was announced the zoo dropped the newspapers they had been holding up, revealing fake bruises and bandages on their faces? That's some classic stuff.
About the only thing I've heard an opposing crowd do better was throwing pizza boxes on the floor when Charles Shackleford (NC State) was being introduced. He had a prior charge for beating up a pizza deliver boy and stealing the pizza.

Curtis High

Do you remember the Highschool aged kids on the other side of the arena opposite the ZOO behind the scorers bench who threw the set of BOXING GLOVES out onto the floor when UNR's Curtis High entered the game??

I think I'll keep those two individuals responsible for that great feat anonymous...

Ahh the Lewis & Clark/Sentinel Gang...

Priceless...

Anyone who doesn't enjoy watching the team play this year, just doesn't appreciate good and exciting basketball. If you need an exciting announcer, and a wild student section, to attract you to the games, then I don't see a compelling reason to bother to attend. This team is very good and very exciting to watch. The cheer squad and dancers are also very good. Other entertainment at half time and during some time outs is also usually pretty good.
I agree with you 100 percent! Earlier this year i was asked to do a survay for the night out on the town thing....and all the questions on the survay were meaningless..asking about BS time out entertainment and halftime shows....i dont give a shit! i go there to watch good basketball and that is what i have been getting all season. It would be great if the student section was courtside, but if i can get loud up in the 211, and ray is going off the deep end all game, everybody can do that and we would have the ZOO!

I know a lot of the guys on the team and I go to most of the games. Why are we the only team that has a boring announcer? He doesn't have nicknames for the players, he doesn't raise his voice on great plays or dunks. The guy on the radio sounds way more alive and he looks about twice as old as "Denny Redard". I think the players would get more up if they heard their name mentioned loudly after a good play and the fans would get more excited. I have never heard a boring game announcer before in my life and that includes high school.

Send your comments to O'Day. For as much work as they put into the football games to improve the atmosphere it is just not there for the basketball games. Of course I am biased by being a proud member of the Zoo from 79 to 84.

Speaking of the Zoo I wonder what the actual $ amount it would cost to put the student back where the Zoo used to be????

The day UM decided to move the students and let fat ass Larry Frost and his media buddies have the first two rows... was a nail in the coffin to UM basketball.

It will take time and LEADERSHIP from above to fix the problem.

It was KYLT AM, 1340 on your radio dial (now owned by Cherry Creek Radio). They used to broadcast the Griz games, and Grizzly Bill Schwanke did the play-by-play. Ironically, current arena announcer Denny Bedard started his broadcasting career there, and his radio name was Mark Willis. Peter Christian also got his start there. "Vern Argo," "Lee Curtiss" (Fat Dad) were also DJ's/announcers around that same time, as were "Dave Robbins" and "Charlie Brown" (Doug Smith).

Growing up, my favorite KYLT DJ was J. Parker Antrim. The guy was nuts. If he didn't like a particular Top-40 song, he'd just end it right in the middle and switch to something else. From Missoula, Antrim moved to Lebanon, Oregon (KGAL), and from there "he took his unique act to Columbus, OH and then to San Francisco where he worked at some prestigious stations including legendary KYA."

See some history at:

If you want to hear J. Parker Antrim ("Airchecks" Parts I and II), you can hear him here from his days in Columbus, Ohio:

I wish there were KYLT clips available for other Missoula deejays!

I struck out with the university archives and Dave Guffey but will continue to search for Fat Dad audio.

Fat Dad was a lot more exciting at Griz games than he was as a DJ, so it would be really cool if you could somehow find some live game audio, 8791!

Here's a transcript:

Fat Dad: Michael R-r-r-r-r-ay R-r-rr-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-chardson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Completly and totally agree. If I remember they used the excuse of switching to quarters with the longer winter break with the stupid intersession vs. the semester system with only a 3 week break over the holidays. They said that five / six week break was to long to not have any studends courtside. They just need to get rid of the intersession and start classes two weeks earlier and add a winter break that alot of schools have and put the kids back on the sideline.

haha its epic, cant say ive seen anything like it, EVER

He doesn't ever slow down. Crazy. Wintercession must cease! Dennison tried it but the faculty cried about their warm month break and threatened to strike. Without kids around for a month and a half, they can't have the side section. It would be like a church in the arena and the U would lose a ton of money. Get rid of wintercession and then I agree we should bring the kids back.
