The worst public defender in the office would have won this case.
It's easy to say that, now that we've seen how the case turned out with Paoli and Pabst defending it. The truth is, though, that we'll never know how it would've turned out. Public defenders' offices have some very talented attorneys, but would they have had the time and resources to investigate the case as thoroughly, and to develop their arguments as carefully, as Paoli and Pabst did? Maybe, maybe not. And if the defense had not had the time to do its work as thoroughly as they did, would it have been as clear that JJ should be found not guilty? Maybe, maybe not.

I've had many friends who've worked in public defenders' offices over the years, and they are all good attorneys. But if my kid's freedom was at stake, I'd make the same decision the Johnsons did.

No wonder the NCAA is hanging around. You f'ing idiots.

Here's an idea, you live your life, and let Johnson and his family live their lives.

HannahO...give me a break! Yes, it was a choice. But the choice couldn't have been more clear or required. What reality are you living in? Paoli's team versus a public defender is trying to compare apples to oranges. Even if the public defender is competent, it is still one attorney working for him with limited resources. Pray to heaven that you yourself and Irene never need public defender for a felony charge.

True. If your child faced 10-20 yrs in prison if convicted would you take the cheap route?? Hell no I would spare no expense if my childs future was in jeapardy. I can't imagine using a public defender in this situation. What a stupid idea!

Missed the point entirely (no surprise). I wasn't suggesting that his parents or any others or that I, in a similar situation, wouldn't do the same ... What I was saying is that they had a choice and they made it. It is one most of us with any means would make for their child - but make no mistake, they had a choice. JJ had and made choices. My point was that it is my belief that it is not is something tragic deserving of a discussion regarding fundraising. That I would reserve to parents of kids that are victims of a hit and run or need medical treatment that insurance doesn't cover or have a catastrophic injury on the field.

If I, my son (or Irene, whoever the hell that refer to) ever needs a defense counsel, I don't expect you to feel compelled to rush to my aid! :D

Yes, I would have made that same decision, too.

My point was simply that, since the prosecution did not meet its burden of proof, the case was really over before the defense even called a witness.

And I know hindsight is 20/20, but did you honestly believe after it rested that the prosecution might get a conviction?
