Vim's 2019 Montana High School Football Recruiting List

To answer a question that many may have, the best overall player in the state right now (all ages and class levels) is junior QB Carson Rostad of Hamilton. His development from his sophomore to junior season has been noticeable and he was pretty dang good as a sophomore. At this point, he is without a doubt the #1 player in the 2020 Montana Recruiting Class.

Is Rostad going to get national recruiting attention or is he just more athletic than the other kids he's playing against? I haven't seen Rostad play, but it's hard for me to envision anyone more dominant than Bozeman High Kenneth Eiden. He's the best defensive player on the #1 AA team in the state....as a Sophomore. Any idea what the early opinions are of him? I go to all Bozeman's home games and have seen some pretty good defenders (Will Dissly, Grant Collins, Payton O'Reilly, Balue Chapman, etc..) but Kenneth is the most dominant I believe I've seen.

Rostad is my #1 player based on the film I've seen. Kenneth is up there but he isn't the best player on his team currently. Ryan Lonergan holds that designation.
Anyway, I don't expect Carson to receive FBS attention at QB but wouldn't be surprised if a program offered him a PWO. But he's a FCS talent all the way as a QB. Kenneth is on his way to getting a FBS offer just like Will Dissly. Eiden has marketed himself well as a young player as he has attended FBS camps alongside Luke McEndoo down in Oklahoma so his name will be out there. He's going to be a monster by the time he's a senior as he has already put up AA Defensive MVP production as a sophomore.

Hearing that the Griz got a commitment from CB Trevin Gradney of Billings West. My #2 rated corner in the 2018 MT Recruiting Class. Would be another excellent in-state pickup for Bobby Hauck.

Vim,

Do you think he will play CB in FCS?

Yes. He belongs in the secondary.

Are you thinking safety? 4.84 40 isn't really FCS CB speed

He runs a sub 50 second 400m dash. He is plenty fast and has quick-speed with fluid hip change out of his breaks. Looking at a player's 40 doesn't really mean a whole hell of a lot in terms of playing CB in my opinion. Short-area quickness and being able to run with receivers does matter and his 400m dash time (and game film) proves he can do both.

Senior wide receiver Jesse Owens, who has been offered a scholarship by Montana, scored on three long pass plays -- 61, 67 and 79 yards -- in the second half to help second-ranked Billings West to a 34-28 win over Missoula Sentinel in front of a large crowd at Missoula County Stadium.

Owens finished with 10 catches for 248 yards

Billings Central lineman Marcus Wehr picked up three crucial sacks in last night's come from behind 49-18 win over Lewistown. Looked pretty impressive exploding off the D-line. Don't know if the staff is interested or not, but he may be worth a serious look.

Crishon Dixon looked like his usual self pulling in passes on some key long pass plays. I think he just scored the one time yet he set up at least two other scores.

Also, agree with Payton about Jesse Owens. The kid has real potential to compete in the Big Sky.

Hopefully none of them have this game on or are paying attention. Some of them might just change their minds.

So guys... K Brown doesn’t appear on the list anywhere. Would he be a mid-season addition for either of you?

Top 40 player when the final list comes out. Has been very good his senior season and has great size at 6'4", 220 lbs. I did not expect him to get a FCS offer so congrats to the kid for getting to realize his dream of playing QB at this level.

Brown's hudl film looks like he has some good raw talent to work with. Strong arm with good touch on his throws. Good enough athlete with good size and speed to become a TE if QB doesn't work out. Definitely worth a partial, IMO.

Posted this back on Feb. 7th of this year and not much has really changed. Use it to keep things in perspective...or don't.

From what I initially see, there will be some good wide receivers yet again, at both slot and outside receiver positions. On the lines, I see a few offensive lineman who should get Big Sky looks. I see some RBs that will receive interest but there is not a Drew Turner level kid at RB. There will be a few enticing TE prospects with one specifically already garnering significant interest from both the Cats and Griz. At QB, there will be some solid players and overall the position will be deeper than this past recruiting class...but deeper for NAIA level play. On defense, I see several defensive line prospects who should push for offers from UM/MSU. At linebacker, there will be some outside linebackers getting interest but I don't see any big thumpers at MLB. Not a very deep group compared to the last few years. I do see two decent cornerback prospects (hint: they are from the billings area). Last but not least, this class will feature some excellent safeties with 5-6 good looking players.

Thanks, as always, for the insight and perspective on Montana recruiting! Would you mind sharing who you specifically these players were you referenced in your February post?

You bet! And the kids I list are in no specific order.

From what I initially see, there will be some good wide receivers yet again, at both slot and outside receiver positions:
Slot - Jesse Owens, Ryder Meyer (plays QB), Casey Gunlikson, Easton Page, Jaden MacNeil (plays QB)

Outside - Chrishon Dixon, Anthony Jones, Tanner Trafton, Ryan Simpson, Cooper Waters, Dawson Allen

On the lines, I see a few offensive lineman who should get Big Sky looks:
OL - Holden Sampson, Garrison Poetzl, Conner Paul

I see some RBs that will receive interest but there is not a Drew Turner level kid at RB.
RB - Joe Olson, Blake Counts, Landers Smith, Colten McPhee, Ryan Tirrell, Elias DeWaters

There will be a few enticing TE prospects with one specifically already garnering significant interest from both the Cats and Griz.
TE (specific prospect referenced above) - Ryan Lonergan

TE (enticing prospects) - Logan Kennedy, Noah Ambuehl, Michael Nehring

At QB, there will be some solid players and overall the position will be deeper than this past recruiting class...but deeper for NAIA level play.
QB - Rylan Ortt, Blake Thelen, Mitch Norslien, Max Feight (injured-out for year), Kris Brown

On defense, I see several defensive line prospects who should push for offers from UM/MSU.
DL - Garrison Poetzl, Alaric Greil, Garrett Brown, Marcus Wehr, Brock Field

At linebacker, there will be some outside linebackers getting interest but I don't see any big thumpers at MLB. Not a very deep group compared to the last few years.
LB - Joe Olson, Brody Grebe, Colten McPhee, Ryan Tirrell (plays SS), Landers Smith, Wes Jameson

I do see two decent cornerback prospects (hint: they are from the billings area).
CB - Chrishon Dixon, Trevin Gradney

Last but not least, this class will feature some excellent safeties with 5-6 good looking players.
S - Alex Johnson, Ryder Meyer, Landers Smith (plays LB), Ryan Tirrell, Blaise Meriwether, Tucker Greenwell

Glacier is having an average year but Preston Blaine (5'10" 185)
has scored 4 rushing TD's tonight and has 19 on the year
